Tow-in legend Laird Hamilton discusses Monday at Nazaré, Portugal with the mainstream media and has a few interesting things to say about Maya Gabeira and Carlos Burle world record attempts.
“Maya, she doesn’t have the skill to be in these conditions,” Hamilton says. “She should not be in this kind of surf and I feel like it’s Carlos’ responsibility to take care of her and make sure she doesn’t drown.”

Former surf, skate, snow retailer (K5) turned Specialty Retail Consultant Jurgen Schulz is happy to announce the grand opening of JTS Specialty Retail Consulting’s first project, Bing Surf Shop in Encinitas, California.

Maya Gabeira had another near drowning today (October 28, 2013) while hunting a world record wave at Nazaré, Portugal.
She was unconscious when she was finally rescued. Her team mate, Carlos Burle rescued her from the sea and performed CPR.
Maya soon recovered her consciousness and was taken to a hospital. She is fine now.
According to Transworld Surf Gabeira suffered a broken ankle but is otherwise fine.

For some reason we’ve always been stoked on lake surfing. It’s so wrong, and so not the ocean, and so ephemeral that it’s nearly perfect when it happens. Watching surfers catch these rides on Lake Michigan’s freshwater walls on October 26, 2013 brings it all back to basics, even with inch-thick wetsuits and yacht-sized boards.

Network A follows up its hot surf girl web series Alana with a new four-part hot surf girl web series staring Laura Enever titled I’m Laura.
We’re guessing this one will feature lots of scenes with a low clothing quotient. As that seems to be the key ingredient for Youtube web views this will probably rake them in as well. Check it.

Well, if the contest was about who could link up with the most forward facing brands in the shortest amount of time it looks like the minds behind the Association of Surfing Professionals have done a right nice job of it for 2014. The ASP has reportedly done deals with Youtube, Facebook, and ESPN.
“Professional surfing is a truly global sport which demands media distribution partners with significant reach. Our newly announced partners have tremendous presence in the innovative media arena and, together, they build the foundation for the ASP media platform,” Paul Speaker, ASP CEO, said. “I personally believe surfing is one of the most dramatic and dynamic sports on the planet and it’s an honor to work with tremendously inspirational athletes in bringing their feats and stories to the public.”
Here’s how the deals sort out: Youtube will host the live stream of 26 events, Facebook will be the “primary social platform parter” and ESPN will “showcase the sport’s elite events” by hosting highlight shows (for those sorry saps who still watch TV) immediately following the events. Kai Otton, may have won the 2013 Rip Curl Pro Portugal today over American Nat Young (in tiny surf), but the bigger news is that after dispatching Mick Fanning in Quarter Final two, Otton pushed the ASP World Title race between Fanning and Kelly Slater to the Banzai Pipeline in December. While we were all thinking about the ramifications of that, Otton was reveling in the moment of a win that was a long time coming.
“It’s the weirdest feeling ever, I just can’t comprehend it,” an ecstatic Otton said. “I really want to dedicate it to my Granddad, he passed away the year I qualified and never saw me on tour so this is for him. It seems like this event was a little bit of a grind, every heat the tide changed so dramatically you never really knew what was going to happen!”
