Windansea Local Dies Surfing Home Break

by The Editors on January 4, 2012

Ted1Longtime La Jolla, California surfer Ted Kenneth Smith, 52, died of an “apparent heart attack” Saturday afternoon December 31, 2011 while surfing his home break of Windansea, according to a story in the La Jolla Light. Smith’s lifelong friend and surf companion said this:

“The way he went out with a lot of love, doing it right there at WindanSea. … I don’t think you could write a better script. … If you have to go, have it happen real quick like that. Knowing he’s a spirit right now, I think that’s an Aloha gladiator.”

A Hydrodynamica post added:

He was one of the kindest and most soulful people I’ve ever known. . . he surfed with style, grace, and power.

A Windansea paddle out for Smith is scheduled for January 15, 2012 at 1 PM.

New South Wales Surfer Hit By Shark

by The Editors on January 4, 2012

Nsw SharkA 28-year-old Australian surfer was hit by a shark while surfing Tuesday evening (January 3, 2012) at NSW’s North Avoca Beach, according to a story in the Sydney Morning Herald.

Paramedics said the man felt his arm being pulled under his surfboard. . . The man was treated for puncture wounds to his forearm and wrist, and was taken to Gosford Hospital about 9pm yesterday. . . A hospital spokesman said the man was in a satisfactory condition, and doctors would assess his condition today.

According to witnesses, “The shark got on his board and just took a chunk out of his arm. I saw there was blood all over the man’s surfboard. We could see the bone and the arteries so it was really quite deep.” Authorities believe the shark may have been a bronze whaler. Other reports suggest great whites have been patrolling the area as well.

Tony Hawk On Last Man Standing

by The Editors on January 4, 2012

Thawk Tv

We don’t understand the current state of prime time television. Seems it’s all either grisly murder investigations or bad talent shows. Last night, however, Tony Hawk dropped into TV as himself on Tim Allen‘s Cabelas like sitcom Last Man Standing.

In this episode a Dingoesque bass fishing pro stirs up trouble for Allen. Then Tony Hawk rolls in and suggests the outdoor store move “all the hunting crap” to put in an indoor skate park. The show is not entirely unfunny, and Tony didn’t ruin it. Click the link to watch the entire episode. Tony appears as a punchline in the last four minutes.

Travis Rice’s Helicopter Office

by The Editors on January 3, 2012

In a clip that not surprisingly kicks off with a dreamy, drippingly pornographic shot of a helicopter lifting off and features extended moist rolling landscapes shot from a glittering helicopter, Quiksilver drops into “the office” with helicopter fan Travis Rice. He has very little to say other than to mention this about style:

Style is a tough thing to describe. It would be an easy thing try to do or pursue. It’s a lot more than a trick or a turn or a poke. So much of my style has everything to do with what goes on prior to that moment.

Huh? Helicopter! Helicopter! Helicopter!

Mike Mo, Nyjah Huston On DC Shoes

by The Editors on January 3, 2012

The message boards have been packed with this news for months, but yesterday (January 2, 2012) DC Shoes officially announced that they had made two “massive additions” to their skate program with Mike Mo Capaldi (formerly of Lakai) and Nyjah Huston (footwear free agent).

As usual, this announcement was followed by a flurry of comments from industry insiders and skate kids who don’t believe the publicly traded Quiksilver has skateboarding’s best interest in mind when it signs up major players.

One long-time skate industry head said:

Again skateboarders have sold themselves to a corporate giant who doesn’t care about skateboarding, just money. Happy 4 the skaters, though.

Another fired back:

. . . as long as that company funds skateparks, pays skaters well, makes cool videos and puts on cool events I’m backin’ it.

The first replied:

I know. Getting harder to hate buying credibility. I know it’s not rational but stills feel weird. Happy for skaters though.

Before getting all emotionally involved just remember: skateboarding and skateboarders are just the little donkeys who help drag the footwear marketing machine to the masses.

Follow the jump for the official word from DC.
