Vans is stepping up the world skatepark riding contest scene with the first ever men’s and women’s world championship tour titled the Vans Pro Skate (PS) Park Series.
Showcasing an international roster of top pros, and a total prize purse in excess of one half-million U.S. dollars, the inaugural Vans PS Park Series establishes the premier global points ranking system for Men’s and Women’s park terrain skateboarding. The 2016 Vans PS Park Series season consists of four Men’s PS Global Qualifiers and one Women’s PS Global Qualifier occurring over five months and across four continents, culminating with the Vans PS Park Series World Championships.
Nice to see all around transition rippers getting the world title recognition they deserve. We’re guessing our favorites Curren Caples and Grayson Fletcher will shut this series down. For the official word from Vans, (including event dates and locations) please follow the jump.
The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau is a strange surf contest beast. We never really like to get too excited about it because it so rarely happens. When it was announced that it was on this week, we let ourselves get amped. Shame on us as this morning Quik event director Glen Moncata called it off.
“Unfortunately, the Bay is not going to call the day today. The surf is not what we expected,” Glen Moncata, Quiksilver Event Director, said. “What we need is need eight hours of solid 20 foot surf, 40 foot faces, and unfortunately this storm got pushed way up North of us, so we are just not going to be able to run today.”
Waiting for a monster swell is a tough game and the window is open until February 29, 2016. Guess we’ll have to wait and see. For the official word from Quik, please follow the jump.
Head USA is recalling six models of helmets sold from January 2015, through December 2015 because the “helmets do not comply with the impact requirements of safety standards for helmets.” In other words, the helmets are not actually helmets.
This recall involves six models of HEAD ski and snowboard helmets: Agent, Alia, Andor, Arise, Arosa and Avril. They were sold in sizes M/L and XL/XXL in black, blue, green white and yellow, with straps in a variety of colors. . . HEAD, the model name, size and “Production Code: Dec. 2014” are printed on stickers that can be found by lifting the lining above the right earpiece.
If you are one of the 440 people who bought one of these helmets please contact Head at 800-874-3235 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or online at http://www.head.com/index.php?id=1313.
Update at 10:48 AM February 10, 2016: Due to a swell that did not materialize the Eddie has been called OFF by organizers. Whoops!
What a week for Quiksilver. They slip out from under hundreds of millions in debt (where did all that money go?) and they’re calling The Eddie on for Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the world famous Waimea Bay.
This will be the ninth time the event has been run in 31 years. Yes, it’s momentous.
Organizers anticipate a solid day of surf that will meet the event’s strict wave face height requirement of 40 feet, with favorable light winds in the morning, turning light trades by afternoon. . . “It has taken us six years to pull the trigger, but this is the first swell we have seen that is truly lining up as an Eddie swell,” said Event Director Glen Moncata.

GoPole, our favorite action accessories company, has announced that they’re now offering attachments for smartphones as well as other action cameras.
GoPole is no longer just for your GoPro camera! The Universal adapter (MSRP $12.99) will connect any camera featuring a 1/4 inch-20 tripod connection to any existing GoPole mount. Compatible cameras include Sony Action Cam, Garmin VIRB, Polaroid Cube and more. . . Consumers can also effortlessly capture selfies with their mobile device as well, thanks to the Mobile Clip (MSRP $14.99). This adjustable clip allows users to attach small or large mobile phones, such as the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and Samsung Galaxy S6, to any standard GoPro mount.
All of their stuff works fine with our Garmin Virb XE already, but this is good news for everyone with a image capturing device. For a complete overview of their new mounts, solar chargers, and more, please follow the jump.
Timbaland breaks down the world of pop cultural business success like no one else in this interview with Ebro and Rosenberg from Hot97. We don’t pretend to know a thing about the music, or the beats, or the scene, but the wisdom he conveys on what hits are, how they come about, and how to play the hit business game — especially his theories on the rise of “programmers over producers” and his own six-year cycle (26:40) — apply to every angle of action sports business.
We didn’t watch much of the 2016 Volcom Pipe Pro held January 27 – February 2, 2016, but we were lucky enough to catch the most stacked finals we think we’ve ever seen at Pipeline yesterday (February 2, 2016): Kelly Slater, JOB, Bruce Irons, and Makai McNamara.
At first we were wondering why 2 John Florence wasn’t in the mix, too, but Makai’s first wave (and his complete commitment to the task) made us realize we could get by without Mr. Blue Moon in a Pipeline final. Oh, and Kelly Slater’s surfing was pretty near perfect, which is always good to see.

Funny thing is, while this commercial is trying to be sarcastic, we find it hard to argue with most of the comments being made about the Mini. Then again, we’re probably not in Mini’s target market.
The best part of the ad series is when Tony Hawk talks about being an outcast (below). And maybe we’ll see him putting around in a Mini soon. Yeah, Harvey, we said “putting around in a Mini.”
