Yes. it’s time for the first Every Third Thursday of 2015. This time Dave Lee oversees a little technology borrowing from Lithe Skateboards to make a crazy snowboard design using cutting edge, top secret, skateboard construction. We’re not so sure about the snowboard, but that skate deck look pretty rock solid.

Former US Masters Surfing Champion Barry Ault, 71, died from a staff infection after surfing in San Diego, California the week before Christmas 2014 following rain storms, according to a story on NBC 7 San Diego.
Barry had gone surfing at Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma, just two days after a rainstorm. It’s still not clear if that staph infection came from storm runoff into the water that day, as there are several storm drains around Sunset Cliffs that empty into the ocean.
According to other reports, several of his friends also got sick that day, but the others recovered. Sometimes when the waves are that good it’s difficult for all of us to stay out of the water after a storm. Especially when it’s been a place that has so often offered an escape from most everything that troubles. Our thoughts are with Ault’s family and friends.

Lonely Planet, the publisher of quality world travel guides, has acquired a “strategic stake” in snowboarding and ski film making company Teton Gravity Research for an undisclosed amount.
TGR is part of a rapidly developing strategy of expanding Lonely Planet’s global footprint, broadening its offerings in television and video, digital commerce, and original content. The two companies will continue to operate independently of one another while working closely to expand content and reach, providing TGR resources to grow and evolve in the changing media landscape with a focus on high-end content. TGR co-founders, brothers Steve and Todd Jones, will retain their ownership interest and continue to lead TGR as co-CEOs in the company’s Jackson Hole home.
This one makes sense, right? Content distributors need quality content and content creators need distribution. For the official word from TGR, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]

In December of 2013 The Skateboard Mag co-founder Mike Mihaly’s wife Sara (mother of their three daughters) was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. After her first rounds of treatment the cancer has returned and is now in Stage IV. A friend of the family, Kate Patterson Baldwin, has set up a site on gofundme.com to help the family with their mounting medical expenses. Here’s what Kate says about Sara:
Somehow, even in the face of such giant obstacles, Sara manages to keep it all together with a positive and courageous attitude. She has summoned an undeniable strength that is exemplary and inspiring on all accounts; and, not only is she providing a beautiful example of strength and perseverance for her three little girls, she is, without a doubt, doing the same for me. I strongly believe that if we had more people in the word who could face challenge with the same grace and poise that Sara does, the world might be a gentler and kinder place.

Stab magazine founder Derek Rielly and Welcome To Paradise Now Go To Hell author Chas Smith believe that some surfers are still interested in viewing clever, well written groupings of words and photos related to surfing. And for all 11 of you who are interested yet have grown tired of the incessantly sincere sniveling of The Inertia they have created BeachGrit. Here’s how they see it:
BeachGrit is as fearless as it is fun. It does what no other space in surf does because it has seen it all and knows that surfing is light, loose and libertine. Every day is a new day and there is much to explore. Surfing is, after all, the most anti-depressive thing ever!
See? Doesn’t that snappy bit of prose lift your loins like a sandy crack selfie? Apparently, Anastasia Ashley’s literary rump wasn’t driving as many clicks as it used to so BeachGrit has enlisted Ruth Bader Ginsberg (above) as their new “it girl.” Follow the jump for the official word from Rielly & Smith or just click the link and see it for yourself.
