As if we weren’t spending enough time in front of our computers or staring down into our iPhones, the Vancouver based goggle company Recon Instruments introduces their new Transcend Goggles in collaboration with Zeal Optics. The goggles are apparently the first to be “GPS-enabled.”
Transcend provides real-time feedback including speed, latitude/longitude, altitude, vertical distance travelled, total distance travelled, chrono/stopwatch mode, a run-counter, temperature and time. It is also the only pair of goggles in the world that boasts GPS capabilities, USB charging and data transfer, and free post-processing software all with a user-friendly, addictive interface.
The goggles will be available October 10, 2010 and retail for US$499 (click here to buy a pair). Now, if they only had a video in for our iPhone display, we’d be set for the winter.

Today, GoPro is announcing the release of the HD Hero 960. A more affordable version ($179) of their HD Hero.
The HD HERO 960 is an entry level version of the original 1080p HD HERO, sharing the same cutting edge video and audio capture technology but with resolutions on the HD HERO 960 limited to 960p (1280 x 960) and 720p (1280 x 720) at 30 frames per second, and WVGA (848 x 480) at 60 frames per second. Also removed from the HD HERO 960 is the HERO BUS™ expansion port that is present on the full featured 1080p HD HERO. The HERO BUS allows for LCD, secondary battery and additional expansion BacPacs™ to be attached to the original 1080p HD HERO camera, but not the HD HERO 960.
We’re not going to be riding around like Al Franken with a camera on our heads any time soon, but we can think of all kinds of great uses for a small, cheap waterproof HD video camera. Follow the jump for more info or click here to buy one. [click to continue…]
The game allows. . . you to play the contest waves through two different game modes: SOLO Mode allows players to become ”Master of the Spot” by completing a series of challenges that get harder and harder. Lots of prizes offered by Quiksilver, in particular a package including board and wetsuit, are to be won by drawing via this game mode: MULTI Mode offers a chance to challenge his own Facebook friends in head-to-head contest by creating yourself your own challenges.
We’d play the game and review it, but we’re not up for trading an email for it right now. Check it out if you are. You could win a board and a wetsuit and probably get better waves that the ASP Top 32 who had another lay-day last night.
We just can’t get enough of Shaun White around here and that’s about to change because Ubisoft, the makers of Shaun White Skateboarding, has just announced that Shaun’s game will soon support stereoscopic displays on 3DTVs, according to a post on Gamasutra.
Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the title will use Sensio 3D technology, which Ubisoft last used in last year’s release of Avatar: The Game. . . “The gaming experience is very sensitive to image quality, and we know from past collaboration with Sensio that the company’s Sensio 3D format delivers the highest-quality images,” said Shaun White Skateboarding Executive Producer Patrick Naud.
It will be great to see that rich, thick, forest of red hair flowing right out of the TV as Shaun shreds past. Wonder if Shaun will do some signature Oakley 3-D glasses to go along with it?
Nokia (the other phone company) started out bringing skateboarding video games to the street or is it vice versa via their Push Project. Now they’re doing the same this with snowboards through a partnership with Burton Snowboards for Push Burton.
Beginning in 2009, Nokia’s Push project has been working on a small scale to integrate sensors onto skateboards, collecting motion data about tricks and movements the skater is making while riding. This data is pushed wirelessly to a Nokia phone carried by the rider, where individual tricks are collected, analyzed, scored, and potentially tracked onto a game-like interface. Nokia is now working with Burton Snowboards to produce this platform on a larger scale to turn snowboarding sessions into connected games.
Not really sure what the application is, but it is reportedly launching in 2011. Maybe this will get a few kids (and bloggers) off the couch. If only there was an iPhone app for this. . .
Last week Youtube.com began testing some live broadcasts with several different partners. In one of their tests they featured a live interview with Tony Hawk in conjunction with YoungHollywood.com and according to Techcrunch.com no one showed up.
Well, Tony Hawk just finished an appearance on Young Hollywood right now, and the number of viewers never went above 500, according to the view counter at the bottom of the player. For most of the segment, it was much less—at one point I saw 9 viewers, then 81. As a point of reference, when we livestream TechCrunch events, we often get 2,000 to 3,000 concurrent viewers, and that is without being promoted on YouTube’s homepage. So 500 viewers for Tony Hawk is really nothing.
Then again, we didn’t know Tony was going to be on. If he’d told us we could have rounded up a couple dozen more people, no problem.
Tony Hawk gets Chaz Ortiz and Dancing With the Stars Louie Vito to demonstrate the new skate-snow crossover video game Tony Hawk Shred, the Swiss Army knife of video games. . . looks kind of confusing.
