Mammoth Shutters June Mountain

by The Editors on June 22, 2012

June LogoOpened in 1961, June Mountain has always lived in the shadow of Mammoth Mountain. First as a competitor, and then after Mammoth founder Dave McCoy bought the mountain in 1986, as a quieter, mellower sibling to Mammoth. But for many years, that was a good thing. It never had the crowds, it had a long, fun park, a once epic halfpipe, and on powder days Carson could compete with some of the best powder lines in the West.

June also has a long history in snowboarding. The mountain hosted the first televised snowboarding event the OP Pro of Snowboarding in 1989, and in 1991 Craig Kelly and Keith Wallace dropped off the roof of the Chalet with the Mono County Sheriff on their tail only to be arrested in the parking lot. The mountain has played host to snowboarding contests, photos shoots, and more, but it looks like those days are over as Mammoth CEO Rusty Gregory announced yesterday (June 21, 2012) that Mammoth will not operate June Mountain for the 2012-13 season.

“June has operated at an annual deficit each year since its purchase in 1986,” said Gregory. “It is time to invest some of this subsidy into the analysis and planning required to position the resort for a sustainable future, then secure the approvals and financing required to create it.”

Guess those dreams of connecting Mammoth and June with a new base lodge below San Joaquin Ridge just never worked out. For the official word, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Bridger Bowl Remains Mostly Closed

by The Editors on March 28, 2012

Montana’s Bridger Bowl Resort is only running two lifts today after patroller set avalanches yesterday caused some of the biggest wet slab slides seen in years, according to a story on KTVQ.com.

“Avalanche cycles like this one are rare. It was only the second time in my 22 years of avalanche work that I’ve seen wet slab activity on this scale. Yesterday, the ski patrol triggered avalanches with explosives that gouged out groomed runs and road cuts plus put debris up to 20 foot deep in the gullies. New snow yesterday morning, above freezing temperatures, and a moist snowpack sitting on facets had stability teetering. Avalanches broke on soggy depth hoar at the ground. By midday explosives weren’t needed and the patrol ski triggered wet loose slides that would step down to the facets,” Chabot says in the report.

Nice of them to get that all done before they open the lifts back up.

Massive 100-Year Avalanche At Mt. Baker

by The Editors on March 16, 2012

Mt Baker Trees3An avalanche that local rangers are calling a “100-year-event” blazed a path down Mt. Baker’s Shuksan Arm on Thursday morning March 16, 2012 according to a story on KIROtv.

Warming temperatures have caused unstable snow conditions, causing the Mt. Baker Ski Area to close. . . According to the Mt. Baker snow report, the area has received 110 inches of snowfall in the last six days, and snowfall this month has surpassed the entire month of March in the record year of 1998-1999.

The slide closed Mt. Baker for the day, but thankfully, no one was hurt and the only thing the slide destroyed were trees. Baker was closed yesterday, but will be back open today at 9 AM.
