{"id":10967,"date":"2009-10-01T09:56:46","date_gmt":"2009-10-01T16:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.boardistan.com\/?p=10967"},"modified":"2009-10-01T10:37:25","modified_gmt":"2009-10-01T17:37:25","slug":"samoas-surf-resorts-destroyed-by-tsunami","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.boardistan.com\/?p=10967","title":{"rendered":"Samoa&#8217;s Surf Resorts Destroyed By Tsunami"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boardistan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/salani.jpg\" onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/www.boardistan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/salani.jpg','popup','width=728,height=365,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=yes,left=0,top=0');return false\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.boardistan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/salani-tm.jpg\" height=\"215\" width=\"430\" border=\"1\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" alt=\"Salani\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When the 8.0 earthquake hit just south of the islands of Samoa on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 06:48:10 the quick thinking staff at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.surfsamoa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Salani Surf Resort<\/a><\/strong> evacuated all their guests to higher ground immediately, but the entire resort was washed away by the tsunami, according to a story on <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goldcoast.com.au\/article\/2009\/10\/01\/143041_gold-coast-news.html\" target=\"_blank\">Goldcoast.com.au<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;They didn&#8217;t get any warning before it hit but our resort managers said they felt the earthquake really badly and then they noticed the water level lowered to the point where reef coral was showing, which isn&#8217;t normal,&#8221; resort owner <strong>Shannon Donato<\/strong> said. . . &#8220;They didn&#8217;t take any chances and evacuated everyone, including getting them to tell the village to evacuate. . . &#8220;They saved a lot of people from being hurt.&#8221; . . All eight bungalows, a restaurant, bar, staff accommodation, two surf boats and volleyball courts were washed away by the tsunami and looters stole from the only building left standing &#8212; the manager&#8217;s bungalow.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Donato said the staff was &#8220;very shaken,&#8221; but she is glad everyone is okay.<\/p>\n<p>That was not the case at neighboring Samoa surf resort  <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coconutsbeachclubsamoa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Coconuts Beach Resort<\/a><\/strong>, according to a story on <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.etravelblackboard.com\/showarticle.asp?id=97717&amp;nav=130\" target=\"_blank\">etravelblackboard.com<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>. . . Sinalei Reef Resort and Coconuts Beach Resort have both sustained considerable damage to public areas as well as guest rooms and villas, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themercury.com.au\/article\/2009\/10\/02\/100751_tasmania-news.html\" target=\"_blank\">while one Tasmanian death was a guest at Coconuts<\/a><\/strong>. . . We would also like to send our deepest condolences to the Annandale family who own and operate Sinalei Reef Resort.
