The IASC today announced that VanyerMedia’s Gary Vanyerchuk will be presenting the keynote address at the 2014 IASC Skateboarding Summit May 14-16, 2014 at the Westin South Coast Plaza Hotel in beautiful downtown Costa Mesa, California.

Today’s storm at Mammoth Mountain (March 26, 2014) dropped 8 -10 inches of fresh pow and kept Sierra shreds blazing in mid-winter glory. And you know what else? Mammoth is staying open until Memorial Day (May 26, 2014) like they have every and every year for the past 27 years.
“Although winter got off to a slow start, the past month brought a series of strong storms with nearly 100 inches of snow, and more in the forecast this week,” said Mammoth Mountain CEO Rusty Gregory. “With excellent conditions typical of this time of year, we look to continue our long-standing tradition of skiing and riding well into May.” . . To celebrate, Mammoth has a jam-packed spring event calendar with all-ages activities on and off the hill. Events such as the JLA Banked Slalom, Mammoth Invitational, Grenade Games 10, Pond Skim and the annual Easter celebration are back in addition to new offerings like Spyder’s massive “Where’s the Party?” concert at Canyon Lodge.

Skateboarding legend Danny Way will apparently be following DC Shoe co co-founder Ken Block’s automobile racing tracks this week as Way drops in on rallycross racing in “a Suzuki Swift at the first round of the British Rallycross Championship at Lydden Hill,” according to a story on The Checkered Flag.
Way, X Games Gold Medalist for both Big Air and MegaRail and Multiple World Record Holder. . . His new target is to to challenge himself further in the direction of rallycross. With his ultimate goal being the FIA World Rallycross Championship.
What is a Suzuki Swift anyway? It has been said that cars are the biggest reason kids give up skateboarding after they turn 16. Guess some kids just get a later start than others. We have no doubt that Way will be winning races in no time. The dude is gifted.

We don’t know the guy. Never met him, but we’ve always been huge fans of Mark Paul Deren’s art. And we’re always wondering how and why he was able to do all that’s he’s done over the past decade. Now, thanks to an interview with The Hundreds, we have a little look into who Madsteez is and what moves him to create his amazing, comic, insightful, loud, stunning pieces.
If you call getting a D in Art 101 at Cal State Long Beach going to art school then I was definitely classically trained. Before that, I took high school art class but it was only to get an easy A. It actually wasn’t until I started making art for absolutely no purpose at all. From there everything just naturally happened. I got to choose what I wanted to paint and how I wanted to do it. The more I’ve personally grow as an artist, the more I’ve tried to strip my process and simplify my pieces.

Ah, Brooklyn. Home of hip people making cool things with their very own hands (and lasers, apparently). A company called Magnetic Kitchen has begun using their laser to cut designs into skateboard decks and now, through the magic of crowd sourcing they’re trying to raise money (a.k.a. sell more decks) to help them make more.
While we’re not into many of the designs they’re producing right now, the upside is that they could cut anything you want into the decks. Then after a couple board slides it will all be ruined. Maybe these would work better as wall hangers. If you’d like to help, click the link and promise them some money.

A 29-year-old snowboarder died Sunday March 23, 2014 after falling headfirst into a tree well while riding in the backcountry near Pemberton, British Columbia, according to a story in the Vancouver Sun.
The day began when the friends snowmobiled into a popular backcountry area near Pemberton, not far from the Miller’s Ridge Forest Service Road, said Sgt. Peter Thiessen, an RCMP spokesman. . . Partway through the day, one of the snowboarders paused on a run and noticed his friend was no longer behind him. When the friend failed to turn up shortly after, the boarder hiked back up the mountain through the deep snow to look for him, said Thiessen. . . He soon found his friend face down in a tree well. When he yanked the man out of the snow, he found him unresponsive, blue, and not breathing. . . Despite attempts to revive the man with CPR, he did not recover.
Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends.
