Today O’Neill announced that it awarded one of its two 2012 Cold Water Classic wildcard spots to Jason “Ratboy” Collins. Did anyone doubt that?
“I’m super excited to get the wildcard. I knew there were a few people up for it,” said Collins. “It’s pretty cool for a local to get the opportunity to go out and surf against talent like Slater and Parko, guys you’ve looked up to. It’s also cool to see the event get upgraded, like it used to be. We used to get guys like Martin Potter, Tom Curren, everybody would come up here. But it’s been quite a few years.”
The other wildcard will be awarded in a 12-man invitation surf contest on October 31, 2012 featuring Nat Young, Bud Freitas, Noi Kaulukukui, Adam Replogle, Josh Mulcoy, Randy Bonds, Shaun Burns, Josh Loya and Jimmy Herrick, as well as, Johny Craft, Cory Lopez and Tim Reyes. The 2012 O’Neill Coldwater Classic waiting period begins November 1, 2012. Follow the jump for all the details. [click to continue…]
We haven’t seen the movie yet but already the reviews are coming in for Chasing Mavericks, and not surprising, they’re not good. Here’s a piece of one from The Wrap.
[Chasing Mavericks is] a biopic that features not enough stirringly gorgeous surfing footage and way too many clunky biopic clichés in telling the story of surf legend Jay Moriarity. With a storyline as by-the-numbers as a square dance, the movie’s one surprise comes with the closing credits — namely, that this trite “inspirational” movie is the product of two world-class filmmakers, Curtis Hanson and Michael Apted.
“Chasing Mavericks” breaks through the cliches associated with surfer movies – the carefree beach party fantasies, the fake mysticism – and offers a portrait that has a lot more integrity. In this telling, the really serious surfers, the big wave guys, are anything but happy-go-lucky airheads.
Plus, Abigail Spencer is in it, according to the NY Daily News. So we still might have a hard time waiting for the iTunes version.
All this was obviously too much for the mind behind The Tackled Box because he let loose one of the best snowboard rants we’ve read in years. It starts out like this:
Are you kidding me? All the hoopla over saving Forum? GIVE it back to Peter? Really? Shit if there was this much excitement over the brand during the last few years the brand wouldn’t have been put to rest. You want to know why Burton cut the cord on Forum? Cause not too many people gave too many shits about it, that’s why. Forum is a brand that failed and by the grace of the snowboard Gods in Vermont got a second chance at life and then failed again.
That’s only the first paragraph. For the rest of the hilarious, biting, unauthorized history of the Forum brand as only a competitor can put it down, click the link.
Whenever we see the Brothers Marshall gear an old Surf Punks song begins bouncing through our brains. Wonder why that is? Click the link for the rest of the Brothers fall 2012 goodness.

Barilotti has reach is original Kickstarter goal of $20,000 but there are three days left so you can still help him out with getting this project completed. Click the link for more info.
From the marks on his surfboard shark experts are saying that Francisco Javier Solorio Jr., 39, the surfer who died October 23, 2012, was hit by a 15-16 foot great white shark, according to a story in the LA Times.
Ralph S. Collier, a shark expert from the Shark Research Committee of Chatsworth, made the determination about the shark Wednesday after examining Solorio’s body and the board he was using when the shark attacked, according to a statement from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office. . . Collier said he estimated the size of the shark based on the distance between teeth marks on the board.
Amer Sport the Helsinki, Finland based parent company of Salomon, Bonfire, and Nikita reported their financials for the quarter ending September 2012. Profits appeared flat versus 2011 with net sales increased by two percent, and unfortunately winter hardgoods sales were down by 12 percent, according to Marketwatch.
“Our Q3 sales were driven by strong on-going momentum in Apparel (27% growth), as well as continuous improvement in Suunto (+24%), Fitness (10%), Tennis (+8%) and Cycling (+7%),” said Keikki Takala, president and CEO of Amer Sport. “As expected, Winter Sports Equipment declined in line with the previously communicated low pre-orders, despite our strengthened market position.”
Guess their trouble in winter sports equipment is old news. For the official word and all the numbers click the link.
