Oregon’s Mt. Hood Meadows resort was forced to close early yesterday (Wednesday, December 28, 2011) after the resort got over five inches of rain in 24 hours, according to a story on KOIN 6.
Several inches of water pooled on top of the snow creating a wet sloppy mess for skiers and snowboarders. . . “It looks like a lake over there,” said snowboarder Katie Kesee of the puddles near the lodge. Kesee drove up to Meadows from Vancouver Wednesday morning. “Usually it’s snowy and nice around Christmas, not this year,” she added. . . Meadows decided to close all lifts and lodge operations at one o’clock. “There’s nobody up here, nobody,” said Kesee.
Looks like the West’s worst season ever, continues in full effect.

Kimberly Bland, a skier from Florida is suing South Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Ski Resort after she was hit and injured by an on-the-clock mountain employee riding a snowboard, according to a story in the Reno Gazette-Journal.
[Bland] was stopped on the lower Olympic downhill run on the Nevada side of the resort, at about 3:50 p.m. on Jan. 18, trying to decide where to ski next, when Heavenly lift operator Daniel Barreno crashed into Bland on his snowboard, the suit said. . . Bland, a paramedic in the Miami area, was knocked unconscious by the impact and was taken by ambulance to the Barton Hospital emergency department, said the lawsuit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Reno. . . She suffered injuries to her head, neck, shoulder and back, the suit said.
In the suit Bland is seeking “at least $350,000 in damages, plus costs and fees.” We’ll say this again, though it seems so obvious to us. Any snowboarder who can’t avoid hitting a person stopped on a run, has no right being on the snow. The courts will decide how responsible Heavenly is.

On Friday, December 9, 2011 lift tickets at Mammoth Mountain will be free (if you sign up for MY Mammoth). Not a bad trade for giving the mountain access to your personal information. Then if you round into Saturday, it will be like having two days at half price. Or, if you book lodging at $199 a night you’ll get two lift tickets included. Kind of a lot of think about, right? Stop thinking. Ride free.

DC Shoes announced today that they have brokered a deal with Mammoth Mountain that will allow the Huntington Beach, California footwear company to put logos all over the mountain’s Unbound terrain parks.
“The choice to work with DC is a no-brainer for Mammoth Unbound. We both share a commitment to the core athlete without sacrificing access to snow sports for new entrants. We couldn’t be more excited about what this partnership will bring to our terrain parks in both features and events,” said Mammoth Mountain Public Relations Specialist, Eric Meyers.
Mammoth’s snowboard parks are valuable real estate and apparently, DC is ready to pay up as well as outfit the park staff with shoes and snowboard boots. Follow the jump for the official word. [click to continue…]

With the advent of man-made snow, resort openings really don’t mean that much anymore. But when a resort with no snowmaking (like Mt. Baker) announces that they are going to open Friday, November 18, 2011 with an expected 25-40 inches of new snow, it’s something good.
Here’s what Gwen Howat told the Bellingham Herald:
“It’s snowing and blowing and it’s a blizzard, so we’ll take it,” said Gwyn Howat, the ski area’s operations manager, of conditions on the mountain late Wednesday afternoon. “(We’re) looking forward to a powder-filled season with La Niña on our heels here.”
Need a better reason to head north this weekend? Probably not.

For the 15th season in a row Mountain High was the first Southern California resort to turn on the lifts and open for snowboarding. If Boreal hadn’t opened a week ago, they would have been the first.
“We are very excited to lead Southern California into the 2011/12 season,” said Karl Kapuscinski, President and CEO. “This is one of our earliest openings ever and with more cold weather in the forecast we are looking forward to a fantastic start.”
Lift will run daily from 8:30 AM to 4 PM with night riding beginning Thanksgiving weekend. Follow the jump for all the details. [click to continue…]

A Basin opened today (October 13, 2011) on an 18 inch base of nozzle blast (and a few inches of natural snow) and Loveland is reportedly opening tomorrow (October 14, 2011 on the white ribbon of death pictured on the right.
Looks like Denver area shreds can finally get their slide on. Side note: Wolf Creek killed them all in the annual “first to open” competition by getting their lifts running last Saturday.
