With the advent of man-made snow, resort openings really don’t mean that much anymore. But when a resort with no snowmaking (like Mt. Baker) announces that they are going to open Friday, November 18, 2011 with an expected 25-40 inches of new snow, it’s something good.
“It’s snowing and blowing and it’s a blizzard, so we’ll take it,” said Gwyn Howat, the ski area’s operations manager, of conditions on the mountain late Wednesday afternoon. “(We’re) looking forward to a powder-filled season with La Niña on our heels here.”
Need a better reason to head north this weekend? Probably not.
Action headphone maker Skullcandy is reportedly suing a company called Skelanimals because their logo is similar to the publicly traded companies skull face, according to a story in the Salt Lake City Tribune.
“The skull logos used by defendants … is likely to cause confusion … or to deceive the consuming public,” according to the trademark-infringement suit filed in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City. . . “We have registered trademarks on that skull across the world, particularly in the headphone category. We are recognized globally for that skull,” said Tom Burton, associate general counsel for Skullcandy. “We try to resolve these issues through friendly negotiations but not everyone respects our intellectual property, and we have to protect it.”
Skelanimals says their design were copyrighted in 2008. Okay, so the eyes, nose and teeth, maybe?
Kevin Pierce isn’t the only snowboarder to suffer a traumatic brain injury. Danny Toumarkine was riding with friends in Montana on January 3, 2011 when a “routine” jump changed his life. Moving Forward is the story of Danny’s accident and his recovery. If this teaser is any indication the film will have you inspired and rocking a helmet this season.
Burton Snowboards is oddly proud to announce that they are partnering with a caffeinated carbonated high fructose corn syrup manufacturer on new outerwear and apparel made from recycled plastic bottles.
The first round of products from this partnership was released today and features a hand-crafted line of t-shirts made from 50% recycled plastic bottles and 50% organic cotton. Part of Burton’s Green Mountain Project, which is a line of products created with an eco-influence, the limited edition Burton x [caffeinated high fructose corn syrup] tees include three styles, ‘Apparatus’, ‘Flake’, and ‘Chairway to Heaven’. Inspired by a Rube Goldberg drawing, the ‘Apparatus’ style features a drawing of an imaginary machine that is converting plastic bottles into recycled PET pellets, which are ‘snowing’ down into the shape of Burton’s classic mountain logo.
While making cool clothing out of trash is an amazing concept, it would be better if Burton simply dumped the drink down the drain (saving a few kids from obesity) before they use the bottles to make their “eco-friendly” clothing. Follow the jump for the official details. [click to continue…]
Thanks to everyone who has had a hand in such amazing projects as Go Skateboarding Day to creating the Skateboarding Summit. IASC is in great hands with Josh [Friedberg] and while the decision to leave was a difficult one, I can only hope that my nearly 6 years of service has helped pave the way for him to work toward a new and improved trade association for skateboarding.

Apparently, “Victor de le Rue, Janne Lipsanen, Elias Elhardt, Victor Daviet, Nils Arvidsson and company have sharpened their edges for some mass destruction” in the streets. To us it’s just a little more Rip Curl snowboarding to get everyone in the mood. And we can all use some of that.
On Saturday vandals “hose” painted “GO HOME” across the entire storefront, getting paint all over the newly conditioned brick, metal and glass.
The store had only been officially open for 24 hours. It would appear that some of the locals aren’t exactly down with the publicly traded surf clothing company putting a store in their neighborhood.
