The Block Hotel’s Liko Smith Arrested

by The Editors on September 6, 2008

TheblockLooks like things at The Block Hotel are getting interesting for fall. Eneliko Smith, 37, the manager of the hotel was apparently arrested on Thursday September 4, 2008 by the Las Vegas Metropolitian Police after charges were filed by the El Dorado County District Attorney’s office, according to a story in the Tahoe Daily Tribune.

The complaint, filed Aug. 29, charges Smith – a Las Vegas resident – with one felony count of misappropriating public funds, seven misdemeanor counts of failure to furnish tax-return data and seven misdemeanor counts of failure to pay transient occupancy taxes, according to a statement from South Lake Tahoe police. Transient occupancy tax is levied on hotels and motels.

If you sleep he’ll tax your sheets. He’s the tax man, ooh yeah. . . the tax maaaan.

Just the tip of the iceberg……Liko is a con artist. I am an investor in The Block and Liko embezzled money, commingled funds , stole from friends. The guy is as shady as they come! He is a very small owner in the hotel and acted as if it was his. Just bad news that will catch up with him. And by the way…..he has never been on a snowboard either!

David January 26, 2009 at 1:43 pm

Is either Block hotel still in business?

WAS an employee January 27, 2009 at 2:55 pm

They needed to be shut down. So many people were screwed while they were open. They NEVER paid people for the work they did cosmetically/maintenance to the hotels. The rooms were disgusting, and the hotel managers were shut down if they EVER asked for money to upgrade even comforters. Liko is a pervert as well as many other things. He talked a big game, and unfortunetly, THE BLOCK could’ve been a really rad hotel, but yea, Liko himself f*cked it. Good job buddy!!! Hopefully you have enough money ’cause you f*cked your employees who all worked VERY devotedly for little money. OH. and we NEVER got passes to go ride the mountains, mr.”if you work at the block you’ll never pay to ride”….just another lie from the little man himself.

Montoya was always a good man when he came around, and i dont think even he agreed with Liko’s tactics.

a big F-U liko. Everything finally caught up to you- Do you feel like Mr.Cool now?!

John Cameron January 30, 2009 at 10:41 am

Adam February 3, 2009 at 1:51 pm

John, I’m interested in speaking with you. How can i contact you ?

jack February 8, 2009 at 10:47 pm

liko is still in vegas running another hotel.

Block Investor February 19, 2009 at 9:24 am

I am an ex-investor. Lost everything because of Liko’s embezzalment. Liko is a con-artist and many other pathetic things.

mark February 21, 2009 at 8:36 pm

he is running a hotels on 5100 paradise rd , airport inn and suites and also st. tropez. he is a very shaddy character driving his nice black jaguar.

Ex Employee March 13, 2009 at 1:31 am

One of the shadiest people I have ever met. He preached as though he was the greatest business man on the planet and a big time snowboarder. The guy never snowboarded in his life and ran a hotel into the ground. Oh and Nice business suit and rockstar trucker hat .. what a clown.

Ripped off too! May 6, 2009 at 5:43 pm

Liko has my money too from a commercial center in Las Vegas. Looked me right in the eye, shook my hand, and lied to me.

Whatever May 12, 2009 at 2:00 pm

Get real folks. Do you not understand the nature of investments? How many times has ‘the Donald’ filed for bankruptcy and still he tries again. I wouldn’t trust anyone on here claiming some malicious lie is the truth. It’s easy to ruin someone’s life on the internet. All true cowards do it.

block lover May 17, 2009 at 11:21 am

I went to the block thinking it would be chill as fuck. I watched the show and thought it would be killer and fuck was I wrong. The place was so shady its crazy. The staff had no idea what to do, the management were totally stupid. The room reeked out sex and pot. I smoke but when I throw down that kind of money, I want a good room. Met Liko and he was a total ass to me. You think he would want to be nice to the people who stay there. He is a poser and a loser.

