Aaron Checkwood’s Oceanside Book

by The Editors on June 25, 2012

Flyer Sm-1Transworld Surf photo editor Aaron Checkwood has a new photo book coming out titled My Oceanside. And to kick it off the California Surf Museum is hosting a reception on Friday, June 29, 2012 and an exhibition that runs through September 4, 2012.

Focusing on a collection of photos showcasing life in Oceanside, Aaron deems this a tribute to a city whose people and landscapes are as diverse as the cultures that make it special. “The exhibit is just a snippet of the daily life of a vibrant, eclectic area that stands as the last bastion between San Diego County and the rest of the world,” said Aaron. . . The My Oceanside exhibit will run through September 4 with proceeds from the opening party to benefit the California Surf Museum. The event is proudly sponsored by Oceanside businesses Brixton, Raen, Chemistry Surfboards and TransWorld SURF magazine.

Good guy, great photos, and nice reason to visit the California Surf Museum and get a book signed. The party starts at 7 PM. The museum is located at 312 Pier View Way Oceanside, California. Follow the jump for more info. [click to continue…]

Laguna Beach, California’s AR4T is kicking off Robert “Sticky” Shaw’s first solo art exhibition Love Kills this Saturday night (June 2, 2012).

“Love Kills” is a window into the past, present and future. The story starts in a time when Sticky was an adolescent and he suffered from a disorder called “Cutting” The “Cutting” came about from the loss of a dear family friend who took his own life. Sticky also at this time was a heavy drinker and was experimenting with prescription drugs and marijuana. He fell in love with Punk music and as tradition has it, he fell madly in love with a girl. They dated for a short period, and as a young adult it seemed like years. Then one day she moved to New York to follow her dreams and was gone. Suffering her loss, in his room – a comfort zone surrounded with images of punk rock heroes – Sticky cut himself to release his anger and frustration.

The opening reception starts at 6 PM on June 2, 2012. AR4T is located at 210 North Pacific Coast Highway, Laguna Beach, California. [click to continue…]

Art Brewer Show At School of Visual Arts

by The Editors on May 4, 2012

Brewer1The School of Visual Arts in New York City is presenting a showing of Art Brewer’s photos in a showing titled Art Brewer: Surf Evolution.

Often described as “the court painter” for the world’s surfing elite, Art Brewer is known for his mastery of the numerous technical and physical challenges involved in surf photography and the strikingly expressive quality of his images, which some have described as “portals to a vastly improved universe.” Filmmaker C.R. Stecyk (Dogtown and Z-Boys) explains in his essay accompanying the exhibition, “Art has thoroughly examined the sport of surf riding with an unparalleled sensitive ferocity…an underlying introspection is seamlessly incorporated into his works via a technical mastery which comes across as easy and elegant.”

The show runs June 8 – 20, 2012 with an opening reception on June 14, 2012 at 6 PM. Follow the jump for the official word or click to read the same thing on Surfline.com. [click to continue…]
