Why No One Cares About The X Games

by The Editors on May 14, 2013

Shaun_White_2008-424x412Kilwag, that smarty pants editor of Skate And Annoy, linked up a great story from Salon.com by Matt Reevy titled: Authenticity and the X Games: Why ESPN just doesn’t get it.  In it Reevy gets right down to the heart of the action sports/mainstream media conundrum. We’ve always said that the mainstream doesn’t care, won’t care, and never has cared about action sports. But Reevy makes a much more complete, compelling argument:

Essentially, what ESPN seems to miss,, is that that the statement “I am a skateboarder” is a far different one than “I am a basketball player”. There’s no such thing as the best skateboarder, BMX rider, snowmobiler, skier, or snowboarder. Placing in the X Games is a reflection of a high level of skill, certainly, but it doesn’t make you the best.

Reevy finishes his article off with the statement that Shaun White is neither a snowboarder nor a skateboarder, “he just happens to ride them. Until that changes, no one is going to care about the X Games, regardless of where they’re held.”

While we’d never take anything away from Mr. White’s snowboarding and skateboarding, the larger point is made — X Games? Who really cares? Aside from the people who are getting paid, no one.

Winter X Games Video Results Wrap-up

by The Editors on January 27, 2013

Shaun White won the X Games halfpipe again (his 6th gold medal) on Sunday night, January 27, 2013 with last year’s run. This year he only got a 98 with it, however. Mark McMorris won slope style as did Jamie Anderson (again). Kelly Clark won the women’s pipe and Louif Paradis took Snow Street. Ta duh. We didn’t watch much of the X Games, nor did we travel to Aspen to party on the energy drink dime, but we did collect all the results (and most videos) for you in one place. Peruse them at will after the jump. [click to continue…]

X Games Crosses Out Snowboard X

by The Editors on August 23, 2012

X Game LogoWhile that silly sport where six snowboarders bomb down the same race course all together is still in the Olympics, it will not be in the 2013 X Games, according to a story on ESPN.com/Action.

“There wasn’t one single factor that led to this decision,” said Tim Reed, senior director of content strategy for ESPN X Games. “It just comes down to filling the schedule with how much we believe we need to make the event enjoyable to the fans and deliver on what we need from a product standpoint.”

Reminds us of the way we felt when ESPN cut super modified shovel racing from their live, faux-sporting, action entertainment television event schedule. Yeah, we didn’t feel anything at all. Hey, maybe someday, there won’t even be an X Games.

Shaun White’s 100 Proof X Games Halfpipe Gold

by The Editors on January 30, 2012

Real and true and honest moments are so rare in corporate snowboard sport that when they occur it drops the bottom half of our brains out into our laps and leaves us dumbfounded and quivering. That what happened last night (January 29, 2012) when two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, five-time Winter X Games Gold medalist, Target Clothing Designer, video game character, and 2012 Businessweek Power 100 number 8 Shaun White dropped in on his third and final run in the Winter X Games Halfpipe Finals.

White had already won the gold medal with a score of 94 points, edging second place finisher Iouri Podladtchikov by one point. White was perfectly set up to take a victory lap. He could have just made a four hit run of 23 foot straight airs and the gold would still have been his. But Shaun had some unfinished business. In his second run, White had gone down on his last hit. It was the unveiling of his frontside double-cork 1260 and he didn’t land it. We could tell the moment he dropped in on his final run that he was going to try it again.

As we all know, Shaun landed the back-to-back backside double cork 1260 to frontside double cork 1260 on his last two hits and was awarded the first perfect 100 point score in X Games history. And while it seems an almost too perfectly scripted finish for a Walt Disney Company owned made-for-TV entrainment event property, the truth is Shaun White’s run was one of those real, true, honest moments in snowboarding were an athlete’s performance rises above all the bullshit that surrounds the event, the marketing, and the hype and stands alone on its own screaming for everyone to hear: this is snowboarding.

Shaun White seemed as stoked as we all were. “It’s unreal. I’ve been wanting that 100 forever,” he said. “Thank you everyone here tonight. This is unreal. . . I came here on a mission. I couldn’t compete in slopestyle. I was sitting around icing my ankle. I took out a little of the anger that I couldn’t compete in slope on the pipe tonight. I was upset with my first front double 12 and wanted to get it.

For one of the first times in X Games television show history we were glad we were somewhere with cable and able to watch, because missing this was missing one of those epic moments.

Follow the jump for the full results. [click to continue…]

Spy Optic: Title Eyewear Sponsor Of X Games

by The Editors on January 25, 2012

Vito 750X415The Winter X Games hype is beginning to build and Spy Optic is apparently in on the program as the title eyewear sponsor of Winter X Games 2012.

“The SPY crew is amping on this sponsorship because it properly underscores our commitment to snow sports generally and at the same time allows us to back the tremendous talent we have on our snow team roster,” says Kevin Casillo, SPY marketing manager. “Our snowboarders, skiers and snowmobilers put a lot of preparation and training toward this contest so we’re stoked to help make the X Games rad for them and the fans in attendance.”

This sponsorship will obviously allow Spy to “activate” on site with all the Aspen locals who crowd the base lodge to catch all the action. The games begin tomorrow (on cable) with the snowboard street final. (Do people still have cable?) Follow the jump for the official word. [click to continue…]
