Hey, computer nerds. Check out this big news from Burton. The company has reduced server costs by over 80 percent according to Novell.
Burton migrated all of its mission-critical systems to Dell* servers running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, including SAP* ERP, Business Intelligence, CRM, Enterprise Portal, as well as its Oracle* applications. The company plans to use the built-in Xen* virtualization to reduce its number of physical servers and adapt quickly to changing workloads. The ability to quickly deploy virtual servers will greatly improve the IT staff’s ability to add new applications as needed. Virtual servers will also help the team create better development and testing environments on existing hardware.
Take that AT&T. For more of this scintillating info, follow the jump.

Seems like the “skateboarder as businessman” angle on Tony Hawk is getting pretty dusty, but that hasn’t stopped Entrepreneur Magazine from using the hook to discuss Tony’s newest video game (and controller) Tony Hawk Ride which comes out November 17, 2009 just in time for Christmas.
How does he feel about the launch?
I’m scared to death about it because I know how much is riding on it, how much Activision has invested in it. I brought this idea to them, and they’ve dedicated two years of development and research, but who knows how it’ll do? It’s a scary prospect. But I know it’s good.

Tony Hawk announced today via Twitter that he will be speaking at The Twitter Conference in LA on September 22, 2009. He will join Loveline’s Dr. Drew, former Star Trekker LeVar Burton, and celebrity lawyer Mark Geragos on a panel titled Twitter and Celebrity: A Match Made in Heaven?
Not sure what I’ll be saying cuz I’ve been wingng it so far… but it’s working.
Match made in heaven? Well, it appears to be working quite will for Tony. Hearing Tony speak will cost $299. That’s how much the conference costs, which reminds us: all the money in social media is in telling other people how to make money in social media. . . funny how that works, isn’t it?

While we’re no fans of super flaired Flash websites, if a website owner is going to over-load their regular site with Flash graphics and other wiz-banglia, then the least they can do is build out a little mobile site for those of us who are riding the web with our phones all day. That’s exactly what Dakine has just done and the site works really well.
A newly launched, interactive site gives users access to DAKINE goodies while on the go. Content is broken down into categories including snowboard, ski, surf, skate, bike, windsurf, kiteboard, girls and music. An abbreviated version of DAKINE’s website, the mobile site, www.DAKINE.com/mobile, is compatible with most media rich-enabled cell phones.
In fact, if we were going to bookmark Dakine’s site on our home rig, we’d probably link up to the mobile site because it’s that much easier to use.

We haven’t tried it out yet, but TiltnTwist games just kicked off Snowboarding TNT in the Apple AppStore for #1.99, according to a blurb on IGN.com.
Snowboarding TNT is a fast-moving sports challenge that requires players to tilt and twist their handsets to control the downhill action and avoid obstacles – no need to bother hassling with tiny buttons to control game action.
It looks like the old Intellivision Skiing game switched over to snowboarding, so it’s not at the top of our current buy list.

According to a story on AppleInsider.com, Apple has patented a new technology that will allow snowboarders to track their airtime and pretty much everything else they could want to know riding including:
. . . loft time; a speed of the vehicle; a peak loft time; an average loft time; a total loft time; a dead time; a real activity time; an average speed; . . . successive records of loft information; successive records of speed information; a distance traveled by the vehicle; a height achieved by the vehicle off of the surface; and an indication of a number of a successive record relative to all successive records.
It’s going to be like a dashboard for your snowboard. Guess there will be no more guessing who got the most air. It will be right there on your iPhone and we’ll finally have the charts and the graphs to prove that we suck. How nice will that be?
