It is true that Don doesn’t go out much and spends that vast majority of his time hunched over his desk working on something for a client or his own insanely detailed pieces. Over the years his work has become smaller, not in scale but in the finite spaces within each painting. It has become sharper, that’s not to say he has been sloppy; quite the contrary. It is the over all look of his more recent imagery. This mural typifying this new phase of his career. I can’t wait to see what he does next.
The old Corona Del Mar Becker Surf Shop is on it’s way to becoming a Hobie retail store, but a mural that was recently completed on the side of the building has been met with some criticism, according to a story on Corona Del Mar Today.
Vandals covered a brand-new mural with four-letter words, five-letter words and pejoratives . . . The mural, which was completed less than two weeks ago, is part of a makeover of the old Becker Surf Shop. Painters spent days on the project, which turned out so well that families had begun using it as a backdrop to snap photos of their kids. The graffiti was on all areas of the wall and also on the front of the store. By 9 a.m., however, a worker was using rags and cleaning solvents to remove the paint.
Apparently, someone thought new colors and geometric designs were very “gay.”
Dave Hickey, in a recent essay writes: “In its initial vogue, these works spoke directly to a new kind of artistic decorum—less aggressive than pop, less ideological than Minimalism, and less maidenly than post-painterly abstraction. . .
Seems lately that all of us are getting forced into being a little more professional about our data (gross understatement). Seattle-based photographer Chase Jarvis breaks down his digital workflow from beginning to end.
It’s basically a free seminar on keeping your data safe. And we all could do more of that. . .
Photographer Grant Brittain (who’s been on an art show terror lately) will be showing some of his portraits and other works in a show with Josh Higgins at San Diego’s Subtext Gallery from July 30 – August 29, 2010.
Friends and fellow artists Grant Brittain and Josh Higgins will grace the walls of Subtext in a joint venture of unrelated themes. Brittain’s portraiture of some of skateboarding’s greatest names through the years features icons and underground heroes. Higgins’ poster-art focuses on his work with punkers, musical heros, and charitable causes. Together, the collective work suggests what it would be like to eavesdrop on these guys hanging out, having a beer, and comparing broken wrists and paper cuts.
It’s a long way off, but you might as well put the opening party in your calendar now: Friday, July 30th, 6-10pm
