Chanel Sends DC A Cease & Desist

by The Editors on December 11, 2009

Chaneldc LogoThe DC Shoes website seems to be missing a few belts, wallets, and other accessories that featured the DC logo. And there appears to be what one friend called “a distinct lack of snowboards” on the DC Snowboarding website. Strange, no?

According to sources, Chanel, which makes a few belts, wallets, snowboards, and other sporting equipment of their own, has reportedly sent DC a cease and desist letter requesting that DC stop producing several items featuring the Chanel-like intertwined DC letters. From the looks of the DC websites it appears that Quiksilver legal is cooperating with the request and then some.

Those who follow along may remember a similar skirmish between the brands in the 90s when DC founders Ken Block and Damon Way reportedly made a deal suggesting that since DC was “just a small skateboard company” that Chanel would allow DC to use the logo on skate shoes and some apparel. Now that DC is part of a billion dollar fashion label it appears that Chanel is looking at their products a little more carefully and it would appear that at least a few logo changes may be on the horizon at DC.

Requests for comment to both Chanel and Quiksilver have not been returned.

there are enough creative resources in the house of block to put a new spin on logo feels for segmented product lines, it could be a good thing for the brand if they stay positive and let this be the catalyst for new creative progression.

dc have had this logo for, since 93? why is chanel now coming forward with this? reminds me of the gucci logo rather than chanel.

Shit…you mean those Chanel sunglasses i got my girlfriend are actually DC? I’m never going to shop at TJ Max again.

i guess this is why DC took down all their snowboards from their website

Friend of mine thought I was rocking Dolce & Gabbana shoes the other day. Maybe D&G should get in on the act too.

If quik wasn’t in so much financial trouble maybe they could fight it?? Seems weird to just roll over.

NigHeist December 13, 2009 at 11:41 pm

Quik’s not going to fight it because they could care less about the DC brand, such as it is…

Over the last two months Quik has A) laid off heaps of DC employees, iincluding many longtime ones that helped build the brand, B) announced the closure of the DC’s Vista headquarters and will be moving the brand to their HB offices (which is already crowded as all get out).

Quik wants to bury everything that made DC, DC …and reinvent it so that it is more “Quiksilver”

if DC, Quik legal had been a bit more careful, they would have not let a bunch of 20 year old designers and product developpers come up with a bunch of ripoff belts, wallets and bags from the Chanel side.
This is perfect tool for chanel to show intent and bad faith and then tie it to the logo design.
if not for those socal cool kids bozos, the logo alone would have never been a fully winnable issue for chanel…

chanel is the devil December 15, 2009 at 1:16 pm

you all have no clue, if QS were to fight it they would win…. especially since chanel didn’t even have a snowboard line til this year….. go to hell you overpaid faacks! chanel can suck my wang…. those hi-faluting douchebags…. leave our industry alone… and take that gay ass ed hardy snow crap with you……

bob December 15, 2009 at 9:49 pm

i remember when dc was a skate company…..now it’s like the wwe….full blown sports entertainment. karma is a bitch

This is bull****, f*** chanel! what have they ever done for the grass roots? – squat! If anything DC should be telling them they can’t put their logo on a snowboard. This maybe just my opinion but in the market which will buy snowboards surely DC is a much more widely recognised logo, Chanel to me is perfume! Corporate c****, not even the same letters in the logo!

Grow up people , you can clearly see it is a D and C, not two c’s so what’s the frigging problem , get off your high horse chanel and let DC Shoes keep making great products!!!!

This is good. I hate that the logo of DC looks almost the same than chanel and even dolce and gabanna. Next thing you know people might think you are wearing 70 dollars DC shoes when you in fact are wearing 500 dollars Dolce and Gabanna shoes.
