This didn’t take long. Jaime Owens, the former editor of GrindMedia’s discontinued title Skateboarder Magazine has been named editor in chief at Transworld Skateboarding Magazine. Since they’re all in the family this makes perfect sense.
“Jaime Owens is an incredible addition to the TransWorld SKATEboarding team,” said TWS Publisher Monica Campana. “Jaime’s work within the industry extends itself into multiple areas of relevance, influence and expertise. Jaime is a solid individual with a sincere love of skateboarding. We all are excited and proud to have him on our team.”
Owens has worked for GrindMedia of 15 years and knows what’s up, for certain. For the official word from GrindMedia, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

With the addition of action fashion industry icons Danny Kwock (formerly of Quiksilver) and Troy Eckert (formerly of Volcom) the What Youth team may be headed in some new directions. Here’s the low-down on the new “strategic partners.”
Kwock will be taking on a primarily advisory position, while Eckert will have significant involvement in the marketing of the What Youth brand, as well as an active role in content creation and project management. Kwock and Eckert also both bring their extensive relationship networks in action sports, and beyond, to this fast growing media brand. . . What Youth Editor/Founder Travis Ferré is very excited to explore the opportunities both Eckert and Kwock bring to the table. “To have the opportunity to strengthen and grow What Youth, while simultaneously adding the creativity and experience of Danny and Troy to our team is a huge honor and incredibly exciting for us. We’ve all been inspired by the creative work Troy has done — especially in Magnaplasm and The Bruce Movie — and Danny has proven to be one of the surf world’s most revolutionary visionaries who continues to push surfing and surf culture.”
Kwock and Eckert also bring a lot more than creativity and experience to the What Youth table (if you know what we mean). And that could be even more important to the brand over the long term. If you’re the marketing director of an action sports company (or better yet, an energy drink company) why waste time developing relationships with a bunch of different little media companies when you can do all your shopping at an advertising super store? That’s seems to be the question Source Interlink’s Grind Media must have been thinking when they partnered up with Europe’s largest action sports media company Factory Media.
With the launch of this new co-operation agreement, GrindMedia and Factory can now offer marketers increased North American and European reach through their respective media sales teams. . . Factory and GrindMedia’s advertising clients will now be able to book digital advertising and content distribution campaigns through the UK, Germany or U.S. offices of the two independent companies. GrindMedia will represent Factory’s North American digital audiences, while Factory will represent GrindMedia’s European sports fans.
How simple is that? Just drop in your advertising and they’ll turn the factory on and grind media out to the world. Everyone’s a winner. For the official world from GrindMedia, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

At the beginning of summer someone at What Youth (Travis Ferre) sent us one of their magazines. We don’t really read magazines anymore, but once we started paging through we realized that What Youth was a lot more interesting than we expected from an energy drink and northwest footwear giant sponsored print mag. Here read a little slice from issue number 5:
Tennessee Williams said, “Enthusiasm is the most important thing in life.” And we agree. And I think about how lucky we are to see it illustrated in front of us here daily. A motherfucker like Ozzie Wright will make you believe in that line. A lizard like Dion Agius will make you hold that line sacred. A mischievous throwback from like Noa Deane will remind you of that line. Because it’s easy to look around the world and see pink stucco parking lots, violence in beautiful countries, and the millions of reasons life is bad. Or dwell in lethargy and melt into your text messages forever. But it takes a special tropical fish to find inspiration in all those bubbles. It takes an Ozzie Wright. It takes a Dion Agius. It takes an Earl Sweatshirt.
See. Do these What Youth guys know how to connect it all or what? Click the link and send them $15 for the new issue.

Brooklyn, New York’s BAMcinematek has lined up one seriously deepcollections of skateboard filmmaking as they present Skateboarding Is Not A Crime. The 24-film series runs September 6-23, 2013 at The BAMcinematek and BAM Rose Cinemas. No one deconstructs what many of us take for granted like the New York art crowd and this festival is no different. Here’s an example:
The ultimate in counterculture coolness, “skating” has made an irresistibly sexy subject for movies thanks to its rebel-athlete superstars, SoCal slacker fashion, and jaw-dropping jumps, ollies, tricks, and stunts.
Right. That said, this collection of skateboarding film includes the classics from every era featuring The Devil’s Toy from 1966, Scott Dittrich’s Freestylin‘, Spike Jonze’s Yeah Right, and Hollywood classics like Thrashin’ and Gleaming The Cube. Souce Interlink, the parent company of GrindMedia which owns Transworld Media, announced today (August 21, 2013) that they have decided to “recapitalize the company.” In other words, they sold another piece of themselves to one of their current owners (GoldenTree Asset Management) in exchange for “enhanced liquidity” more cash.
“The tremendously improved capital structure will provide both Source Interlink Media and Source Interlink Distribution with the ability to maximize transformational opportunities across their respective industries,” said Michael L. Sullivan, president and chief executive officer of Source Interlink Companies. “This transaction will put both businesses in better positions to strengthen strategic partnerships and make investments to enhance their position in their respective industries.”
Yes, this means GrindMedia will have more money to get things done, so that’s likely good for them and not so good for their competitors (yes, they still have at least three in our space). If the action media business intrigues you, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Ever since the GrindMedia consolidation of the action sports media business on May 20, 2013, there seems to have been nothing but changes for the employees of both companies (no duh!). The first casualty was Transworld Surf Magazine. Now, it’s GrindMedia’s turn to take a hit as the publisher has reportedly decided to stop what little print and digital operations Skateboarder Magazine had left and move forward with their leading skateboard media property TransWorld Skateboarding, according to a post on SkateDaily.net.
“Unfortunately market conditions have forced us to have to make the difficult decision to cease publication of Skateboarder,” said Norb Garrett, SVP Group Publisher of GrindMedia. “It’s especially disappointing given the strong interest and initial success we’ve had with the new digitally focused editions; our Skateboarder team has worked incredibly hard producing a cutting-edge product that has been successful at reaching a larger audience online. We will take all of the learnings from Skateboarder’s efforts and apply them to TransWorld Skateboarding and our other brands as the digital model has demonstrated real promise.”
Yes, they say you learn more in failure than in success. If that is true, then things should be looking up nicely for the crew at Transworld Skateboarding, indeed. This also means that there’s one more face off yet to be played between Snowboarder Magazine and Transworld Snowboarding. Wonder which way that one will go? Maybe they’ll both stay.
