Cole Barash: PDN’s Choice New Photographer

by The Editors on March 2, 2009

73074-20090302 Pdn30 04 Colebarash.JpgSnowboard photographer Cole Barash is only 21 years old and it seems like he’s been around for ever. Shooting first for the snowboard mags when he was fresh out of high school, then Forum Snowboards, and for the past two years he’s been on the Nike Snow program. This month Photo District News has chosen Barash as one of their top 30 new and emerging photographers in their story PDN’s 30 2009.

While shooting action is a big part of his business, Barash also shoots portraits and behind-the-scenes images. “Snowboarding culture is much more than just the action,” he relates. “I want to show what the trip is like getting there. I want to show the crazy story in the hotel room after.”

Wonder if Cole ever had to sit through a “you’re wasting all your talents” lecture with his high school principal. We’re guessing no.

Jeremy Fish Ambushes Fecal Face

by The Editors on February 26, 2009

Photo-1In preparation for his Fecal Face Dot Gallery opening tonight, February 26, 2009, skate artist and former Think Skateboards art director Jeremy Fish has painted a 30-foot-long mural with three dimensional characters in it according to a story in the Xpress.

The mural-in-progress, which covers two of the Fecal Face Dot Gallery’s four walls at Gough and Market streets, depicts a wooded scene of half-finished cartoon animals and trees. Fish carefully draws the perky lips belonging to one of the trees that overlooks what seems to be a future battle scene. . . . The artist has been crafting the mural for 25 hours, but states he only has a few hours left of touching up the details. World-famous skateboard filmer and photographer Dan Wolfe is in the room shooting time-lapse photographs of the process while old-school East Coast hip hop bumps from small speakers in the corner.

The Ambush opening party is tonight at 6 p.m. at Fecal Face Dot Gallery – 66 Gough St. (@ Market St.), San Francisco, with an after party at The Uptown, 200 Capp St (10-2am).

Simon Evans On Island Time In NYC

by The Editors on February 21, 2009

Picture 2

Simon Evans is a former pro skateboarder who wrote for the British skateboard mag R.a,D. in the early 90s. Now he is an artist with a new show which opened last night (February 20, 2009) at the James Cohan Gallery in New York City. Here is the logic behind the show:

. . . these days he’s expressing himself in scotch tape, pencil shavings, colored pencil and white-out. He uses everyday materials to create vivid stories through collages. For a new show at the James Cohan Gallery in Chelsea, he’s tells the story of Robinson Crusoe, creating the things Caruso used to keep himself alive when stranded on a desert island. Evans said he was hoping to bring text and visual art together.

The show runs through April 4, 2009, but you can check it online right here.

Shepard Fairey Arrested On Way To Opening

by The Editors on February 7, 2009

44936271The Boston Police Department seems to have a flair for street art themselves as they apparently chose to arrest artist Shepard Fairey on his way to DJ a party celebrating his Friday night February 6, 2009 art show opening at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art.

Police allege that he tagged locations in the Massachusetts Avenue and Newbury Street area and the railroad trestle by the BU Bridge, said department spokesman Officer James Kenneally. . . Fairey faces arraignment Monday in either Brighton District Court or Roxbury District Court or both, said Suffolk district attorney’s spokesman Jake Wark.

According to Fairey this is the 15th time he has been arrested.

Arkitip Magazine Cuts Schedule

by The Editors on February 5, 2009

Arkitip0050-Detail-FrontIt’s amazing to us that Arkitip has been able to produce the amazing magazines they’ve been creating for the past three years, however, it looks like the economy is taking its toll on the specialty publishing market as well.

According to an email sent out to advertisers by Tracy Forman, Arkitip, has “made the decision to decrease our magazine publishing frequency from 6 issues to 4 issues a year.”

These changes in the economy have forced us to look at what we are as a brand and focus on further defining it to our customers. We have a groundbreaking publication, a spectacular web property, a thriving online store and thousands of devoted fans of everything Arkitip does. Publishing the magazine 4 times a year does not diminish any of this and will free us up to focus on many other projects that we have had the opportunity to explore before, but never the time.

We always think of cutting print and moving more to the web as a good thing, so congratulations are in order. Follow the jump for the entire email.
