Joel Parko Gets Schooled For Surfaid

by The Editors on May 3, 2013

ASP World Champ Joel Parkinson is hitting up school kids with the Surfaid message as the organizations newest schools program ambassador.

Parkinson, 32, addressed an assembly of enthralled students [at Sydney’s Barrenjoey High] before joining a classroom group for a SurfAid lesson on geography. ‘Parko’ was the first at his table to find Bali on the map. “I used to love geography – it was my favorite subject,” he said. . . Parkinson said he was stoked when SurfAid asked him to be an ambassador. “It’s a huge honor, especially for something that does so much good. It was a no-brainer for me to jump on board. I want to raise awareness around the world as much as I can and show the world what SurfAid do.”

Supra + G-Shock = It’s About Time

by The Editors on May 2, 2013

Supra Footwear has teamed up with G-Shock for a celebration of the Japanese watch makers 30th Anniversary (has it been that long?) with a G-Shock inspired Vaider Lite high top.

The black Vaider high top is not only elegant enough to stroll down any red carpet, but it also features two SUPRA footwear technologies: the black Satin TUF upper employs SUPRATUF abrasion resistance technology, and the sole is made from lightweight SUPRAFOAM which provides comfort and impact protection. The all black Vaider has red traction pods, custom red G-Shock sock liner, and the tongue features the “It’s About Time” clock set to 8:13 (20:13 in military time).

The Supra “It’s About TIme” watch will be in G-Shock stores on May 11, 2013 the same day the shoe will be in Supra retailers. Wait, so if we want both we have to go to two stores? Seriously? For the official word follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Tomson, who was driving the Mercedes, was heading south on Glenneyre when he rear-ended the Nissan being driven by a 65-year-old woman from Santa Ana, police said. . . Active Interest Media Buys Ski & Skiing Magazines

by The Editors on April 30, 2013

Ski Magazine TallActive Interest Media, run by former Times Mirror CFO Efrem Zimbalist III, Time4 Media SVP Andy Clurman and former DC Shoes and Transworld Media CEO Brian Sellstrom, announced today that they have purchased Ski Magazine, Skiing Magazine, and Warren Miller Entertainment from Transworld parent company Bonnier Corp. for an undisclosed amount according to a story in AdAge.com.

The magazines’ print business has diminished since Bonnier bought them from Time Inc. in 2007 as part of a $225 million deal for 18 enthusiast magazines. . . Ad pages fell 33.7% at Ski magazine last year, a steeper drop than the 8.2% decline across magazines as a whole, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. . . The deal, terms of which were not disclosed, also includes the rest of the company’s Mountain Group in Boulder, Colo.; . . . and Nastar, a recreational ski and snowboard racing program.

As one action media professional told old us on hearing the news: “Publishers have been using the “buy high sell low” method for the last dozen or so years.” And we’re guessing that trend is going to continue. It is odd, however, that Bonnier didn’t throw Transworld Media in with the purchase, but they probably believe they can milk a few more years of revenue out of the action sports industry before they need to dump it.

[Editors’ Note: We assumed everyone would know, but the previously unwritten irony here is that Times Mirror used to own both magazines and Clurman and Sellstrom used to run them. So yeah, they’re runnin’ their tread mill after you, their runnin’ their tread mill now.]
