by The Editors on December 19, 2017

Just a little reminder that while we in the Northern Hemisphere may be freezing our wee bits off, in the Southern Hemisphere it’s summer. . . or something like that.

Billabong Looking To Buy Rip Curl

by The Editors on October 30, 2017

Maybe someone who understands how business works can explain why Billabong, the company that ran itself onto the rocks after paying way to much for way too many smaller companies would now, after beginning to claw their way back to open ocean, look at picking up Rip Curl, and an online retailer (Surfstitch) which they have already bought and sold once, according to a story in The Australian.

Anyone have any theories? Increased sales? Independent online retail looking up? Eliminate a competitor? Give money to their friends and former business associates?

Surfers Suing Rip Curl After Nightmare Trip

by The Editors on May 9, 2017

Five Orange County, California and three Austrailian surfers are suing Rip Curl after the 8 were allegedly left to fend for themselves after the charter surf boat they were on (the Quest 1, formerly known as the Indies Trader II) began sinking during the night of July 18, 2015, according to a story in the Orange County Register.

The eight men are now suing surf giant Rip Curl, which organized the excursion, alleging the company knew the vessel was in disrepair and failed to provide any aid or assistance after they were rescued. The lawsuit, filed last month, also names Rip Curl executives and the boat’s operators, PT Neptune Adventures, which is described in the suit as a “shell” company set up by Rip Curl to “avoid liability and circumvent regulatory compliance” for the Quest 1.

Click the link for the rest of this nightmare surf story. From the sounds of the complaint, the surfers are lucky to be alive.

Rip Curl’s Slave Labor Outerwear

by The Editors on February 23, 2016

ripcurl_nk

According to a story in the Sydney Morning Herald, Rip Curl made at least some of their 2015 snowboard outerwear in North Korea, a country known for using slave labor in manufacturing. Of course Rip Curl didn’t mention it until after it was pointed out to them by Fairfax Media. Now the surf wear company is doing everything they can to blame it on their China based contractors.

After Fairfax Media sent Rip Curl photos of its garments being made in North Korea, the company’s chief financial officer Tony Roberts released a statement that said the firm “takes its social compliance obligations seriously. . .We were aware of this issue, which related to our Winter 2015 Mountain-wear range, but only became aware of it after the production was complete and had been shipped to our retail customers. . . This was a case of a supplier diverting part of their production order to an unauthorised subcontractor, with the production done from an unauthorised factory, in an unauthorised country, without our knowledge or consent, in clear breach of our supplier terms and policies.”

Hey, you can’t keep those margins in check without cutting production costs, right? In other news, Kim Jong-un may be getting the boot from his own country for a failing economy.

Rip Curl’s Search Revel Teasers

by The Editors on September 14, 2015

Not sure if it’s just the heatwave we’ve been going through lately, or what, but this little clip cooled us off quite nicely, even if there are one or two skiers in this clip. Why? Rip Curl, why?

Mick The Machine Wins Rip Curl Pro

by The Editors on October 20, 2014

With his win over Jordy Smith in the 2014 Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal on Monday, October 20, 2014, Mick Fanning has moved right into the number two spot behind Gabriel Medina in the ASP World Rankings. As we all know, Mick is not someone to mess with at Pipeline. He is a ruthless and constant competitor. Let’s just say he was very happy with his win.

“I am just so stoked,” said Fanning. “I didn’t really think about a win to tell you the truth, it just happened. Jordy (Smith) surfed amazing, John John (Florence) surfed amazing, Kai (Otton) too. Everyone has been ripping this whole Euro leg and I’m just stoked I got to get a result out of it. It feels so good to get a win, it’s been five years since I won here, so I am very stoked. Going into Hawaii with a title on the line is so stressful, but I guess I will just deal with that when I get there. For now I’ll just enjoy the win here.”

by The Editors on October 20, 2014

Finally, a surf watch that actually does something. If the Rip Curl Search GPS watch works as well as this edit suggests, this could be the best surf watch ever (even if it is a little bulky). We’re hoping to get a review unit in the near future. We’ll let you know.

Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal Kicks Off

by The Editors on October 14, 2014

Medina Port 14

While we were sleeping last night those jet setting WCT surfers kicked off Round 1 of the Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal at Supertubos. From the looks of it, Gabriel Medina is well on his way to wrapping up this season before the tour gets to Hawaii and it has the King upping his game.

“It’s always tough in conditions like this and even more so when a guy starts out with almost a 10-point score,” said Kelly Slater. “I just wanted to get myself going, get some waves and start feeling the flow. Gabriel (Medina) is a real competitor. He wants to win the Title more than anyone, and at his age I was the same exact way. You can see that he loves to surf, he loves to get better and improve what he is already doing and he’s got crazy skills.”

Fanning, Moore Win Rip Curl Pro Bells

by The Editors on April 23, 2014

Good on ’em, hey? Both Carissa Moore and Mick Fanning were over the moon with wins in the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach and Tyler Wright and Taj Burrow added another second place finish to their surfing resumes.

Fanning said:

“After that result (13th) in Margaret River I went home and worked really hard and I’m so pleased that the hard work paid off. Congratulations to Taj (Burrow), I’ve never been so nervous for nine minutes of my life, he surfed amazingly,” said Mick Fanning. “We got to surf everywhere at this event which was awesome, we got to surf the Bowl, Rincon and to finish at Winkipop. It’s always been my dream to surf a Heat at Winkipop. This is such a special event for me and I feel comfortable here. With the calibre of surfers on Tour at the moment there’s never an easy Heat and it keeps it so exciting.”

Moore said (after claiming to be “speechless”:

“That was an amazing Final,” Moore said. “We were having such a blast, I just wanted to talk to Tyler (Wright) because the waves were so fun and it felt like we were having a fun free surf. I know she’s such an amazing surfer and will be in ASP World Title contention at the end of the year, so I knew I had to be at my best. It’s been a long Australian leg with three events in a row and it couldn’t have been much better for me, two wins and a quarterfinal and to finish by winning at Bells is so unique and special.”
