Of Course Ratboy Is The Wildcard

by The Editors on October 26, 2012

Jason Collins 26 Prefontaine

Today O’Neill announced that it awarded one of its two 2012 Cold Water Classic wildcard spots to Jason “Ratboy” Collins. Did anyone doubt that?

“I’m super excited to get the wildcard. I knew there were a few people up for it,” said Collins. “It’s pretty cool for a local to get the opportunity to go out and surf against talent like Slater and Parko, guys you’ve looked up to. It’s also cool to see the event get upgraded, like it used to be. We used to get guys like Martin Potter, Tom Curren, everybody would come up here. But it’s been quite a few years.”

The other wildcard will be awarded in a 12-man invitation surf contest on October 31, 2012 featuring Nat Young, Bud Freitas, Noi Kaulukukui, Adam Replogle, Josh Mulcoy, Randy Bonds, Shaun Burns, Josh Loya and Jimmy Herrick, as well as, Johny Craft, Cory Lopez and Tim Reyes. The 2012 O’Neill Coldwater Classic waiting period begins November 1, 2012. Follow the jump for all the details. [click to continue…]

Nixon + Plan B = The Soundclash Project

by The Editors on October 15, 2012

Seeing as five of Plan B’s skaters also ride for Nixon, both crews thought it would be awesome to put their heads together. The result is The Soundclash Project.

The Soundclash Project is made up of new pro model boards representing Paul Rodriguez, Torey Pudwill, Ryan Sheckler, Danny Way and Colin McKay. Each board features pre-applied custom grip tape, corresponding custom wheels and a custom color update to Nixon’s TPS (mobile speaker). This collar is now available on nixon.com/soundclash and select skate shops worldwide in limited quantities and once they sell out, they are gone forever.

The Jewel Thief Wore DC Shoes Hat

by The Editors on September 28, 2012

DchatA gem thief in Montgomery Township, Pennsylvania hid out in a Costco until the place was closed and then made off with $91,000 in jewels, according to a story on 6abc.com. The only thing police have to go on is a DC Shoes hat.

Store cameras capture him wandering around the aisles dressed all in black and wearing a hat like with a logo from DC Shoes. . . When the coast is clear, he hides, though police aren’t publicly releasing where. . . “It’s an area where if someone was hiding there, an employee would not look in that particular area to see if anyone was still in there,” said Detective Bennis. . . . The suspect stays hidden for roughly three and a half hours as the store closes and employees do a final sweep to make sure customers are gone. . . Around midnight, 15 minutes after the last employee leaves, the man makes his move, grabbing a TV before he crashes it into jewelry cases in complete darkness.

Guess he has to pay for those drifting tires somehow.

DC Signs On For 2012 Street League

by The Editors on March 19, 2012

Unknown-1

DC Shoes is sponsoring Rob Dyrdek’s Street League Skateboarding series again. And why shouldn’t they, really. They’re in so deep with Dyrdek there would be no reason to stop now.

“There’s nothing better than Street League Skateboarding and we are really excited to sponsor the series again this year,” said DC President, Anton Nistl. “For DC it’s been a strategic and significant partnership over the years, and Street League really aligns with DC’s ‘vision’ of being the most sought after skate-driven action sports brand in the world.”

See, that’s how deep they are. Follow the jump for the official word (including tour dates). [click to continue…]

Mike Mo, Nyjah Huston On DC Shoes

by The Editors on January 3, 2012

The message boards have been packed with this news for months, but yesterday (January 2, 2012) DC Shoes officially announced that they had made two “massive additions” to their skate program with Mike Mo Capaldi (formerly of Lakai) and Nyjah Huston (footwear free agent).

As usual, this announcement was followed by a flurry of comments from industry insiders and skate kids who don’t believe the publicly traded Quiksilver has skateboarding’s best interest in mind when it signs up major players.

One long-time skate industry head said:

Again skateboarders have sold themselves to a corporate giant who doesn’t care about skateboarding, just money. Happy 4 the skaters, though.

Another fired back:

. . . as long as that company funds skateparks, pays skaters well, makes cool videos and puts on cool events I’m backin’ it.

The first replied:

I know. Getting harder to hate buying credibility. I know it’s not rational but stills feel weird. Happy for skaters though.

Before getting all emotionally involved just remember: skateboarding and skateboarders are just the little donkeys who help drag the footwear marketing machine to the masses.

DC Shoes Shutters Melrose Flagship Store

by The Editors on December 9, 2011

Seems like only yesterday (Spring 2008) that kids were lining up along LA’s Melrose Avenue to get their chance to meet the DC skateboarding team at the grand opening of DC Shoe’s LA Flagship store.

Apparently, those heady days of Melrose ego retailing are over for Quiksilver’s footwear brand. The phone has been disconnected, the store is no longer listed on the DC store locator, and according to a DC retail employee the flag has been down “about a month.” We must have missed that press release.
