Sal Masekela In South Africa

by The Editors on July 1, 2010

Thumbnail.Aspx.HtmlWe’ve been following Sal’s Twitter feed and know he is in South Africa, but being neither soccer fans nor TV viewers we didn’t really know what he was doing there. Thankfully, the South Africa’s Sowetan has filled us in a little.

Sal Masekela, son of legendary jazz legend Hugh Masekela, is in the country on assignment for his employers – American sports broadcaster ESPN. . . . His gig covers off-beat stories about South Africa – from profiling Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena and exploring grassroots soccer to the impact of HIV-Aids. . . But probably his most prized project is a 10-part documentary series with his equally famous father Hugh. . . Together they explore the people, culture and inspiring landscapes of South Africa. The older Masekela relives memories of growing up under apartheid. This is the first time they have collaborated on a major project.

Guess that explains it. . .

Spicoli Becomes A Paskowitz

by The Editors on June 30, 2010

06 281 Doc671FIt makes perfect sense for Sean Penn. The guy who stared as Jeff Spicoli and narrated Dogtown and Z-Boys returns to his Hollywood surf roots to play the alpha male of the Paskowitz clan, Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz, in a biopic that he will produce, according to a story in Variety.

Penn will produce a film based on the eccentric Paskowitz and his family and is eyeing the untitled project as a starring vehicle. Alan and Gabe Polsky, who recently produced the Werner Herzog-helmed “Bad Lieutenant” reboot, are also on board to produce.

Wonder who will play Jonathan?

Shaun White Out Of Dew Tour #1

by The Editors on June 22, 2010

White DewShaun White’s triumphant return to skateboarding will apparently have to wait until another day according to a report from the Associated Press (Mr. White is big news now). He is out of the Boston Dew Tour Boston event due to injury.

Event spokeswoman Katie Trotsky says White’s representatives report he rolled an ankle while training and won’t be able to participate in the two-day 2010 Dew Tour event. However, he will be in NBC-TV’s broadcast booth for the vert finals Saturday.

Can you image what that’s going to do to the Dew Tour TV ratings? But that’s okay, he was too tired to compete at the US Open of Snowboarding this year, too. Then again, maybe he’s just sitting it out so he can attend the Twilight Saga: Eclipse premiere in Hollywood on June 24, 2010. Could that be it?

by The Editors on June 4, 2010

Article-1283889-09E11Dbb000005Dc-372 224X679There is nothing like hitting the streets for a little NYC skate action in wedge heels. Nobody does it better than Kate Hudson, according to story in the Daily Mail.

Running in heels is one thing, but Kate Hudson took it to a whole new level as she attempted to go skateboarding in a pair of wedge heels. . . And the actress’ outfit – a short shirt dress – was not exactly appropriate for action either. . . But thankfully the ridiculous scene was all for show on the Manhattan set of Something Borrowed, her new movie. . . The 31-year-old has been pictured in a series of smart outfits while on location in New York. . . . Kate is starring in the film as Darcy, a beautiful bratty bride who gets everything she wants.

by The Editors on June 3, 2010

Sbj201005310101-01Shaun White has reportedly left his long-time agent Mark Ervin and IMG and made the move to Hollywood’s uber-huge Creative Artists Agency, according to a Tripp Mickel story in the Sports Business Journal.

After eight years of working together, White last week dropped Ervin and IMG for CAA. He now is represented by a team of CAA agents who will work to develop marketing partnerships, appearances and television, music and motion picture opportunities for the 23-year-old.

Creative Artist Agency represents pretty much every A-lister in the business including (but not limited to) Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Ashton Kutcher, David Beckham, LeBron James, and of course, Tony Hawk.

This ought to keep those millions rolling.

Pamela Anderson’s Next Trick: Surfing

by The Editors on May 5, 2010

PandersonAlready having tortured the world with her snowboarding (and her dancing) Pamela Anderson now claims that she’ going to learn to surf, according to a post on OK! (the British tabloid, not the shop).

“I’m going to get in the ocean,” she told us. “I promised myself I’d learn how to surf this year. I surf a little bit and so I’ve got my pink surf board and I’m ready to get in the ocean. . . “I’m always learning new things. I think it’s really important as we get older to not think that you’re not too old to learn something new. It makes you live better.”

It’s difficult to believe there’s anything she hasn’t exposed herself to.
