We’re not exactly what you would call huge Nitro Circus fans, however, there are occasions when Travis Pastrana pulls off some cool stuff. Like this Big Wheel backflip at Bob Burnquist’s house spotted by the ever vigilant Kilwag at Skate and Annoy.
Having hung out at the top of that drop-in we can tell you this is way more messed up than it looks on video.
Former pro snowboarder Brett Johnson was responsible for some of the funniest stuff ever seen in snowboard movies: there were several installments of the Snowboard Bikers with Dana Nicholson from the Creatures of Habit series by Jon Freeman, there were all the little clips from Snowboarder TV, and then there was the epic GI Joe vs. Ski Fun Ken.
Writer Colin Whyte catches up with Brett Johnson and gets the back store on the entire clip in a story on ESPN.com/Action. Here’s what Brett says:
I was doing some traditional animation for Doug Palladini and their Snowboarder TV project in tandem, but all in all we spent about 8 months on it. We shot it in two weeks, sent the cans off to the developer and had no clue what it was going to look like. At that point, I’d never shot 16mm before, or done really any stop-motion animation. Artie picked me up at the airport and just gave me a headshake and a long ‘dude’. I thought the footage was totally bunk or something. The whole way back to Truckee, Artie held me at ‘dude’…
Where is Brett now? Oh, he’s creating web strategies for Forture 500 companies and wearing a suit to work every day.
We hung out with Tim Humphreys at the Flow booth at the SIA Show last week and the kid definitely has his shit straight. We didn’t watch the Winter X 13, but got to see his runs right here thanks to Sessions.
No matter where we were on the floor at SIA it seemed like our conversations were constantly being drowned out by the music pumping from the Skullcandy booth. The Omatic Snowboards booth was right across the isle from Skullcandy and here’s how Todd Richards was taking it. . .
Notice all the rad surfing by gnarly surfers in this savage surf clip? Oh wait, no surfing? Whoops, guess this clip is all about fashion. Say it ain’t so Joe. . .
Ever question skateboarding’s ability to heal? First Skateistan and now the Uganda Skateboard Union. If this isn’t a viral video for some corporate interest, it should be. Thank you, Board Master.
The biggest party of SIA09 was the Skullcandy Snoop Dogg show in Rain at The Palms Hotel and Casino last night (Thursday January 29, 2009). Rick Alden and his crew handed out twice as many tickets as there were room for in the club. This resulted in a line 400 people deep for two hours and near rioting at the entrance of Rain.
After hanging around The Palms for half an hour getting more bummed by the minute we finally got an extra special Sessions miracle (Thanks, Larry and Jessica) and the next thing we knew we were sitting next to Session owner Joel Gomez on the couch of his VIP suite looking down on a crowd of over 2,000 people.
Mix Master Mike got the party started and then around 1:30 AM Snoop Dogg came on and with reminded everyone why he sells so much music.
Travis Rice was a regular on the Transworld Riders’ Poll stage last night but he saved his best acceptance speech for last. In it he mentioned all the riders who hyped him this year and more importantly gave props to the next generation of riders who are going to take snowboarding even farther. Just watch it.
Bob McKnight is apparently using “technology” to help Quiksilver stay ahead of the “wolf pack” and surf a thrilling “tsunami” and still “rip it up” according to this new commercial for Microsoft.
Could the launch of this commercial possibly be more poorly timed? Microsoft does it again.
