Snow Stacking Up For Tailgate Alaska

by The Editors on March 23, 2016

For big mountain powder riders there is no place like Alaska. And for people who love riding Alaska’s wild, raw mountains there is no event like Mark Sullivan’s Tailgate Alaska. This year the 9th Annual event runs from April 1 – 10, 2016. Which means, the countdown has begun and we’ve heard the snow is ready and waiting.

“Just in the past week we have had between four and six feet of snow,” says Tailgate Alaska founder Mark Sullivan. “And we are due for another huge storm – seven more days of snow – clearing the day Tailgate starts. If you have dreamed of going to Alaska – this year is off the charts.”

Sounds like this is the year, you know, if you like riding the big walls. For the official word from Tailgate Alaska, please follow the jump.

Happy 4th Birthday What Youth

by The Editors on March 22, 2016

Hard to believe it was only four years ago that Travis Ferré, Stuart Cornuelle, Scott Chenoweth, and Kai Neville got together (along with a couple perennial action magazine backers) and launched What Youth. Travis says:

The video above is the first moving thing Kai cut to harness the energy, the life, the vision and the fuck it that was inside of us. And we released it on this day, four years ago. We’ve made 13 issues of What Youth (14 in the works), produced and directed several films, and have a website and social media things that allow us to be ourselves right alongside you every day. Not much else to say besides: Thank you. Thank you a lot.

We’re still asking “What?” each time we flip through the magazine, but it sure is pretty and that paper is so stiff, and the ink smells good, and they’re still doing it up right, and that’s not easy. So congrats, What Youth, you’re almost five!

Burton Cuts About 40 Employees

by The Editors on March 17, 2016

burton_logo-tm.jpgIn what could be called the “Day before St. Paddy’s Day Massacre” the Burton Corporation reportedly cut 4 percent of their 900 member global workforce on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 according to a story on Yobeat.com.

Burton President John Lacy framed it this way in a memo to the company’s remaining employees:

What that really means is that we had to let some good people go. Friends and colleagues were affected in every area of our business, and in multiple regions, and it isn’t easy to say goodbye. We’ve now talked directly with everyone affected by these changes, and our HR team is working with each of them to provide full service support during this transition. These decisions are not easy nor are they taken lightly. Please know we will be doing everything we can to help ensure these individuals have the tools and backing they need to take on this next chapter.

According to the post cuts include “multiple key sales roles, such as sales director for Anon/Analog, the women’s brand manager and some product developers.” We also hear the Burton LA store will be closing soon and the NYC store will move to a more economical location. For the entire letter from the president, please click the link to Yobeat.

Eric Crane & Crew Unplug Electric

by The Editors on March 17, 2016

electric.pngKering, the monstrous French fashion company that still owns Volcom, announced yesterday (March 16, 2016) that they have unloaded the Electric brand to CEO Eric Crane and his management team.

The transaction, which is effective today, includes all the assets of Electric and the rights attached to the brand. . . Electric, a Californian premium sports and lifestyle brand that sells accessories including sunglasses, goggles and watches, was acquired by Volcom in 2008.

That’s probably the best route to freedom for everyone involved. For the official, though vague, word from Kering, please follow the jump. If you pay for the executive edition of that shopping eating blog, you can get a little more info from Mr. Crane, via Tiffany right here. Or get an even better version for free at Tea-Dub Business.

New Zealand’s New Cock n’ Balls Bowl

by The Editors on March 16, 2016

skate_800.jpg.hashed.924aef0c.desktop.story.inline

The design of a new addition to the skatepark in Rangiora, New Zealand apparently has some of the locals feeling like they’re getting the shaft, according to a story on One News Now.

“To roll with the pun, it’s [been] a bit of a cock-up,” local skater Mark Pijnenburg told Fairfax media. . .It’s already been labelled “the dick bowl” by some locals, he said. . . Public submissions against the design have been made including one saying it “looks like a giant doodle”.

Not sure what they’re pissed off about really. Certainly some skaters will find the new bowl fun to ride. Plus, it appears to have a lot to grind. We just hope it’s not too hard for the kids. Locals need to nut up and remember that sometimes a bowl is just a bowl.

Nixon Finally Gets Smart With Android

by The Editors on March 16, 2016

nixon_mission

Today (March 16, 2016), Nixon is at Switzerland’s world famous watch and jewelry expo Baselworld to rollout The Mission, their first ever smartwatch powered by Google’s Android Wear and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 2100 system-on-a-chip. In otherwords, a real-deal Android smartwatch designed specifically with action sports in mind.

The Mission features a suite of custom applications tailored to action sports, as well as industry-leading durability and a category-first 10-ATM (100 meter) water-resistance rating. In addition to the full capabilities of the Android WearTM platform and apps, the smartwatch introduces Nixon’s custom Mission app powered by Surfline and Snocountry. The Mission app places live conditions information at a glance of the wrist and features a custom activity-tracking application developed in partnership with Trace, the leader in action sports activity tracking.

And with built-in GPS, this watch could be a prime  replacement for the Garmin fenix 3 that is currently occupying our wrist. But we won’t be sure about that until we get one to test out for a couple weeks. For the official word from Nixon, please follow the jump.

Snapper Delivers Gold Coast Pro Kickoff

by The Editors on March 11, 2016

Snapper Rocks provided exactly what the men needed to blast through Round 1 of the Formerly Bankrupt Now on Top of the World Pro Gold Coast. The 2016 competitive surf content generation season has officially kicked off and even though Mick Fanning (above) plans to surf a soft production schedule this year, he didn’t act like it today as he blew past trials winner Wade Carmichael and Matting Banting.

“I wasn’t tense, I was laughing and relaxed. Even paddling out in the heat I wanted to surf and get a couple of good waves and it was fun,” said Fanning winning after his heat. “I always just want to go surfing. I’m not as freaked out to be the first one in the water anymore it is more about just surfing when I want to surf and being in love with it.”

Most impressive surfing of the day goes to defending champ Filipe Toledo who used Snapper’s ramps to work his patented arial wizardry. For the official word from the event owning content generation company responsible for this television production please follow the jump.
