Florida Surfer Steps On A Shark

by The Editors on June 17, 2013

St. Augustin Beach, Florida surfer Andrew Birchall, 37, is recovering from two shark bites to his foot after jumping off his board and stepping on a shark, according to a story in Action News Jax.

“When he got off the board, he apparently stepped on the shark in about waist deep water. The shark bit him we think twice. We think he bit him once, then kind of pulled his foot out of the shark’s mouth, then he got another bite on his toes,” mother Nancy Birchall said. . . She said her son has been surfing the St. Augustine Beach area for years, and never had a problem.

After a trip to the hospital and surgery to remove a shark tooth from his foot, Birchall is doing well. Seems it’s hard to step off your board in Florida without stepping on a shark.

Shark Bites Florida Surfer’s Hand

by The Editors on September 6, 2012

While it may like nearly all Florida surfers eventually get bitten by a shark, that is not the case, however, on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, a 32-year-old surfer was hit while riding waves in Melbourne Beach, according to a story in the Miami Herald.

The surfer told authorities he was paddling out from shore at Melbourne Beach when he placed his hand in the water and felt a bite. . . His hand was treated by paramedics at the beach, and he didn’t need to be taken to a hospital.

While half of the “unprovoked shark attacks” in the US in 2012 have happened in Florida, this was reportedly only the third shark attack in Brevard County this year.

Shark Hits Another Florida Surfer

by The Editors on March 15, 2012

A man surfing Florida’s Jensen Public Beach was hit multiple times in his left arm by a five to six-foot-long shark today, according to a story in the Palm Beach Post.

The man suffered multiple bites to his left arm, but crews were able to control his bleeding and none of his injuries appear to be life-threatening. The man refused medical transport and was taken to a local hospital by his wife, Fire Rescue Bureau Chief Daniel Harshburger said.

That’s three shark attacks in two days. Apparently it’s shark migration time in Florida or something.

Florida’s 100,000 Shark Migration

by The Editors on February 3, 2011

Article-1352758-0D01E08E000005Dc-167 468X570The Daily Mail headline was a little hard to miss: “100,000 sharks mass off Florida’s beaches.” And so far no one has been bitten. Not even in Volusia Country, the shark-bite capital of the world.

Pilot Steve Irwin [no relation] was astonished after spotting a mass of more than 100,000 sharks swimming just 100 yards off Florida’s sandy beaches.. . . The sharks – believed to be Spinners, between 3ft and 7ft long – were heading north and swimming parallel to the east coast’s idyllic white beaches between Fort Lauderdale and exclusive Jupiter Island.

As if Florida surfers didn’t have it hard enough already. . .[Editors’ note: We think that’s the fourth or fifth time we’ve said that.]
