Elio Canestri, a 13-year-old surfer from the French island of Reunion, was killed April 12, 2015 by a shark while surfing Les Aigrettes, according to a story from the Associated Press.
In a post on Instagram Jeremy Flores said:
ANOTHER shark attack in Reunion island this morning. 13 years old Elio was one of our best up and coming surfer. Words can’t describe how sad and angry i am. So young !!! Heart breaking News . RIP 🙁 Petit Elio, 13 and, a été attaqué par un requin ce matin au spot des “zaigrettes”. Il était un de nos meilleurs jeune espoir. Il avait toute la vie devant lui. J’ai la haine. Quelle tristesse… Repose en paix marmaille 🙁
According to reports Canestri was surfing in an “off-limits” area that had been closed after a non-fatal shark attack in February. Our thoughts are with Canestri’s parents, family, friends and the entire Reunion Island surfing community.

Frankly, this is about all we know: Australian Mick Fanning won his fourth apparel sponsored event at Bells, and Clarissa Moore won her third consecutive. If we had anything else to say that would be written right here. But it’s not. So, if you’d like to read a certain privately owned entertainment company’s event and online streaming production notes from this latest commercial shoot at Bells, please follow the jump. Vans has a whole new line of go-aheads aka shower slippers aka flip flops, aka slaps, aka sandals developed in conjunction with the Vans Surf Team. They’re called the UC1.
. . . the UC1 is built with comfort and function as its number one priority. The UC1 starts with a molded Ultracush sole, creating a comfortable, functionally-driven foundation. Next, specifically engineered flex grooves are designed to allow the sandal to move with your foot, allowing moisture to drain away while maintaining the perfect fit, wet or dry. Finally, the UC1 utilizes a three-point upper with a foam-backed, mesh-lined strap and reflective details to create a sandal the truly embodies “classic style” with “modern comfort”.
The UC1 Sandal is available this spring in three classic color ways. Click the link for more info.

So earlier today a privately owned entertainment company specializing in event and online streamed content production kicked off another surfboard riding production in Australia. This time at Bells Beach. The timeline for their production runs April 1 through 12, 2015. During that time they hope to generate massive amounts of quality, sellable content. So far they’ve been able to shoot seven scenes which were, of course, streamed live online.
Here’s the odd part. In order to participate in one of these productions, or to have a brand featured in the produced content one must make large payments to the privately owned entertainment company. Yet, while charging everyone to be involved, the privately owned entertainment company is at the same time expecting other professional content production companies to distribute this content to their audiences without being compensated at all. They’d also like these other companies to help them legitimize their privately owned entertainment productions as “events” by having their productions featured on websites and in print and presented as authentic, genuine sports news. In other words, while they’re charging everyone for all the work they do, they’d like everyone else to help promote their productions for free. What kind of sense does that make?
No sense, that’s what.
If you’d like to know how the scenes they shot earlier today turned out, please follow the jump because today we’re throwing in our copying and pasting services for free. You’re welcome. [click to continue…]

After a grueling year on the WSL World Tour in 2014, Smith International team rider CJ Hobgood wanted to get away and press the reset button before another big year in 2015. Together, with fellow Smith Team Riders Brett Barley and Alex Smith, the three made an impromptu mid-winter strike mission to the Caribbean side of Panama for some of the punchy, tropical beach breaks.
Life Beyond Walls: Panama is a behind-the-scenes style edit that follows the three surfers from three diverse areas as they enjoy the simple life of surfing, eating, surfing, and sleeping for five days. The clip was filmed and edited by Jon Hetchkopf with accompanying photos by Mark Welsh.

Nothing like a fast new car and a couple good waves to get the blood pumping in the morning. Highsnobiety, Mercedes, and Marlon Lipke get together to make it all work. This edit is another reminder, however, that each time we see a Mercedes it makes us want to test drive a Tesla. . . is that weird?

Beachgrit.com’s Chas Smith has started a petition on Change.org suggesting that there should be “No Hate-Mongering in Surf Media by The Inertia.” We don’t read the inert site ourselves, but apparently a writer there started a petition to get Gabriel Medina suspended from the Pro Show because he went off script during that apparel sponsored event at Snapper Rocks. And Chas didn’t like that one bit:
Trey Highton, whose title is Poet/Surf Scholar/Ocean Activist (and whose name might actually be Henry), posted a 15,000 word piece today titled Gabriel Medina, Samsung and the Axis of Evil. In it he argues that Gabby should be fined $101,000 for using swears and criticizing commissioner Kieren Perrow (hereafter “Pierrow”) and suspended from Bells.
We couldn’t believe Highton’s story (or petition) was anything more than a joke and/or link bait. (Even though that event production company has apparently fined the current world champ). But again, we don’t really understand where most of the site’s writers are coming from. If you’d like to jump in on the high jinks please, click the link.

A privately owned entertainment company specializing in event and online streamed content production held a surf apparel sponsored event at Coolangatta, Australia’s Snapper Rocks last week. Well, the finals were last week, but the event seemed to drag on for days and weeks before that (February 28 – March 13, 2015).
This ground breaking event was a live, online video presentation of scantily clad, fit, young men and women riding waves on foam and fiberglass boards. The production did not go off without a few hitches, however. Sadly, the ocean did not cooperate with the event production company’s timeline and days had to be added to their content procurement schedule. Then one of the performers (who happened to have received the event production company’s highest honor last year) spoke honestly and passionately about his performance in substandard location conditions against another performer who apparently became surly during the shooting of one scene. Because the event production company is focused on producing high value promotional entertainment content in an efficient, professional way, they didn’t seem to appreciate one of their actors going off script.
Aside from that, and a few instances where certain actors appeared to receive higher scores than they should have, the event was a success. The content created by the event production company was of very high production values. The camera work was amazing, the graphics stunning, the online stream stayed up most of the time, and the actors appeared to enjoy performing their parts in the production. Even the local people visiting the production set appeared to enjoy watching the content being created. Guess that’s a win for everyone.
For the event production company’s official overview of exactly how their commercial entertainment package was produced, performed, and concluded, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]
