Gerard Butler Gets Maverick’s Hold-down

by The Editors on December 20, 2011

As Surf Butler Ski 576An Sunday, December 18, 2011, while filming at Maverick’s for a movie on the life of big wave surfer Jay Moriarity, actor Gerard Butler (who plays Rick “Frosty” Hesson in the film) got tumbled through a two-wave hold down and took “five more on the head before being washed through the rocks on the inside,” according to a Frank Quirarte story on ESPN/Action.

Talking to Wormhoudt on the dock, he said they were all sitting on the inside when a large outside set came through, swung way to the south, caught them off-guard and mowed them all down.

Butler was taken to Stanford Medical Center for observation, but was on his feet on the dock before getting into the ambulance. Assuming he’s fine, it was probably great research for his role.

Givenchy On A Surf Safari

by The Editors on December 19, 2011

Memo-Givenchy-E1324299471848

Her royal hotness Gisele Bundchen is staring in a new series of ads for designer label Givenchy. In the ads, she and two pouty bros appear rather miffed to be stuck on a stormy beach with surfboards, but no boardshorts nor bikinis. Here are the details from Fashionista.

Like the Versace ads, these were also shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, and they show off Riccardo Tisci’s goth asesthetic perfectly. The beach, usually a sunny and joyful place, gets dark and stormy in Tisci’s hands.

If Gisele wants to surf, guess she’s going to have to paddle out in her undress.

by The Editors on December 19, 2011

Redbull MediahouseThanks to a new deal between NBC Sports Group’s Alli and Red Bull Media House we’re all one step closer to our sponsored, logo’d, caffeinated Idiocracy future. The partnership will launch a series of advertainment on NBC’s new 24-hour sports network.

The Red Bull Signature Series will include the most progressive and innovative snowboarding, mountain biking, freestyle motocross, ice cross downhill, skiing and BMX events, showcased on custom courses from the inspiration of the athletes themselves. The series features some of Red Bull’s top events including X-Fighters, Supernatural, Crashed Ice, Dream Line, Rampage and Cold Rush and other third party action sports competitions (see below for details on shows). The Red Bull Signature Series kicks off on NBC with Crashed Ice on Saturday, January 21.

Just more sad proof that the future of mainstream action sports content is advertising. Luckily, this will all be on cable where no one will see it. Follow the jump for the official info. [click to continue…]

Rob Dyrdek Kickflips His Car

by The Editors on December 19, 2011

As we mentioned before, this is a stunt straight out of the 1970s, but that didn’t stop Rob Dyrdek from pulling it off. The greatest freeze frame of the video is halfway through the flip when Rob is upside down and eyes tightly shut. Second to that is the look of sheer surprise that he made it and is still alive.

Dyrdek is an A-1 huckster, though we’re not exactly sure this will be a viral video hit. Note to Rob: next time just crash. It’s better for page views. [click to continue…]

Dirksen Derby Dazzles Days

by The Editors on December 19, 2011

Img 2644-640X426This weekend (December 16-18, 2011) while snowboarding’s top sponsored sign spinners were busy getting on-cameras time at the Carbonated, Caffeinated, High Fructose Corn Syrup Tour in Breckenridge, Colorado, the hardcore faithful (including Terje Haakonsen, right) were at Central Oregon’s Mt. Bachelor for the fifth annual Dirksen Derby banked Slalom. More than 300 snowboarders gathered to race with friends and raise money for snowboarder Tyler Eklund.

Pipeline surfing legend Gerry Lopez was even able to make it home from Hawaii in time to win the “older and wiser” division. The Dirken Derby is everything that is good and right about snowboarding and competition. We’re bummed we missed another one, but Yobeat was there and they have all the photos and coverage. Billabong Stock Sacked 44% By Santa

by The Editors on December 18, 2011

Billabong Logo-1On November 25, 2011, when we linked a story saying that Billabong’s stock had “mysteriously” dropped 12.5 percent in one of the busiest days of Billabong stock trading all fall, one of our commenters speculated the following: “Insider trading. Someone’s gotta know something.”

Oddly, today, December 19, 2011 saw Billabong stock fall 44 percent (to a record low) after the company reported that “sales growth had ‘deteriorated significantly'” in the pre Christmas months “as fears of global recession undermined consumer confidence,” according to a story in The Australian.

Billabong has forecast earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization of between $70 million and $75m for the first half of the financial year, down from $94.6m in the previous comparable period. . . The company also said the “poor macroeconomic and trading environment” meant it was unable to provide any forecast for the rest of the financial year, but noted “strong underlying EBITDA growth compared to the previous comparable period in constant currency terms for the full year is not expected”.

Those people who got out three weeks ago must simply be blessed with perfect timing. Unfortunately, founder Gordon Merchant, Billabong’s largest shareholder, was not one of them. His fortune took a reported $78 million fall today, at least on paper. For more Billabong’s current financial situation check out the Wall Street Journal.