Ex Employee May 21, 2009 at 7:55 am

I worked at the hotel in big bear for three years for that lying piece of shit. I dont know how one person could be such a fuck up. When the big bear hotel closed on Jan 23 due to forclosure liko showed up with a U-Haul and 3 tweakers that were living with him promising that this was just the beggining as he ripped tvs from the walls and couches from the floors. He also took the last remaining money from the safe that was supposed to be our pay but he insisted he was going to send a check, and he sure did my last pay check bounced for over six hundred dollars. If I ever see this guy again it will be to soon, if anyone has anything on his where abouts let me know

s June 18, 2009 at 7:04 pm

I can totally agree with all of the ibid statements about Liko being an ass!!! I was there when the hotel was just in transition from being the Lamplighter Inn to the BLOCK. Liko made me sell outdated rooms to callers who were promised boot dryers, pimp rooms (his cheezy words, not mine), and many other ammenities that simply didn’t exist. He charged outragious rates, and when customers showed up expecting a cool new botique hotel they were sorely mistaken. Liko was/is AN EXTREMELY SHADY PERSON, and a cruel businessmen (so-to-speak).
Also, this is a warning to everyone who has worked at the BLOCK. I had identity theft last year. I live on the East Coast but police traced the imposter to NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV..surprise, surprise, that’s were Liko lived. I wouldn’t be surprised if that fool was selling all former employees social security numbers for cash. He is a fucking looser who deserves everything that comes his way.

Eric July 14, 2009 at 10:03 am

What happen to you Liko? Your a long way from Ft. Ord now.

TropicalParadise August 27, 2009 at 9:24 am

Liko should not be trusted at all. He was a married man and continously had affairs with girls staying at the Block. what a loser, a cheater and con man! i feel bad for anyone who invested in his hotels.

Trolley October 19, 2009 at 11:34 am

For all of you wondering as to Liko’s whereabouts, he is currently part of a hotel aquisition in Troy, MI. The current name of the hotel is Ramada Plaza.

This is 100% guaranteed. I know an employee of this hotel who had a face-to-face meeting with him Friday, October 16, 2009.

Bill October 21, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Yep, I hope Liko gets the book thrown at him.
I stayed at The Block in both SLT and at Bear, more than a few times, and there was something rotten going on.
Cool concept, but a lot of hype and bullshit. And Liko acting like he was the shit.
Good luck to all the good names that invested in, worked for, or got screwed by The Block.
See you on the slopes at Heavenly and Summit this year, and at Mammoth this coming week. Have we got some early snow this year or what?
Oh, yes. One last thing… Fuck you Liko. I hope you like the accommodations in the new home you are heading for… prison. You belong behind bars, asshole.

Tom November 9, 2009 at 9:29 pm

Anyone know about The Block in Big Bear status? It apparently was sold at auction but nothing is going on there. Just wondering what is going to happen to the property.

Liko February 8, 2010 at 4:49 pm

To all- “whatever” is right. All Cowards try to ruin someones life on the internet. I will clear up a few things- 1. the hotels were not run properly, we should’ve hired hotel people, not snowboarders, loyal fuckers but just not intersted in hotels that much 2. the reality show was a distraction from a hotel that was too small to handle it while still trying to run a business 3. there were way too many small investors who were jealous about the publicity but rightly nervous that the cash flows didn’t match and when the time came, couldn’t pony up the funds to help out 4. the communities hated us because we did not communicate well enough with them on our plans so they thought we were evil incarnate. 5. I am not nor will I ever be a true snowboarder, I love business too much and I won’t make the time, I love Golf, and I golf once a year, Ill do the rest of this shit when Im old and rich. 6. I spent over $400,000 of my own money over 3 years propping up the hotels because of my ego instead of issuing cash calls and when I did, the investors claimed i was mismanaging but nobody would step up to run the hotels, and even when I sent over the books and there was no irregularity, they apologized in private and talked shit in public as if it was some “jerry springer” show. 7. After six months of back and forth BS with banks and investors while triing to run ahotel wil oil spills, mudslides and shit killing business and being accused of being money hungry, I gave the hotels back to the banks “in advance” fuck those greedy fuckin banks, and fuck the investors that claim I give a shit about money- so I bit my own arm off. FYI- the city tried to sell the hotel to a friend of mine last week for a million; I told him it wasn’t worth it. ..they dont deserve it…small communities hate new ideas..I was too big of a bang and too small of a they were able to hurt me..never again. There will be more blocks, just keep reading your paper. Every righteous investor will get paid back, ..every sponsor will get tenfold what they put into it and every customer will get a well run hotel. I am into the big leagues, I have four guys I work with, all mulitimillionaires who “can lose’ the money if we’re wrong and make a shitload if we’re right but no more small time, we’re going for 150 room plus full service hotels, and the resorts, and golf courses that make money, run by hotel people, paycash to investors and hire entire communities of people and in the end; no more gettin monkey fucked by small minded people in any form. That’s a promise. Some of you may hate me, shit,,.I don’t blame you.. I do dumb shit just like you do; but I don’t screw anybody, Im just not so into being liked that I give a shit what people think when I;m doing the best I can and being fucked with at the same time. I drooped a bomb on those people. IF you know me from the BLOCK, you know Iv’e been known to knock fools out; I do the same in business. Always dream big..always do your best,..always come back…Never step away from the table…and never give up. Look out for me this year.

