The Junior Seau Amphitheater at the Oceanside Pier in California was packed Saturday morning, November 10, 2012 as the surf world gathered to remember legendary surfer and surfboard shaper Donald Takayama.
Under sunny skies and buffeted by a strong north wind, music was played, surf legends talked story, and people shared their stories. Members of the Takayama family spoke, two-time ASP World Longboard Champion and Hawaiian Pro Designs team rider Joel Tudor spoke, but it was two-time world surfing champion Nat Young (right) who wrapped things up.
“Donald Takayama was welcome always every where around the world because all he did was just give,” said Young, becoming emotional. “And I tell you, over the years I’ve head a lot of people talk about aloha spirit. And not a lot of people live by that code, but Donald was it. You know. And he’s always treated everybody the same because he had respect for everybody. And he believed that surfers were like a true brotherhood and we talked about this many times, you know. I just hope that infectious DT character and his whole spirit filters down to the young ones who carry on this activity.”
After a short break close to 200 surfers paddled out to give Takayama the classic surfer’s send off. Follow the jump for more photos from the day. [click to continue…]

Mammoth Mountain opened at 8:30 AM yesterday with a bit of snow, freezing temps, lots of dirt and high wind. But none of that slowed the hard core. No. They were out and charging. Yobeat was there to document.
When you get back out on snow this season, remember: Snowboarding is not as easy as the pros make it look (most of the times). Thanks to Arthur Longo, Gigi Rüf and the entire Pirate Movie Production crew for the reminder.
With the serious cold snap hitting the West Coast of the US this weekend Southern California’s Mountain High has decided to turn on the snow guns and begin making snow on Friday, November 9, 2012. With the guns running full speed they hope to open by Sunday morning, November 11.
“We are excited to get this season underway,” says Mountain High CMO John McColly. “With more than $1 Million in improvements and the possibility of another El Nino, this is going to be a terrific winter.”
If the mountain is open on Veterans Day (Monday, November 12) the resort will stick to their “active military rides free on Veterans Day” promise. Follow the jump for all the details. [click to continue…]
Burton Snowboards is taking Ethan Deiss, Zak Hale, Mark Sollors, Niels Schack, Ludwig Lejkner, Dylan Alito, Jamie Nicholls, Wojtek Pawlusiak, Brandon Hobush, Takahiro Ishida and a few others down to Tokyo, Japan’s Roppongi Hills Arena on November 17, 2012 for what they are calling the “largest outdoor snowboard event in the city’s history.”
The contest starts at 5:00 pm and will feature many of the best rail snowboarders in the world competing on a completely redesigned course built by leading snow park and half pipe designers, Snow Park Technologies. The all-new course design brings the rustic atmosphere of the mountains to the packed streets of Tokyo with features like a hitching-post jib log, a picnic table gap jump and a handrail to log bonk. Measuring nine meters tall and 31 meters long, the massive wooden course will be covered in over 90 cubic meters of snow brought to central Tokyo specifically for this event.
The entire event will be on the web live at Burton.com on November 17, 2012 beginning at 11:30 PM PST (8:30 AM in Europe). Follow the jump for the official details. [click to continue…]
Remember the hoopla when Nyjah Huston won the 2012 Street League Championshipback in August 2012? That thing about the truck not the trophy being backwards? Well, apparently representatives of Street League fixed all that and went to Laguna Beach, California and presented Nyjah with his 2012 Championships Nixon Watch, Ring, and a remodeled trophy. And it all looks right proper. Bling Bling.
