Snowboard Riot For Wii

by The Editors on January 1, 2009

This new non-Shaun snowboard game for the Wii looks a lot like an old snowmobile game we used to play called Sled Storm, but that was 10 years ago. . . now it’s an Oakley-sponsored snowboardcross racing game called Snowboard Riot. Wait, was that Gretchen Bleiler who just rode by.

Shaun White Snowboarding Jibbing Along

by The Editors on December 19, 2008

Shaunwhite-TmAccording to story on Gamespot.com reviewers have not be kind to the Shaun White Snowboarding games.

Despite an avalanche of hype, the game wiped out with critics on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, earning less-than-gnarly respective scores of 63 and 62 out of 100 on Metacritic. GameSpot’s own reviewer was even less kind, giving the two games just 5.0 out of a possible 10. . . . This afternoon the Reuters news service reported the game sold 259,000 copies in the US in the two weeks after its November 16 launch. The figure, which was supplied by Arcadia Research analyst John Taylor, says sales of the game racked up $13.6 million during the month. France-based Ubisoft declined to confirm the sales numbers.

Looks like Ubisoft might still have a ways to go before they recoup the $10 million they spent on advertising in the first weeks of November. The company won’t comment, but it sounds like Shaun is planning on a follow up.

Now that I have the knowledge and I can speak to programmers better and I understand a lot more about what’s possible and what’s not possible, this will all help with the next game,” White explained.

Ubisoft says “no comment.”

GoLearn Skateboarding On the iPhone

by The Editors on December 18, 2008

Golearn

Santa Cruz Skateboard Shop has partnered up instructional applications developer Whagga Software to produce an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch called GoLearn Skateboarding. The horribly named, 348 mg app costs $4.99 and reportedly allows skaters to “learn different tricks with over 45 high definition videos with slow motion, multiple angles and detailed instruction, and find nearby skateboard parks.”

Skaters want to see different tricks performed by different people in different places. By providing an intimate discussion of how to re-thread a truck axle or watching Josh Mattson walk you through doing a Miller Flip, it’s as if we are speaking directly to the skater. Couple that with a GPS-driven Skate Park Locator for the traveling skater and the GoLearn Skateboarding application is unparalled in today’s market. Our partnership with Whagaa is an exciting one allowing us to transform our vision of Action Sport applications into reality,” comments Danny Keith, CEO of Santa Cruz Skate Shop.

We haven’t downloaded the app yet (and we’re not too optimistic about it teaching us backlips on a rail), but we’ll let you know. If you do download it make sure you do it from iTunes on your computer, not on your phone. This thing is HUGE!

Firewire Wins Innovative Product Award

by The Editors on December 13, 2008

Logo BwAt San Diego Connect’s 21st Annual Most Innovative Products Awards ceremony in La Jolla, on Friday December 12, 2008, the awards didn’t all go to the electronic or biotech firms. No, Firewire Surfboards ran away with the Action and Sports Technology Best Product award.

The design features carbon composite rods inserted near the surfboard’s rail, or edges, to enhance deep, carving turns. Connect introduced the action sports category last year to recognize the rapidly expanding cluster of recreational sports companies in the region.

It’s nice to see the words “technology” and “surfboards” in the same sentence.

Darren Navarrette’s Skate2 Interview

by The Editors on December 9, 2008

EA is rolling out Skate2 and G4TV’s Raymond Padilla sat down with Darren Navarrette to talk video gaming with the “handplant specialist.” What kind of games does Navarrette like?

I guess I like shooting people. Yeah? Though I’m more of a sniper kind of guy. I wish there were more games that only emphasized just sniping. Of course I like Madden, NBA Live games, that kind of stuff. It’s funny, because I always liked football as a kid, but I never really played it in an organized way, you know? Now I know a lot more about football, just from playing Madden.

Football?

Fingerboarding The iPhone

by The Editors on December 1, 2008

Touchgrind is a new $4.99 skateboarding game for the iPhone. The guys at Gizmodo gave it aa run through and they seem to think it’s pretty cool. We’re not up for paying the $4.99 to do our own test, so we’ll just trust them.

It’s a fun time waster with a seriously high level of polish. Due to the limitations of the iPhone, I’m not sure how exactly to solve the issue of not knowing where the hell you’re going, but if they do come up with a solution you’re looking at one of the best games available for the platform.

To pick up a copy visit the Apple iphone App store and search for it.

Nixon Gives Good Headphones

by The Editors on November 27, 2008

Headphone View-1We mentioned this months ago, but Nixon is finally kicking off the official launch of their new line of headphones. The rigs are set to hit retail stores in December, just in time for Christmas. Chad couldn’t be happier.

Having the ability to re-think the product development from the ground up, how you want to use it and the way you use it has been a fun challenge,” states Nixon’s Marketing Director, Chad DiNenna. “The team’s involvement all the way down to the audio sampling process, matching the music they listen to most with how this product will perform, elevates the product for everyone. I’m excited for people to discover the product.”

The headphones, which will retail for between $40-$200, will be going head-to-head with Skullcandy. And from the photos we’re giving Nixon the win on packaging already.
