The Now Monthly List of News Stories

by The Editors on September 14, 2020

Yesterday (September 13, 2020) marked the six month anniversary of the current now. Hard to believe we have been mired in this situation for half of 2020. On the one hand we’re blown away by all the calamity that we’ve been faced with, on the other, we’re thankful for all those oblivious deniers who keep on keeping on like there’s nothing wrong. Kudos to them for showing us that it is entirely possible to live a normal (albeit angry) life with your head firmly mired in the sand and/or up your own butt.

With that out of the way, here’s the news that caught our clicker in the past month (thought we were doing this weekly, but my how time flies). Follow the jump for the whole list.

News: Last Month This Week

by The Editors on November 14, 2019

Call it a beacon of laziness, or a blinding neon sign of boredom, but we’re still at it. Putting up a list of headlines for stories we might have read over the past who knows how many days.

It takes us back to when we were just starting out. Each week we built an HTML page of links with a bit of commentary. Then the commentary took over, and now, it looks like we’re back to just blasting out an occasional list of links for you to chew through all by your lonesome. Just the ebbs and flows of action sporting news dissemination. Enjoy.

Bezos Accuses Pecker Of Dick Pic Blackmail

by The Editors on February 7, 2019

In a story posted on Medium today (February 7, 2019), Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos claims that Surfer Magazine, Transworld Snowboarding, and Transworld Skateboarding’s new parent company American Media (through its tabloid The National Enquirer) has threatened to publish photos of Mr. Bezos’ penis “as well as nine other images” if Mr. Bezos didn’t call the Washington Post off its investigation of American Media CEO David Pecker’s relationship with Donald Trump, according to a story on the Huffington Post.

Here’s a little of what Mr. Bezos is claiming:

I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse. Or at least that’s what the top people at the National Enquirer thought. I’m glad they thought that, because it emboldened them to put it all in writing. Rather than capitulate to extortion and blackmail, I’ve decided to publish exactly what they sent me, despite the personal cost and embarrassment they threaten. . . They said they had more of my text messages and photos that they would publish if we didn’t stop our investigation.

Usually these stories that have nothing to do with skateboarding, snowboarding, or surfing would be well outside our “lane.” But last week’s sale brings it all home to our world. Think about it? This suggests that those left at what once was TEN are now in a not-so-roundabout way working for the Trump Administration, forcing action sports marketing people to ask themselves, “Do we really want to support Donald Trump by spending advertising and marketing dollars with American Media in light of all this?”

We can say this: if this is how American Media does business, then the people who had their jobs eliminated last week are the lucky ones.

Shark Hits Oregon Surfer

by The Editors on October 12, 2016

A 29-year-old surfer was hit by a shark while surfing Indian Beach at Ecola State Park on the Oregon coast on Monday, October 10, 2016, according to story on Fox News.

The animal bit 29-year-old Joseph Tanner on his upper and lower thigh, investigators said. Tanner had been surfing along Indian Beach at Ecola State Park at around 4 p.m. when the attack unfolded. . . He told emergency personnel that the shark was “medium-big” and thought it could’ve been a great white shark but said he wasn’t sure, according to KGW-TV. The shark pulled him off of his surfboard and he swam to shore, police said.

Tanner, who works as a trauma nurse, was able to direct his own first aid with the help of others on the scene. He was stabilized and then flown to a Portland hospital with what were described as serious injuries.

Final Four Decided In Fiji Pro

by The Editors on June 5, 2014

And just like that the ASP World Championship Tour’s Fiji Pro is down to four guys after yesterday’s (June 4, 2014) rounds of surfing: Nat Young vs. Michel Bourez, and Gabriel Medina (above) vs. Kolohe Andino. We don’t want to say anything too derogatory about the waves, but the semi-finalists themselves are a pretty good indicator of how it went for most of the contest. The semi-finalists didn’t seem to let that get them down.

“Today was for sure the best I’ve ever surfed since I’ve been on Tour,” said Kolohe Andino. “I felt really calm which is good for me and I’m stoked. I’m still improving and my board change has really helped. I’m just taking it heat by heat and really enjoying myself out there so we’ll see what happens. I’m stoked that Nat (Young) is still in the draw because he’s my best friend on Tour.”

The contest just might conclude today with what we’re guessing will be a Bourez, Medina final with Medina taking the win. Then again, we could be wrong. For the official word from the ASP including complete results, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
