Laguna Beach, California’s 210 AR4T Space is hosting an artist reception for their new show Cinema 15, curated by Ben Brough, on Thursday, February 3, 2011.

In a world full of action, adventure, horror and romance, the bizarre and sci-fi, we welcome you to the exit the normal and enter the act of fifteen artists who see cinema. . . . A dynamic new show featuring 15+ original works by 15 leading contemporary artists, a mixed bag of styles flow together to create a production of monumental proportions. The movie making process itself inspired Brough’s 15-head concept. “The creation of movies are made by a group coming together to form a whole production for our viewing pleasure,” he says. “Cinema 15 brings that group involvement together with a cast of emerging and established artists.”

The show features work by Steve Olson, Christian Jacobs, Gomez Bueno, Phillip Dvorak, Alex Weinstein, Thaddeus Strode, Craig “Skibs” Barker, Carl E. Smith, Jamie Heinrich, Ben Brough, Tyler Warren, Bad Otis Link, Sean Fahlen, Nick Simich, David Lloyd. In other words, this is going to be good. We haven’t seen Bad Otis in years!

The opening reception is on Thursday, February 3, 2011 from 6 to 9 PM. 210 AR4T Space is located at 210 North Coast Hwy, Laguna Beach, California.

by The Editors on January 14, 2011

Phonography1

On Monday, January 17, 2011 a group gallery collection of photos shot on cellphones and titled phonography opens at The Blind Lady Ale House in San Diego, California. The show features the photography of legendary skateboard photographers, skaters, musician, and artists including Grant Brittain, Miki Vuckovich, Dave Swift, Lance Mountain, Otis B., Mark Hoppus and Ed Templeton just to name a few.

“Phonography” looks at this phenomenon in a new way – with a fascinating exhibit of photos shot on nothing but phone cameras. In a greater sense, it’s an expression of modern aesthetics, and a journey through the highly personal interests of designers, photographers, musicians, skaters and creative people alike.

Chad Muska Art-20-492X277

Chad Muska opened his “private studio in New York” on January 8, 2011 and gave the world a peek at what he’s been working on lately in a show titled One Year In NYC, according to a post on the Kr3w.com site. While his influences could be up for discussion, the show seriously looks good.

The exhibit featured mixed media pieces ranging from prints, paintings, spray art, epoxy, ink on paper, photographs, video and jewelry all created in New York City over the past year, including a piece dedicated to professional skateboarder and long time friend Harold Hunter.

It also appears that Mr. Muska will be bringing the show to LA soon. Click the link for more photos.

Drew Brophy’s Long Art Trip

by The Editors on January 4, 2011

Drew610-1

One of the more amazing aspects of “the industry” is how many different doors there are to get in. Artist Drew Brophy is a classic example. As he tells Surf Expo’s Sean O’Brien, sometimes it’s just a matter of sticking around and doing your thing no matter what everyone else has to say about it.

I was trying to find someone who would let me use paint pens on surfboard for years. Kelly Richards from Perfection Surfboards let me do some, but he hated them. He was like: “Drew, these are the ugliest surfboards I’ve ever seen!” Then when I was in Hawaii I rode for Town & Country and I showed Craig Sugihara and the rest of the crew there my ideas and they weren’t into either. I got the same feedback from the guys at Local Motion and it seemed like everyone else on the North Shore. I was blown away, I was like “Wow, nobody’s going to let me do this.” . . . Matt [Biolos] was actually the last guy I wanted to talk to. He really had nothing going on at the time. They weren’t even on the map. But I needed an outlet to do the art and I wanted to meet him. That day I walked in there I was more or less looking to do something fun. I was making more money working at Stewart than I had in my whole life. Working with Matt was more of a release; it was just fun.

And to think, now Brophy is designing shirts for tradeshows. . . Click the link for the rest of the story.

I chose images for this exhibit that represented those special ‘ah-ha’ moments in my photo career. I hope that you will come by and check out the prints in person and have some great coffee and treats at the White Rabbit Bakery (closed Mondays).

White Rabbit Bakery is located at 21368 Hwy 99e, Aurora OR, 97002. Photos from the show are also posted on Fawcett’s AbsolutelyRadical.com website. And yes, the show features the classic photo of Jeff Brushie ending the all-around snowboarder era with a method on the 1990 June Mountain OP Pro GS course.

Techno TRONic Legacy Skateboarding

by The Editors on December 19, 2010

At the Tron Legacy premiere at the Melbourne Museum IMAX ENESS lit up a mini-ramp with a little TRON flavor and it looked good. Here’s how ENESS did it.

Each rider is equipped with an ipod and our custom-built app to measure their air time and trigger graphics whilst in the air and on landing.

There really is an app for everything.

Haleiwa’s Iconic Artist Ron Artis Dies

by The Editors on December 10, 2010

Ron Artis

Haleiwa, Hawaii artist and musician Ron Artis died Wednesday, December 8, 2010 of an apparent heart attack leaving a large hole in the vibrant life of Haleiwa town. He was 61.

His colorful gallery/studio a.k.a. Resurrection City was one one of the brightest spots on Haleiwa’s main drag. Literally covered in reclaimed and painted broken surfboards and music playing seemingly 24-7, the place was obviously the work of man committed to his gifts. The entire North Shore was his canvas, according to the Honolulu Star Advertiser.

Artis. . .created 900 murals in the community and resurrected discarded surfboards to adorn his Haleiwa gallery. . . The Texas-born painter and musician . . . participated in a 2008 police-backed beautification project to cover graffiti in Wahiawa, painting 25 murals around the town.

One of his last musical projects were two songs written in memory of Andy Irons. His family has said on their website: “”Our Father Ron Artis is now watching us from Heaven he lived a full life and put everything into us and we will not disappoint him.”

Artis is survived by his wife and 11 children. Our thoughts are will the family.

Mammoth Arts Up A Snow Park

by The Editors on December 9, 2010

Ap-Press-ImageThe last thing we need while stumbling though one of our favorite snowboard parks is more distractions. Apparently, Mammoth, AR4T and the JLA Project aren’t building their new Round Robin Art Park for us.

“Snowboarding has always been about creativity – finding your own line. Art is the exact same. That’s why cultures like snowboarding, skateboarding and art have always gone hand in hand. The great part about the Art Park is that there are no rules; we can get as creative as we like. The artists can go nuts, Dustin – the person who makes the rails come to life and who is an amazing artist himself – can push the limits, and hopefully the folks who come through the park will have fun and go home inspired, feeling a part of the whole experience” said Torrey Cook, AR4T’s curator.

Torrey may be right. It could be quite inspiring to see something beautiful moments before folding into a face whip halfway through an up/flat/down. For the rest of the details, follow the jump.