Liko February 8, 2010 at 10:09 pm

One more thing as I can’t respond to All of the comments on the internet nor will I attempt such.

Every investor that has ever given me a dollar will be paid back with interest. I also lost everything financially and otherwise and rightfully so; (it was my fuckin idea), but though I’ve had my differences with some select individuals, they deserve their money back.

It has been a big regret in my life that so many small investors laid their funds on the line, some were friends, some were close friends, some were relatives of friends and also my friendship with MFM.

I still hold the investor lists and they will be paid in full, by the end of this year, the total funds and compensation are being programmed into my future deals; as I stand up, so will they.

After this year; No person will ever be able to say that Liko Smith lost their money.

David from vegas February 9, 2010 at 4:18 am

Liko You were always a stand up guy!Someone should say that.Sounds like these people dont know the man.
Hope u find sucess brother!!

David from vegas February 9, 2010 at 4:36 am

Liko how can I get a hold of you?

Merrill Metzger February 24, 2010 at 10:16 pm

I don’t know about your business deals and I personally don’t care. I don’t understand what others thought it was going to do by posting crap online but that’s their problem.
When you came to the island to try to get your ex wife back and Joe showed up instead I thought for sure there was going to be a fight, but you did’nt and there was no fight and then !!!!!!!!!!
You gave them your blessings, let me tell everyone here and beyond that was a real man who can do what Liko did. You are a stand up guy as far as I am concerned and you know what Liko ? May the person who has never made a mistake cast the first stone ! They can’t man they can’t because we all fall short and they are no better or no worse !
Good luck in your business adventure I hope it works this time….

Someone Interested February 26, 2010 at 6:50 pm

Well Sean looks like you have a decorated past. What are your new plans? Are you going to be able to follow through on the new promises you have pending? How?

Sam Miller March 3, 2010 at 10:31 am

This is HIGHlarious! watching the Rob Dyrdek show~ We had booked a room @ that shithole “the Block” . When we got there and saw that p.o.s. ghetto painted whore of a “motel” we left. When they tried to charge my card luckily AMEX called me. Never met this liko person but it ALL makes sense now. SKETCHY doesn’t even describe that place

jo campbell April 6, 2010 at 9:03 am

he’s trying to buy the Sugar Loaf resort in Leelanau Mich. Is this gur from the zUSA or else whereZ? His 1st name doesn’t match his last..Smith???

sugarloaf hope April 10, 2010 at 6:12 am

hello …. leelanau residents… have you read this? wuz up with this guy? trustworthy? honest? ETHICAL? we need a buyer, but REALLY?

SugarLoafer April 21, 2010 at 8:34 am

My big worry is with the fund raiser up in TC at Red Ginger this week. I hope if anyone contributes, that their money will go right to the future of the Loaf and not towards paying people back. I really hope our people up north are checking all this stuff out, in depth to make sure this is going to be in the best interest of SL.

El Gotto Jones April 26, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Leelanau County – how do you “liko” being “remoed””?

Larry Todd April 26, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Leelanau, Grand Traverse folk, please don’t give mr. smith your money for the fund raiser at Red Ginger. The money goes to his personal paypal account, and shouldn’t you be giving money to an entity? Plus how can he promise lift tickets when he doesn’t even own the property yet. Scam, scam, scam

Wild SugarLoafer May 9, 2010 at 3:37 pm

To Everyone on here if you know one thing about business is that it is always a risk and for the ski industries it is a big risk especially in the times we are in now. I have worked for Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands for 12 years and i have watched the ups and downs, I also worked at Sugar Loaf for years and watched it collapse. One thing there the last GM didnt give a shit about the resort just what he was getting paid and how much time he could get on the hill. Regardless of all that what else is going to happen to Sugar Loaf if we dont try to put a little faith in Liko, Im willing to give my knowledge as i have been in the industry for years. Business is tough and only the tough survive so those of you bitching i guess you were not tough enough, sorry. Lets get this new place rolling

Liko May 15, 2010 at 12:50 pm

I just want to say. That douche bag that tried to act like me, is not actually me. Just because you put my name on here doesn’t mean anything. The truth is… I’m a douche bag.

