Red Mountain Adds Nearly 1,000 Acres

by The Editors on September 26, 2012

British Columbia Canada’s Red Mountain is nearly doubling their in-bounds terrain this season with an addition of 997 acres.

The 997-acre expansion on Grey alone is about the same size as the revered Mt. Baker Ski Area in Washington. To put this in perspective, total acreage with our new terrain on Grey makes RED larger than Jackson Hole, Wyoming. With the new zone, RED is elevated to the top three-percent (3%) of all resorts in North America for skiable acres (2,682!), while keeping its independent soul and escaping the stuffy (and expensive) trappings of many of the Mega Resorts.

For the 2012-13 season the Grey Zone will be accessed by an Alpina Sherpa sled, but during the summer of 2013 the resort is putting in a Poma Quad Chair. That means the civilians are coming. Better get it while you can this winter. Follow the jump for the official word from Red Mountain. [click to continue…]

Mark Your Calendars For A Throwdown

by The Editors on September 26, 2012

Dttd 2012A

Lib Tech’s 7th Annual Downtown Throwdown returns to the crushed icy streets of Seattle (October 6, 2012) and San Francisco (October 27, 2012) to delight shred fans with epic shred rail work from some of snowboarding’s best show ponies.

The DTTD has grown from a local DIY project to the most anticipated and respected urban snowboarding event in the world. “It’s rad to see it keep growing each year,” says event creator Krush Kulesza “we were able to increase the prize money again, added some new features, the rider list is insane and Lib Tech’s even doing snow cones…it’ll be all-time!” . . Speaking of that rider list, easily the heaviest to date with Forest Bailey, Dylan Thompson, Dylan Alito, Brandon Hobush, Scott Stevens, Nick Visconti, Austin Hironaka, Ted Borland, Andrew Brewer, Ryan Paul, Desiree Melancon, Sean Black, Danyale Peterson, Austen Sweetin, Johnny Lazz, Brandon Hammid, Johnny Brady, Jaeger Bailey, Ethan Deiss, Nial Romanek, Max Warbington, Chris Brewster, Stefan Krumm, Yale Cousino, Zak Hale, Chris Cloud, Spencer Schubert and Daniel Brown all confirmed.

Sounds rad. Just remember not to drink that foul green juice they’ll undoubtedly be handing out at the event. Follow the jump for all the official details. [click to continue…]

14th Annual Tim Brauch Memorial Results

by The Editors on September 26, 2012

431-1Last weekend Sessions and the skate community celebrated the life of legendary skateboarder Tim Brauch at the 14th Annual Tim Brauch Memorial Contest in San Jose and Scotts Valley, California.

Its actually quite difficult to decide what the best part of the bowl is with Pro, Masters (40 and older), From (15 and younger), Amateur, and Girls divisions each giving a fantastic show. Every year the contest brings out a strong line up of pros- this years roster included Michael Brookman, Josh Rodriguez, and Sky Siljeg (pictured above) just to name a few. The competition’s Masters division regularly brings out legendary veterans like local Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, and Christian Hosoi, skaters that turned pro more than 30 years ago, but continue to shred hard. These skaters created some of the sports most well known tricks and built the sport into what is today.

The German Skate/Hunting Lodge

by The Editors on September 26, 2012

Skate-House

German pro skateboarder Philipp Schuster has turned his “remount hunting retreat in Salzburg, German” into a smallish indoor training facility, according to a post on Dornob.com.

After stripping out the parts already falling apart, Schuster reintegrated traditional elements that fit the typology of a rural German residence, but woven together with new ramps and bumps for skateboarding throughout.

Love the fire place. Follow the jump to see more. . . [click to continue…]

Zeal’s GPS Heads Up Display Goggle

by The Editors on September 25, 2012

Zeal Z3

No need to wonder where you are, how high, how cold, how fast you’re going, or how far you jumped. Nope. With the new Zeal Z3 (with Recon MOD GPS and Polarized Automatic lens) all that data will be displayed right up in your face on a 16×9 widescreen display that only you can see. It can be paired with a Smartphone to allow you to see who’s calling you maybe, read text messages, all without even touching the phone.

The stunning GPS capabilities of the MOD Live can pin-point your location to within a meter, tracing your every move on the slopes. The on-board altimeter shadows you to the summit, where the thermometer informs you of the alpine conditions. . . As you set off, carving through the backcountry, your path is followed from mountain peak to ski lodge. Long gone are the days of soggy paper trail maps. You can now find your way around resorts easily aided by intuitive navigational features.

We didn’t believe it until we tried a pair on at the SIA Show in Denver last winter. We didn’t think it would work with our contacts on, but the Recon heads up display was in perfect focus. There, but not at all distracting.

Nike Uses US Open And Moves On

by The Editors on September 25, 2012

Nike-LogoThis is hardly worth mentioning, but (big surprise) Nike has reportedly gotten everything it can out of both the US Open of Surfing and the City of Huntington Beach, California and is kicking their whole sponsorship deal to the curb, according to an interview on a Shopping Eating and Surfing blog.

As one would expect Nike’s Global Action Sports VP Sandy Bodecker believes Nike did so much for the event, the sport, and the entire world of action sports that the company (and all its brands) can now move on to other venues and spread their all-knowing amazingness.

Connecting with millions of fans in the heart of the action sports community was amazing experience for both brands,” Bodecker said. “Working with IMG and the City of Huntington Beach allowed for the elevation of the US Open of Surfing to positively impact a broader audience and introduce them to the power and excitement of sport. . . In putting on an event with such large exposure, we pushed our teams to find an authentic connection to stay true to the core of the sport and lifestyle. . . The biggest challenge ahead for the US Open is to bring the energy from Huntington Beach to even more fans across the world.

In the Orange County Register, Nike apologist Evan Slater (Hurley PR) said Nike did what it came to do in terms of elevating the contest and attracting more top surfers.

“But we also strive to constantly innovate and evolve. For us, we’ve decided to export what we created at the U.S. Open and invest it into other aspects of our business, like a renewed athlete focus and new and exciting ways of connecting with millions of kids.”

As we’ve said before, Nike’s only interest in action sports is that they occasionally believe our sports will help them sell more branded product to more people. When that stops working they’ll move on to something else.
