Michael Blabac is apparently done with is book tour and now DC has put up a special website to celebrate, according to a post on Skatedaily.net. Here’s what Bryce Kanights had to say about it:
Dig into the site and absorb his vivid portfolios, related video content and pick up a copy of the book…a must have for any skateboarder new school, old school or no school. It’s time to get schooled!
The National Steinbeck Center, a sometimes functioning, strangely modern looking museum plopped right in the middle of the lettuce fields of Salinas, California celebrates the life of California writer John Steinbeck and that’s why we find it odd, that they are looking for “skateboard art” for an art show they are curating called “What the Deck.”
The National Steinbeck Center is seeking artists for an exhibition and fundraiser that will have the artists showcase their work on a skateboard deck in the “What the Deck?” art show. The works of about 50 artists will be exhibited in the center’s rotunda. Live skateboarding and exhibit sponsors are needed, with proceeds to benefit the National Steinbeck Center and Dorothy’s Place soup kitchen in Salinas.
Nothing says skateboarding like the Joad family. . .
For the next two months Walnut Creek, California’s Bedford Gallery is presenting Carrie Lederer’s art show Full Deck: A Short History of Skate Art. The show features more than 400 decks plus other stuff, according to a story in the San Jose Mercury News.
The rolling canvases, each little more than a few feet long and a half-foot wide, are colorful works of Pop art, graffiti art, cartoon art and even fine art. Each deck tells a story about a pro skater, the company that made it and the artist who created the images on it. They can be silly and fun, like the deck by enjoi showing kittens and rainbows on one side of the gallery, or take on the darker tone of Todd Francis’ environmental works for Element Skateboards.
The opening party is from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday July 9, 2009. Sean Cliver will be there signing copies of his book Disposable. The show runs through September 13, 2009.
Surfindian in Pacific Beach, California will be hosing a one-night only art benefit for the Mattson Family on Friday, June 26, 2009. Music will be provided by Mattson 2.
And the following artists are participating:
Silent Auction 7pm – 9pm Art to be “in hand” to winning bidder by 9:30pm 100% of the proceeds will go to the Mattson family. $5 suggested donation at the door
Sometimes it’s good for all of us to be reminded of how much we all love skater/artist/ human Ed Templeton. ESPN (with help from Micah Abrams) has been kind enough to give us this reminder in both text and video form all on one page. Check it out.
We’re not sure Kelly Slater will appreciate this or not, but Manhattan Beach, California artist Alison Wright and surfboard shaper Mark Brog have created a piece of art on display today at the Culver City Art Walk titled “If Slater Bowled.” The piece features a 10-foot tall bowling pin along with a bowling ball that is 4 feet in diameter, according to The Beach Reporter.
“The concept of the work responds to Los Angeles’ love affair with heroes as well as to the long, narrow characteristics of the gallery itself, which is featuring a group show of artists whose studios are in the Helms Building,” Wright said. “Several of the artist’s studios will be open in addition to the gallery during the art walk.”
Brog will reportedly try to surf the bowling pin after the show is over. Come to think of it, maybe Kelly should try it out on the WCT. Couldn’t hurt, right?
