Mark “Monk” Hubbard<\/strong>, the mind and muscle behind Grindline Skateparks<\/strong><\/a> and the DIY skatepark movement in general died June 8, 2018 at his home in West Seattle, according to a story on Fox Q 13<\/strong>. His cause of death has not be announced. Hubbard was 47 years old.<\/p>\n

For skateboarders across the world, Hubbard was a significant figure. In the early 90\u2019s, he helped build Portland\u2019s Burnside Skatepark, seen by many as the model for modern parks. \u201cThis guy invented DIY (Do it Yourself).\u201d Thrasher Magazine<\/strong><\/em><\/a> Editor-in-Chief Jake Phelps<\/strong> said. \u201cYou see kids out there digging ditches for skateboarding, it\u2019s because of Marty.\u201d . . .Hubbard transformed his love of DIY skateboarding into a business. He and his Grindline crews built parks from Orcas Island to Israel with a passion that transcended a mere job.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hubbard is survived by his wife Jenny<\/strong> and three children Kaya<\/strong>, Leona<\/strong>, and Odin<\/strong>. Our thoughts are with them all. Mark \u201cMonk\u201d Hubbard died yesterday. Mark was a loving, compassionate and extraordinary man, father, husband, artist, dreamer, skater, musician and spirit.
