Sunset came alive today and so did Dusty Payne as he edged ASP world title contender Gabriel Medina in the Round of 64 at the Vans World Cup of Surfing.
Payne, 26, was electric, opening the 30-minute heat with an outrageous under-the-lip late airdrop, followed by a string of high speed, carving turns. His wave selection was flawless and proved to be the distinguishing factor between him and Medina; Medina’s waves being substantially smaller and thereby limiting his scoring potential. Medina’s final scoreline was 12.17, for a 6.5 and a 5.67, compared with Payne’s 8.17 and 8.0. . . “It’s always nice to compete with the top dogs,” said Payne. “Beating Gabe doesn’t really mean anything except I get to cruise to the next round. It doesn’t really mean much. I was just looking to go and try to get two fun waves. I’m just having fun and the waves keep coming, and I just keep smiling. It’s fun!”

If you’re on the North Shore tomorrow (December 4, 2014) head over to Waimea at 3 PM for the opening ceremony of the 30th Annual Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau. There you will experience the bone crushing weight of Hawaiian surfing, spirit, and soul. Standing near the circle of big wave warriors as they receive a blessing from the Aikau family has a way of communicating the royal reverence Hawaii has for surfing in a way that is rarely (if ever) equalled.
The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau was last held on December 9, 2009, and was won by California’s Greg Long. Long-range surf forecasts are currently eyeing the development of a potential “Eddie”-sized swell that could also arrive around December 9. The event has only been held a total of 8 times.

We’ve never been all that hyped on getting socks for Christmas, but that was before we slipped into these Stance Wittlake five-toe compression socks. After her loss in the quarter finals of the Target Maui Pro all five-time ASP women’s world champion Stefanie Gilmore could do was wait and see what happened to title contenders Sally Fitzgibbons and Tyler Wright. Fitzgibbons was knocked out by Bianca Buitendag in the very next heat, leaving Gilmore waiting until the final between Carissa Moore and Tyler Wright was decided before knowing if she could celebrate or start planning for next year.
“That was probably the most emotional I’ve ever been watching someone else surf in my life,” Gilmore said. “I know how focused Tyler (Wright) is and I was completely prepared for a surf-off. However, I also knew how incredibly capable Carissa (Moore) is at virtually every venue. I feel like I had a year’s worth of emotions packed into one heat. I won my first title here at Honolua Bay, but after my loss in the Quarterfinals, I was prepared for anything to happen. I’m really emotional right now.”

Danny Davis’ 44-minute snowboarding film Peace Park will be airing on ABC on Sunday November 30, 2014 at 11 AM PST.
