But we thought it would be good to at least mention who won: <strong>Kelly Slater <\/strong>took his 17th title and<strong> Carissa Moore<\/strong> took her first.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe first one I won was in 1992,\u201d says Kelly Slater. \u201cI remember the cover shot was me, and it said Curren, Carroll, Potts\u2019 names too. That was pretty mind-blowing at the time to win against those guys. Now I\u2019m still inspired by the crew of guys coming up right now\u2014Dane, Julian, Medina, John John.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Current ASP women&#8217;s champ Carissa Moore seemed the most surprised:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m still grasping the situation,\u201d said a visibly shocked Carissa Moore, \u201cbut it\u2019s amazing to win this award. It\u2019s a great night in surfing and I\u2019m so thankful for all my fans for voting for me.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For all the other award winners and video awards (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.surfermag.com\/surfer-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a><\/strong>) or follow the jump.<!--more-->SURFER POLL HONORS THE BIGGEST NAMES IN SURFING<\/p>\n<p>Slater, Moore, and Year Zero Take Top Honors<\/p>\n<p>TURTLE BAY, Oahu, Hawaii (December 7, 2011) \u2014 Kelly Slater, Carissa Moore, and Year Zero took home top honors last night at the 41st annual SURFER Poll Awards presented by Samsung and Verizon Wireless. For the second year running, Turtle Bay on the North Shore of Oahu played host to the biggest night in surfing, where SURFER magazine honored the Top 10 men and Top 5 women\u2014as voted by fans\u2014as well as Movie of the Year, Best Barrel, Heavy Water, and other top videos and performances of 2011.<\/p>\n<p>In the Men\u2019s category, Kelly Slater took home his 17th SURFER Poll No. 1 this year, despite the 11-time World Champ\u2019s 2010 acceptance speech that urged surfers to vote for Dane Reynolds this year. Following Kelly was Dane Reynolds, Owen Wright, Julian Wilson, Taj Burrow, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Jordy Smith, Andy Irons, and Bruce Irons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first one I won was in 1992,\u201d says Kelly Slater. \u201cI remember the cover shot was me, and it said Curren, Carroll, Potts\u2019 names too. Now I\u2019m still inspired by the crew of guys coming up right now\u2014Dane, Julian, Medina, John John.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the Women\u2019s side of the Poll, recently crowned ASP World Champ Carissa Moore ousted two-time SURFERPoll No. 1 Stephanie Gilmore to take the top slot on the Poll. Rounding out the rest of the top five was Coco Ho, Steph Gilmore, Alana Blanchard, and SallyFitzgibbons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still grasping the situation,\u201d said a visibly shocked Carissa Moore, \u201cbut it\u2019s amazing to win this award. It\u2019s a great night in surfing and I\u2019m so thankful for all my fans for voting for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the Video Awards portion of the evening, <strong>Globe\u2019s <\/strong><strong><em>Year Zero<\/em><\/strong> directed by Joe Guglielmino took home the Movie of the Year distinction, beating out this year\u2019s best surf films, including Lost Atlas, Kerrazy Kronicles, Get-N-Classic, and Come Hell or High Water.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the video awards, this year we were honored to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to SURFER Founder John Severson. Severson\u2019s vision and approach\u2014highlighting the beauty of surfing and the lighter side of our culture\u2014became the guiding light for surf media in the more than half century since he launched the first-ever surf magazine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the beginning there was nothing,\u201d Severson said, \u201cand today it\u2019s just amazing\u2014the surfers are so good now, it\u2019s great. I wonder where we can go from here. I\u2019m almost surprised that we can continue to evolve.
