Those winter storm warnings that were issued throughout Southwestern Colorado earlier in the week have left their mark at Wolf Creek Resort in Colorado. With three feet of fresh snow, the resort is opening three lifts and selling $33 lift tickets Saturday and Sunday, October 8-9, 2011.
Treasure, Bonanza and Nova will be operating from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM servicing beginner, intermediate and expert terrain, including Alberta Face and Treasure Falls. . . Services will include: Ski School, the Wolf Creek Ski Rentals, the BoarderDome, the Upper Lodge and Treasure Sports.
If you’re really into catching the first flakes of the season you better get on the road because Wolf Creek is pretty much a 15 hour drive no matter where you start. Follow the jump for more info. [click to continue…]

Personally, we think 19 inches of new snow is more than enough to get the lifts running, but Mammoth Mountain management has yet to flip the switch. Not to say they’ve ruled it out entirely if this snow keeps piling in.
Mammoth is scheduled to open for the 2011-2012 winter season on Thursday, November 10, 2011 but early openings are not out of the question if snow conditions allow. The earliest opening date ever for the resort was October 8, 1994.
And that would be like, tomorrow. Sadly, we don’t think that’s going to happen. But those Avy chutes are certainly looking good right now. Follow the jump for the rest. [click to continue…]

If this keeps up Mammoth Mountain could be open even before their scheduled November 10, 2011 opening celebration. For all the details on opening weekend follow the jump. [click to continue…]

SoCal OG snowboarder and industry veteran Todd Proffit is the new Advertising and Events Manager at Mountain High Resort. It’s a bit of a homecoming for Proffit.
“Mountain High was the first place I ever snowboarded so it’s great to get back to my roots,” Proffit said. “I’ve dealt in many other sections of the action sports industry but my passion has always been snowboarding. I’m really looking forward to the coming winter season and to continue to elevate Mountain High as the best resort in Southern California.”

. . . and then we learn that Tahoe Dangerzone mastermind Nick Visconti is on Southern California’s Mountain High Pro Team. Somehow Mountain High Dangerzone just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
Guess if SoCal resident Shaun White is going to ride for Northstar at Tahoe, then Tahoe resident NIck Visconti might as well ride for Mountain High. Follow the jump for the rest of the details. [click to continue…]

We’ve never really understood resort sponsorships. Does actually riding at the resort have something to do with an athlete’s endorsement? For instance, until last week we expected golfer Tiger Woods to actually wear a TAG Heuer. And, until this year, we figured Shaun White actually drank Red Bull occasionally and rode at Park City.
So when we saw that Shaun’s new “home mountain and primary training resort” is now Northstar-at-Tahoe, we wondered if this means he’ll have to ride there. Sounds like he might:
“This feels like a homecoming because I have spent so much time riding at most of Vail Resorts’ mountains,” said White. “With Northstar as my home mountain, I now have the ideal place to train and continue to grow as an athlete and I am looking forward to all the possibilities this partnership brings.”
As part of this deal Vail Resorts (the owner of Northstar-At-Tahoe) will donate $5 of every Epic Season Pass sold to Shaun’s chosen charity St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Follow the jump for more details or click here. [click to continue…]

Don’t kid yourself. There’s money in storing other people’s kids. Woodward Camps knows better than most that there is almost no end to the stacks parents will drop to put their kids somewhere else for a week or 10 each year. So, in order to get more parents to spend more money Woodward is partnering with Boreal Resort on Woodward Tahoe set to launch in the summer of 2012, according to a post on the Boreal website.
Gary Ream, President and long-time leader and creative force behind Woodward explains, “Woodward Tahoe will bring a brand new set of experiences and opportunities to everyone who visits Boreal. As Woodward continues to grow its presence in winter sports, Tahoe is the perfect next step. We have learned a great deal from our success at Copper. Bringing “The Woodward Experience” to Boreal will be a great opportunity and an exciting adventure for all of us.”
And it’s just in time for the 2014 Olympics. Follow the jump for the rest.

Dick Reuter, a member of Kirkwood Mountain Resort, died Monday, July 4, 2011 at the resort, according to a story in the Tahoe Daily. Reuter was 88 years old.
“Dick Reuter was a mountain man’s mountain man,” said Dave Myers, vice president of operation for Kirkwood Mountain Resort. “A real pioneer and tough as nails, Dick basically single-handedly installed chair #11, ‘The Reut’ of which the lift is named after him.” . . . Reuter’s mountain resort career began in the late 1950’s in Squaw Valley after a long career as a trapper and logger in the Lassen Park area, Dalzell said. . . Reuter helped fall trees to clear ski runs at Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley and worked as a ski patrol leader at Squaw Valley during the 1960 Winter Olympics where he met his wife, Jeanne, and started a family.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

This is what it looked like at Squaw Valley’s High Camp this morning. That’s right it snowed overnight on June 28, 2011, according to a story in the Reno Gazette Journal.
The snow level came down to about 8,200 feet, which was enough to drop snow at Squaw Valley’s High Camp and the summit at Northstar, said weather service meteorologist Scott McGuire.
It’s just in time for 4th of July snowboarding. But seriously, when is someone going to put a fork in this thing?

Mt. Hutt Skifield was the first resort in New Zealand to open this weekend (June 26, 2011) with what is their latest opening in “at least a decade” according to a story in the Ashbutron Gardian.
It is only a partial opening with only the Magic Carpet and the Quad chair, accessing half of the main Broadway trail to open, meaning plenty of skiing or snowboarding for beginners and intermediate riders. . . “There isn’t any off-trail snow yet but we have to play with what we’ve got.
“Having the mountain open has a huge flow-on effect for this area and people around here need something to perk them up.
Resorts in North America are still open and New Zealand doesn’t have any snow. Weird weather cycles, indeed.
