SIA In The Clear On Airport Security

Clear Logo.JpgThe United States is becoming more and more like Honduras every day. Want to skip a security inspection, just pay the man in charge.

Now, thanks to a company called Clear those with a little extra cash can buy a card containing their “biometric security information” allowing them to skip regular airport security lanes and zip through a special lane just for them. And it’s only $89.

But wait, there’s more: members of the SnowSports Industries America (SIA) will get a discount.

“SIA is excited about the opportunity to offer its members this additional savings and to add Clear as one of many SIA membership benefits. This partnership will help to ease travel stress and reduce travel time for members throughout the year and for next year’s SIA Snow Show in Denver,” said David Ingemie, SIA President. “SIA works hard to provide membership benefits to members that improve their business operations. These benefits range from research to shipping services and now include Clear.”

Personally, we’re not that into turning over our fingerprints and iris scans to any “independent security firms” just to save three minutes at airport security, but that’s just us. Follow the jump for all the details.

Snowboard Company For Sale On Craigslist

SbforsaleLately Craigslist has been getting heat for offering up thrills of a more adult style, but now a “respected” snowboard company based in “SoCal” is up for sale in the Orange County Business section of Craigslist.

Selling an action sports/snowboard brand on craigslist? Sure, why not?! Isn’t doing things in unusual ways what it’s all about? We would like to unload a burgeoning snowboard and action sports label (hardgoods & softgoods) to an interested party who could manage its affairs in a more successful & professional manner. Basically, we have “grown too much to be small” and we are still “too small to be big.” You can take this Action Sports company to the next level by purchasing or absorbing it as an already-existing independent brand with a unique market presence.

Any guesses?

Gretchen Bleiler On Coke

Coca-Cola is apparently stepping up its Olympic efforts by signing up six athletes, according to a Tripp Mickel story that we can’t read because we don’t subscribe to Sports Business Journal. And it appears that Gretchen Bleiler is on the team.

The company will be featuring snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler, figure skater Evan Lysacek, hockey player Angela Ruggiero, speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno and the pairs figure-skating duo of Keauna . . .

And that’s where our free preview ended. Nice work, Gretchen. Now we’re thirsty.

Loop’d Wrangles More Capital

Loopdcom-Action-Sports-Community-For-Motocross-Surf-Skate-Snow-Bmx-Bike-And-More.JpgThe Loop’d Network (formerly Sponsorhouse) has reportedly rounded up $800,000 in what TechCrunch calls “an undisclosed round of funding from investor Tech Coast Angels and existing private investors.

Loop’d’s platform is a social network for athletes to promote themselves and and participate in a network of online communities based around action sports. Loop’d lets also members connect with brands, including Monster, Oakley and PacSun, for sponsorship.

The company apparently plans to use the money to stay in business.

High End Travel With The Pros

Dking Trio.JpgFor aging weekend warriors who idolize Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama, or Jeremy Jones and dream of spending some quality man-time with them, former heil-guide Mike Overcast may have just what they need. It’s called EpicQuest and according to a story in Fortune Small Business this high end travel company may have the perfect vacation.

EpicQuest plans a calendar’s worth of seasonal trips for the wealthy, adventurous travelers. . . These trips will run in the range of $1,000 to $1,500 a day. For a little extra, clients can get what Pattee calls the “backstage pass” – going surfing (or snowboarding) with professional athletes like Hamilton, or skiing with Olympic gold medal winner Tommy Moe.

While it seems kind of weird to pay pro surfers and snowboarders to hang out with you, we guess rich people are used to that of thing. . .

Still Life With Snow, Part Deux Opening

Last night, while the finals of the The Pro-Tec Pool Party were blazing away at The Block in The City of Orange a more serene scene was unfolding in Costa Mesa, California at the opening reception of Still Life With Snow Part Duex at The ARTery @ The Lab.

With their successful gallery showing in The Village at Mammoth Lakes on the weekend of May 2, 2009, Torrey Cook and The Machine Design wanted to give people in SoCal the chance to view and purchase images from the Still Life With Snow show so they brought it south.

051609 78LThe ARTery is an intimate gallery made up of three shipping containers placed off to the side of Orange County’s Anti-Mall The Lab and is a perfectly understated venue for the works of some of snowboarding’s best photographers.

Still Life With Snow Part Duex includes images from a who’s who list of shred soul stealers including: Trevor Graves, Mark Gallup, Cheyenne Ellis, Shem Roose, James Cassimus, Chris Carnel, Danny Zapalac, Jeff Curtes, Jesse Loomis, Ryan Hughes, Alisa Mokler-Harper, Cole Barash, Christy Chaloux, Tim Zimmerman, Embry Rucker, Ryan Boyes, Susie Floros, Rob Mathis, and Matt Clausen.

In fact, Torrey Cook has gathered so many iconic images that cruising the show is like floating through snowboarding history. We remembered many images from the magazines, but seeing them together and on a gallery wall was impressive. Each photo cued another memory. Our favorite was the classic James Cassimus photo of Jake Burton airing out one of his original designs (nose rope included) under the blazing Southern California sun at Wrightwood. It seems so long ago, then again, not really.

The Story Of Duncan MacPherson

Duncan MacphersonTwenty years ago, a Canadian ice hockey player named Duncan MacPherson, 23, disappeared while snowboarding on the Stubai glacier in Austria. His still frozen body was found 14 years later by resort workers. Planetski.eu retells the story once more hoping to find some answers.

In that time his parents, Bob and Lynda, fought a long campaign to try to find him, to discover what happened and came across what they believe was bureaucratic bungling, police intransigence and even corruption. There are accusations of something even more sinister. . . .They claim the authorities had no desire to discover what had happened to their son and wanted the whole incident hushed up to protect the multi-billion euro Austrian tourist industry.

Mammoth Open Until June 14

042309-55-1Rejoice West Coast shreds! There’s no need to head to Mt. Hood just yet. Mammoth Mountain is staying open until at least June 14, 2009, according to a blog post on the LA Times.

And we always love it when Mammoth says, “at least” because we know if they really wanted to they could keep the mountain open until July 4th, no problem.
