{"id":1588,"date":"2008-09-04T15:28:26","date_gmt":"2008-09-04T22:28:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.boardistan.com\/?p=1588"},"modified":"2011-05-21T08:07:06","modified_gmt":"2011-05-21T15:07:06","slug":"its-a-war-on-media-the-panel-discussion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.boardistan.com\/?p=1588","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s A War On Media: The Panel Discussion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boardistan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/mediapanel.jpg\" onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/www.boardistan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/mediapanel.jpg','popup','width=1000,height=750,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=yes,left=0,top=0');return false\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.boardistan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/mediapanel-tm.jpg\" height=\"150\" width=\"200\" border=\"1\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" alt=\"Mediapanel\" \/><\/a>We came in ready to have a little laugh at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fuel.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fuel TV<\/a><\/strong><strong>&#8216;<\/strong>s expense about having a media panel with no media people on it, but Fuel&#8217;s <strong>John Stouffer<\/strong> surprised us.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, Fuel TV&#8217;s General Manager <strong>CJ Olivares<\/strong> was on the panel (as he is every year), but also upfront were several <em>other<\/em> action sports media people: <strong>TransWorld Business<\/strong> Publisher <strong>Rob Campbell<\/strong>, <strong>The Surfer Group<\/strong> Publisher <strong>Rick Irons<\/strong>, and <strong>Vans<\/strong> marketing guy <strong>Doug Palladini<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The stated point of the discussion was how the Internet is changing action sports media. With the exception of <strong>Palladini<\/strong>, however, all the panelists were from old media companies who happen to have websites. No one from any of the emerging online action sports media businesses like <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.loopd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">loopd<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/seshn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Seshn<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportnet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sportnet<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.go211.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Go211<\/a><\/strong>, or <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bnqt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bnqt<\/a><\/strong> were even represented on the panel. Add to the fact that Vans spends millions of dollars with the other three panelists and it ended up like little more than a one-sided scuffle about advertising.<\/p>\n<p>One of most pointed comments came from the audience when <strong>Ransu Salovaara<\/strong> the CEO of online ad network <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sportsyndicator.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sportsyndicator.com<\/a><\/strong> said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The readers have already abondonded the magazines. The people are already online but the industry is supporting the magazines. The marketing directors are about two years behind the rest of the world. . . .
