Tim Windell Finds A Summer Camp Exit

We-Are-CampMt. Hood summer camp consolidation is well underway as Windells Camp and High Cascade Snowboard Camp join forces as We Are Camp, LLC. After shaping the world of snow summer camps and creating one of the most popular youth sports training brands in the world, former pro snowboarder Tim Windell appears to be taking a break.

“Combining the two camps has been a dream of mine since 2003,“ said Tim Windell, legendary world-champion snowboarder and Windells Camp founder. Windell will serve on the board in an advisory capacity to the company during the transition. Together, the brands offer an unrivaled summer snowboard and ski camp experience with three private terrain parks, Oregon’s best indoor and outdoor skate parks, two high-speed quad chairlifts, four surface tows, four BagJumps, two mini-pipes, and North America’s only Olympic-sized 22’ Summer Superpipe, which serves as the summertime Olympic training facility to the U.S. Snowboarding team and all major contending countries.

Drug Aware Margaret River Round 1

The ASP fired up their jets again in Australia for the first day of the Drug Aware Pro Margaret River. Wildcard Yadin Nicol, knocked Kelly Slater into Round 2 in their Round 1 match-up, but the question on everyone’s lips was: what was Mr. Slater wearing? The answer: a contest jersey, a wetsuit with no logos, and a Jake Burton Channel Islands sticker on his surfboard. Yadin, was happy with his performance against the Quik-free Slater.

“It felt great to beat Kelly Slater,” said Yadin Nicol. “I wish I could have done that last year or the year before. I felt comfortable out there. I usually don’t start out that well so I’m happy to have one under my belt. There wasn’t much going on in that Heat so Slater and Durbidge didn’t have much of a chance to fight back, so I was lucky in that sense.”

Kelly Slater Changes His Shorts

Kelly Slater has left Quiksilver and few are surprised. The most surprising thing to us (aside from the April 1, 2014 roll out) is that news went out in a press release from the ASP. Why is Kelly Slater leaving Quiksilver an ASP news item? Oh yeah, that’s because Kelly owns has extremely close ties to the owners of the Association of Surfing Professionals.

Mr. Slater, however, was a true professional with his exit letter:

There is little I can say that would give the credit due or cover the debt of gratitude I feel on a personal and professional level to Quiksilver. As a brand and on a human level, they have been a part of my life, career, and personal relationships for more than 23 years now, well over half my life. They’ve supported me through good times and bad, personal hardships and competitive triumphs, and never wavered in backing my choices and desires in all that time.

Quiksilver founder Bob McKnight was equally professional and warm.

“Kelly has been a part of the Quiksilver family for over 20 years. It’s been an incredible journey watching him grow from a young surfer with great potential, to the 11-time World Champion he is today. We wish Kelly all the best as he enters this next phase of his career.”

Yes, it went on for a long time (23 years) and they created some iconic images together, but it was just a clothing sponsorship, and Kelly was just a model, and Quiksilver is just a giant clothing company dead set on selling swimsuits to the mall moving masses so we’re sure they’ll find cheaper, younger, more handsome men to model their products in the future. And Kelly, well, he’s moving on up to model for a huge French Fashion conglomerate (that owns Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Puma, and Volcom/electric]. Because if you’re going to model, it might as well be for the French. They invented it.

[Side note: we searched Kering’s site for “Kelly Slater” and the site replied: “Did you mean ‘helly later’?” Yes, that’s exactly what we meant.]

RIP: Surf & Sailing Innovator Hobie Alter

Hobie-SEverson-5Hobie Alter, the man most responsible for the modern age of both surfing and sailing, died yesterday (Saturday, March 29, 2014). He was 80 years old. According to a story on SurferMagazine.com:

A true waterman, Alter competed successfully in the Makaha International Surf Contest in 1958 and ’59, won a trio of tandem surfing championships from 1961-’63, and was elected to both the Huntington Beach Surfing Walk of Fame (1997) and the National Sailing Hall of Fame (2011). But Alter’s legacy will always be that of a pioneer of surfboard and sailboat production, called “the Henry Ford of the surfboard industry” by Steve Pezman, for his contribution to the large-scale manufacture of surfboards.

We had the honor of interviewing Alter for a surf magazine nearly a decade ago. It was a phone interview and he was sitting on the front porch of his home in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. We hit him with questions he’d been asked thousands of time before. But he didn’t seem to mind. At one point, we heard him say,” Whoa.” And we asked, “What just happened? You okay?” He laughed, “A Bald Eagle just got a big one.” We knew then, that Alter was living right. Our thoughts are with Alter’s family and friends.

Surfing Magazine 2014 Swimsuit Issue

Whenever we see the words “swimsuit issue” we always think of that old issue of Transworld Skateboarding Magazine that was teased as a “Special Swimsuit Issue.” Remember? This issue of Surfing Magazine is not that. This is a bunch of bikinis on skinny girls. Hot girls are so hot right now. Especially when they’re lounging around in the sun, glistening with sweat, and nearly naked. Because, you know, they’re just waiting to make all your dreams come true. They’re open, willing, and available right there in the pages. Creep out, kids. . .

Winter Rages On At Mammoth Mountain

Today’s storm at Mammoth Mountain (March 26, 2014) dropped 8 -10 inches of fresh pow and kept Sierra shreds blazing in mid-winter glory. And you know what else? Mammoth is staying open until Memorial Day (May 26, 2014) like they have every and every year for the past 27 years.

“Although winter got off to a slow start, the past month brought a series of strong storms with nearly 100 inches of snow, and more in the forecast this week,” said Mammoth Mountain CEO Rusty Gregory. “With excellent conditions typical of this time of year, we look to continue our long-standing tradition of skiing and riding well into May.” . . To celebrate, Mammoth has a jam-packed spring event calendar with all-ages activities on and off the hill. Events such as the JLA Banked Slalom, Mammoth Invitational, Grenade Games 10, Pond Skim and the annual Easter celebration are back in addition to new offerings like Spyder’s massive “Where’s the Party?” concert at Canyon Lodge.
