Flipping Off Billabong & Element

by The Editors on October 9, 2010

Notforsale-650Final

A subtle yet effective response from Flip Skateboards regarding Mark Appleyard’s move to Element. . . we assume.

Ironically, it appears that both Geoff Rowley and David Gonzalez forgot (at least for a moment) that they are both sponsored by the same publicly traded clothing company (Volcom) that Apples rides for? Maybe that’s why this post is no longer on the Flip site. Or maybe it was all one big joke.

Mike Vallely Explains His Element Exit

by The Editors on July 15, 2010

Laybackgrind

On Wednesday (July 14, 2010), when news began arriving that Mike Vallely was leaving Element Skateboards (and becoming one of the few objects to escape Billabong’s gravitational pull in recent weeks) we were too caught up in agreeing with Boil The Ocean’s take on the new company to get the official word from the man himself. And what a disservice that was. Here’s what Mike said on his blog:

You see, I still love Element and the people who I worked closely with there but unfortunately those people are ultimately powerless to steer the ship that is the conglomerate that owns Element. And it has become clearer and clearer to me that the parent company of Element is only looking to build their business and improve their bottom line on the backs of people like me. They can buy admiration but they can’t buy achievement. They can own skateboard companies but they’ll never be skaters. And this really bothers me. It bothers me so much that I can no longer give one ounce of my energy or another second of my time to their cause. Thus, I’ve started my own thing because I simply can’t and won’t be apart of their thing anymore.”

No one ever questioned Mike Vallely’s commitment, nor his ability to march directly into battle. We just hope he can live By the Sword, and not the other way around.

Plan Billabong Skateboards

by The Editors on March 5, 2010

Branch LogoToday Element’s Johnny Schillereff announced that Billabong has reeled Plan B Skateboards into an “exclusive 10-year agreement” and that Plan B will be operating out of the Element headquarters in Irvine, California.

“The Billabong group’s unwavering support has helped Element blaze the trails we’ve always dreamed of,” Schillereff said. “Plan B is iconic and deep within the fabric of skateboarding and we couldn’t be happier to unite with them.”

Colin McKay agrees.

“Billabong and Element clearly understand brand building,” he said. “Danny, the team and I couldn’t be happier with the opportunity to leverage their strengths and help Plan B reach its full potential.”

Billabong knows better than most that skateboard hardgoods are a great loss leader for selling logo T’s, denim, and even shoes. Plus, we’re sure it’s going to help add a little more diversity to the Billabong mall stores that have been popping up here and there lately. Chalk up another win for Paul Naude.

This night will be about sharing stories, creating new ideas and saying thank you.”
