We didn’t watch much of the 2016 Volcom Pipe Pro held January 27 – February 2, 2016, but we were lucky enough to catch the most stacked finals we think we’ve ever seen at Pipeline yesterday (February 2, 2016): Kelly Slater, JOB, Bruce Irons, and Makai McNamara.
At first we were wondering why 2 John Florence wasn’t in the mix, too, but Makai’s first wave (and his complete commitment to the task) made us realize we could get by without Mr. Blue Moon in a Pipeline final. Oh, and Kelly Slater’s surfing was pretty near perfect, which is always good to see.

Kering, Volcom’s Paris, France based owner, has apparently decided they need someone from the home office in charge. So they’ve moved out longtime CEO Jason Steris and consolidated Volcom’s (and Electric’s) leadership under Kering’s chief executive of the Action Sports Brands Todd Hymel (right), according to a story in Orange County Business.
Hymel, a 41-year-old U.S.-French national, moved to Orange County in May to take on “a more active role in the development, expansion and performance of the Volcom and Electric brands worldwide.” He joined Kering in 2008 as deputy director of mergers and acquisitions and was appointed chief operating officer of its Sport and Lifestyle Division in 2012.
See, the new owners always move their people in eventually. Seems Kering was just a little more polite about it, waiting a full four and a half years before officially putting the company under the control of someone fluent in French.
Even in these jaded days of surf industry despair there are few things radder than a Volcom world movie premiere in the heart of SoCal surf ghetto. So, pull yourself together and head over to the Big Newport 6 on Thursday, September 17, 2015. There you can watch Psychic Migrations live and free.
The show starts at 7 PM, but we’re guessing you’ll need to arrive earlier than that if you expect to get a seat.
The Big Newport 6 is located at 300 Newport Center Dr. in Newport Beach, California. For more info follow the jump.

We just checked out Volcom and Baker’s new “Match Made in the Gutter” collection in person and you know what? It’s done up nice. The line includes two T-shirts, a button-up, belt, twill pants and a lounging shoe with pom pom toes. Huh?
The designers at Volcom and Baker worked with mutual team rider, Dustin Dollin, to come up with a progressive and eye-popping line that represents both Volcom and Baker’s unique perspective on design and skateboarding. . . Dollin was the perfect choice to help curate this collection as he is known for leading a fearless approach to skating, off board antics and fashion.
And it works. This collab is gonna be like Lego x Star Wars for skateboarders. It’s on sale now at Volcom.com and hits stores in March. For the official word from VeeCo, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
Volcom has produced a collab shoe with street artist Skullphone. Only 400 pairs are being made. They cost $85 and are available at select retailers and in Volcom’s online store. If you’re into Skullphone you’ll probably like these.
Kevin Meehan, the former general manager at Burton’s clothing and footwear companies Analog and Gravis has been named to the brand new position of President North American Region at Volcom, according to a story on Apparelnews.net.
In a comment from Volcom Chief Executive Officer Jason Steris, Meehan is a “cross-functional operations professional,” with 19 years experience in action sports, where he has worked in strategic planning, organizational development, marketing and sales strategy and business development.” Adding Kevin to the team provides even more firepower to drive the brand, Steris said in a company statement.
It’s nice to see that Volcom is still making good decisions even when they’re under pressure from their French overlords at Kering.
It’s official. Try and run a Cinch Fly on your shorts without permission from Volcom and you’re going to be breaking the law.
“The Cinch Fly was created to eliminate the bulkiness and maximize comfort,” says Joe Frizzelle, senior men’s board short designer. “Through the strategic design on the fly, we were able to discard the zipper without adding an inner gusset/extra fabric.. This dramatically reduced the amount of fabric & construction on the front of the garment which in turn makes the board short more comfortable in the water.”
That’s fashion with a function right there. That’s what that is.
In the never ending battle to look core, Volcom has announced some “exclusive” shoes with both Tilly’s and Zumiez. You know, to make the retail outlets feel good about Volcom’s other larger retail channels. Apparently, the Grim Mid is exclusively available at Tillys.com and the Grim Black & Charcoal Suede Shoe is available only at Zumiez. We can’t really tell the shoes apart, but apparently Volcom is expecting shoppers to make the pilgrimage to one store or the other to get the model they want. What? It could happen. We can’t all wear Vans or Nikes.