For Real June 2, 2010 at 12:11 pm

The truth is this:

THE BLOCK started out great! customers loved it. Liko was a real general manager. took his shit seriously. With out Liko the block would never have had a chance. With Liko’s close eye on the biz it was able to expand to 50 units then to open another hotel in big bear lake, ca. It actually started to kill it in Big bear lake…

Then, the reality show came about, liko stopped giving a fuck about the hotels and his employees. He would still talk the big game that he used to live by, but unfortunately all he did was talk. He had bigger and better plans then the block Hotel, so he put all of his focus on future endeavors,(Which was not much focus) completely ignoring the hotel that was bringing all of the good press and possible investors for new ventures to him. The block was the only reason that other big names wanted to work with Liko. Too bad, because Liko let THE BLOCK go to shit!

If Liko had just been patient and not gotten greedy, then the blocks would most likely be world wide by now.

Until Liko can take accountability for his actions and admit that he single handedly, financially devasted many people, he will always be on the run.

Take 1 Las Vegas June 25, 2010 at 11:30 pm

Very interesting reading all of this. As I had no dealings with any of these properties with Liko, I cannot comment. But I will say, the dealing I had with him was straight ahead.

I was selling the liquor license to the nightclub I owned in Vegas which was connected to a hotel that was owned by an associate of Liko’s. Liko was handling the sale of the license to the new tenants. These tenants actually turned out to be the scam artists (Angelica and company) who had no business in the bar business. Liko had to pony up and advance the money out of his own pocket for the sale of the license and it wasn’t even his club.

I was going to possibly work with him on some other dealings but didn’t have the chance. Listen, the bar and hospitality business is a risky one, especially in towns like Vegas. It’s like the entertainment business which I am involved in. The typical hospitality employee is only interested in one person … his or herself. I know from personal experience. They’ll jump ship and talk trash at a drop of a hat.

So with this, I say good luck Liko in what ever you’re working on. Thanks for the assistance at the time.

Liko July 31, 2010 at 2:55 pm

To all of you that are following me so closely. I have to agree with “For Real” up top…I am an excellent GM (the best one I know) but as I stepped away from the operations and stepped into growing the brand, the hotels were very hard to run as the concept grew and managing reality shows, hotels, a restaurant, events, sponsors and the funding and planning of expansion were too much for me to handle alone..I didnt’ have the right team to oversee the properties on a day to day basis and then add in that the seasonality of Big Bear and Tahoe adding more stress to operations which forced me to allocate cash that I didnt have at times to prop them up while trying to get seed funding at the same time, if this had all worked out like I planned (as I hoped growing would solve many of the short term problems), it would’ve been an awesome time for THE BLOCK brand but it didn’t, the economy took a shit, the convention center tanked, I had pr and legal problems with the communities and add in the constant bickering with investors, I simply decided to stop everything and make a new start in the worst economy ever- that takes balls but its’ also very difficult personally and professionally but that’s life ladies and gents. You can’t learn without mistakes and pain.
As to the investors that lost money. That’s investing, I lost as much as anyone else, and that’s a fact of life on several deals. I’ve made a tremendous amount, lost a tremendous amount but one thing I’ve never done is sat on the sidelines hoping for the best or blamed anyone for my have to move forward in life. Ive started to make it back and that’s the most important. My biggest fault with THE BLOCK was moving too fast, too soon without making sure the minutes could add up to the hour as we went into a large expansion… live and learn. There will be more success in the future and that’s something I’ve always been luck with..THE BLOCK is not dead, and I don’t mind the Napolean reference, he was sharp, as the French.. Keep up with me at The story goes on.

Liko July 31, 2010 at 2:59 pm

To Take 1, no problem- it was good working with you- Liko

Sasha V. August 13, 2010 at 2:10 am

Hey Liko, good seeing you and your wife at LAVO tuesday night! Damn man, you seen a gym lately? 🙂

brian September 20, 2010 at 1:13 pm

I stayed at both Block hotels, they were by far the worst ran hotels ever. In Tahoe I got in at around 10pm to a dead hotel and was told my check in time was a pain in the @ss, I got to my room in which the carpet was soaked and actually had mushrooms growing on it. Nobody was available at the office so I had to sleep in that damp hole until morning. Big Bear was cleaner but just land and in a piss poor location compared to town and while almost every car leaving The Block is a cop magnet to CHP(easy DUI), cab service absolutely sucks there. Goodbye and good riddance.

Lloyd November 23, 2010 at 4:29 pm

Wonder what happened to the deal with Ron dyrdek
