Seems a winter off hasn’t slowed Nyjah Huston down one bit if the first stop of the 2012 Street League Skateboarding event in Kansas City is any judge. After blazing his way through the finals he rolled away with $150,000 for the win and another $10,000 for best trick. Here’s how he did it:
By posting consistently high scores and dropping big moves, like a bigspin to backside Hurricane on the bump-to-rail in the Best Trick section, he maintained a top two position throughout. In the final Big Section, with Monster teammate Chris Cole and Bastien Salabanzi nipping at his heels, Huston threw it into overdrive unleashing tricks on the rails like Cab backside lipslide, 360-flip lipslide, and then the one that sealed the deal and earned him Best Trick honors, the kickflip backside noseblunt slide.
This was Street League win number five for Huston and we’re betting there will be a few more on the season. For complete results, follow the jump.
The message boards have been packed with this news for months, but yesterday (January 2, 2012) DC Shoes officially announced that they had made two “massive additions” to their skate program with Mike Mo Capaldi (formerly of Lakai) and Nyjah Huston (footwear free agent).
As usual, this announcement was followed by a flurry of comments from industry insiders and skate kids who don’t believe the publicly traded Quiksilver has skateboarding’s best interest in mind when it signs up major players.
One long-time skate industry head said:
Again skateboarders have sold themselves to a corporate giant who doesn’t care about skateboarding, just money. Happy 4 the skaters, though.
Another fired back:
. . . as long as that company funds skateparks, pays skaters well, makes cool videos and puts on cool events I’m backin’ it.
The first replied:
I know. Getting harder to hate buying credibility. I know it’s not rational but stills feel weird. Happy for skaters though.
Before getting all emotionally involved just remember: skateboarding and skateboarders are just the little donkeys who help drag the footwear marketing machine to the masses.
Don’t think that the major leaguers don’t pay their dues every single day of the week. Here’s a little behind the scenes from Nyjah Huston’s 24 rail in Rise & Shine.
Looks like Walker Ryan isn’t the only one who’s into all those number 1s standing up tall and proud. On November 11, 2011 Element Skateboards and Nyjah Huston are releasing their short film Rise & Shine to the world on iTunes. Click here to watch a clip then on Friday you can download the whole thing.
Thrasher Magazine grabbed followed Nyjah Huston around the park for awhile and as they said, “Nyjah Huston filmed this Double Rock in about the same time it would take you to watch a shitty Adam Sandler movie.” We’re not surprised at all but it is crazy impressive all the same.
ESPN has been kind enough to post the entire Street League Glendale, Arizona stop for our viewing please. If you missed it on Sunday, it is well worth watching. Nyjah is unstoppable. Part 1 is above, click here for Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4.
It was pretty obvious during Street League Kansas City qualifiers that something big was going to have to happen is anyone wanted to take out Nyjah Huston during stop two of the 2011 Street League Tour. Chris Cole came pretty close. In fact, if it wasn’t for Nyjah’s last ditch Nollie Inward Heel Flip that $150,000 would have gone into Chris Cole’s wallet.
Nyjah Huston slipped past Shane O’Neil and Chaz Ortiz to win the first stop of the 2011 Street League DC Pro Tour in Seattle, Washington on Sunday, May 8, 2011, and take home $165,000 in prize money.
Perhaps the most memorable moment was on Huston’s last attempt, when he landed a backside 270 nose bluntslide on the big section rail for the highest scoring trick of Street League to-date and ending the event as the crowd roared. With that trick, Huston also took home the Monster Energy Best Trick Award worth another $15,000.
Once they put the sword in on the 11 set Nyjah Huston went to work with a big flip front board, a nollie heel nose slide, and then kept delivering at The Crossroads Best Trick contest on Thursday afternoon February 4, 2010. Chris Cole pulled out all the tricks including his weird flip up, run down the rail land back on the board stuff, but it was only enough for second. Nick Merlino got third.
Nyjah Huston has been charged with misdemeanor “creating a nuisance” by the Los Angeles Police Department for he and Fairfax home owner Edward Essa repeatedly hosting parties that were “possible super spreader events at the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic” according to a story in the LA Times.
Nyjah Huston, a four-time world skateboarding champion, and Edward Essa, the owner of a home in the Fairfax District where authorities say parties have been repeatedly shut down by police since last fall, are among those charged.
After the last party, the Mayor of LA reportedly requested that power be cut off to the house. How is Nyjah supposed to remain an LA party person without throwing parties?
