The Secret To Slater’s Success?

by The Editors on July 21, 2008

Bd0B8F82-176D-4410-9408-733B184152F5LThe South African Weekend Post would like us all to know that after “a string of celebrity relationships behind him, including busty Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson, it seems Billabong Pro champion Kelly Slater has settled for the girl next door,” with Roxy girl Kalani Miller.

Down-to-earth Miller, 20, who is a Roxy women‘s surfwear ambassador, is definitely a refreshing change from other big name celebs Slater has been involved with like Anderson, supermodel Gisele Bundchen and movie actresses Cameron Diaz and Kirsten Dunst.

Yes, and Kalani is probably a large part of what Kelly has described as “great things going on in my life.”

by The Editors on July 18, 2008

Bar RefaeliTaking a bigger step into high fashion Hurley International has signed up “Leonardo DiCaprio’s main squeeze” Bar Refaeli for a new campaign.

She will appear for the brand’s spring 2009 runway show as part of Los Angeles Fashion Week in October. Refaeli, 23, might even lend a hand in designing some of Hurley’s collections. “Anyone can hire a model,” said Lyndsey Roach, Hurley’s vice president of marketing for the young contemporary division. “We wanted to do something different. She lives this lifestyle.”

Yep, we’re thinking Refaeli’s assets ought to move some units for the H.

At the ESPN ESPY Awards on Thursday night snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler won the award for best female action sports athlete. She edged out skier Lindsey Vonn, surfer Stephanie Gilmore, motocrosser Jessica Patterson, and snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis.

That’s a huge award,” said an elated Bleiler on Thursday, following a long night of post-awards parties. “All these athletes were there, all these football players, the Boston Celtics, so many amazing people, and just even to be nominated is an honor. To win one, it’s a huge honor.”

Sheckler Goes Bareback On ESPN Mag

by The Editors on July 16, 2008

080728 Halfsize 300Dpi WebreadyWe’re guessing this Cryin’ Ryan Sheckler cover is going to be a big seller in gay neighborhoods.

Eighteen-year-old pro skateboarder Ryan Sheckler is oftentimes ridiculed by his competitors for being a “sell out.” The undeniably gifted three-time Dew Cup winner, 2007 X Games Street Gold Medal winner and reality TV star has been accused of making street skating go pop. In the new issue of ESPN The Magazine, “Just Another Lonely Millionaire Skateboarder,” writer Allison Glock reports on Sheckler as he leads a pack of action athletes redefining stardom.

Yep, exactly the kind of story we expected. It will be perfect for ESPN’s sensitive, touchy-feely readership.

We’ll never say that Shaun White isn’t working for his money. Not after you see what he has to go through. Take this game preview at the video game convention E3 held July 14-17, 2008 for instance. . . . it’s just so sad.

Jesse Ventura: More Honor In Surfing

by The Editors on July 15, 2008

2Jesse071508When former Governor and Pro Wrestler Jesse Ventura was asked if he would be running for State Senate in Minnesota Jesse says he’d rather keep surfing in Mexico.

“It was a difficult decision but it came down to almost this — surfing versus the Senate and I found surfing to be much more honorable than the Senate. The ocean doesn’t lie to you. The waves don’t lie to you. My government does lie to me today,” said Ventura.

Seems reasonable.
