Shred Or Die? Tony, Please.

by The Editors on October 24, 2007

When Will Farrell launched the site funnyordie.com with his writing partner Adam McKay they launched it on the popularity of one viral video: The Landlord. A skit in which Adam’s two-year-old daughter Pearl played Will’s landlord come to collect late rent. It was inspired comedy and the site got massive amounts of traffic. Obviously the brand name celebrity and the quality content added up to success in the short term.

Now Farrell and McKay have taken the same idea to action sports and launched Shredordie.com with the help of celebrity action sportsman Tony Hawk and some scraps of video left over from his production company 900 Films. What the site ends up looking like is, well, left over footage from 900 Films. We’re sure it will get better over time, but really, Tony, is this what you want to pin your Internet hopes on?

Happy Birthday, Mickey!

by The Editors on August 24, 2007

24Munoz1 MdWe missed it, but yesterday was Mickey Muñoz’s 70th birthday party at Doheny State Beach. According to the OC Register the party was the work of the Doheny Longboard Association, the San Onofre Surf Club and the Hawaiian Surf Association.

Guests [weren’t] supposed to bring gifts for Muñoz. Instead, Muñoz said a donation to the Doheny fundraiser will suffice.

We hope the day went well for everyone of the 1,000 guests.

Aniston Stands Up For Paddling?

by The Editors on August 22, 2007

Anistan-1

From the celebrity blog What Would Tyler Durden Do comes these wonderful photos of Jennifer Aniston on vacation with the Arquettes in Hawaii. Here what they had to say:

These pictures, showing Jennifer Aniston on vacation yesterday in Hawaii with Courtney Cox and David Arquette, are boring, but at least no one is electrocuting dogs. I don’t get what she’s even doing. It looks like it has disaster written all over it, like the odds of falling in are the previously uninvented 140 percent. I guess I’m sort of impressed. I couldn’t do this any more than I could run down some rolling barrels on stilts.

She does look pretty comfortable with that paddle in her hands. Dry even. And we know it’s not exactly easy.

Paris Hilton Surfing

by The Editors on August 17, 2007

Since Paris Hilton got out of jail it seems like she’s living the wild life by spending time in the water learning to surf. Surfermag.com’s Scott Bass questioned people about what they think of Paris becoming a surfer girl. As usual, the guys don’t mind and girls think she’s going to ruin the sport. Us, we don’t think it’s a problem at all. . . especially if she keeps having wardrobe misshaps.

Laird Hamilton Charges to Appear In A Book

by The Editors on July 19, 2007

In the “get paid for everything” world of professional big wave surfing, Laird Hamilton has just pulled off an interesting deal. Susan Casey, a New York City-based writer has reportedly signed a “million-dollar deal” for a new book about the science of surfing and the hunt for big waves. Casey is paying Laird to appear in the book according to the New York Times:

. . . the celebrity surfer who will be a central character in her book, to put her at the center of the action. “I’m asking him to put me in the middle of his dangerously and logistically complex undertaking,” said Ms. Casey, whose previous book, The Devil’s Teeth, was about great white sharks. “It was inevitable that we would have to have some kind of incentive for him to do that.”

Way to get paid, Laird. Truth is if you’re going to help something sell, you should get a piece of it.

Seven Couples Hitched On Tony Hawk

by The Editors on July 12, 2007

Sj2Tn20070710-0711Jef Wed.Ii11Tony Hawk has had his name associated with some pretty whack stuff, however, this may top it all. Nicole Medica, 26, and her groom, Jeremy Farley, 29, were one of seven couples married on July 7, 2007 at 7:07 AM while riding Tony Hawk’s Big Spin roller coaster at Six Flags St. Louis.

They had originally planned to marry on the Sandy Creek Covered Bridge Historic Site in Hillsboro Saturday evening until they heard about the “Thrilled Ever After” radio contest on 93.7 FM. “It just seems fun,” Medica said. “It’s definitely us–not conventional.”

Thanks, Tony.

by The Editors on March 17, 2007

Male model Marcus Schenkenberg and surfer Kelly Slater caught up at a “lavish Red Bull party.” Aside from being jetsetters and easy on the eye, they have another thing in common. . . sharing super model. Oh yeah.
