Timberline Fires The Palmer Back Up

by The Editors on September 29, 2010

25201082 480X319Mt. Hood, Oregon’s Timberline Resort is opening Friday, October 1, 2010, according to Fox12.

Late spring storms, summer grooming and maintenance of the Palmer Snowfield have provided enough snow for skiing and snowboarding above 7,000 feet. . . Lodge officials said the Magic Mile and Palmer chairs will operate Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through October, weather conditions permitting.

This early opening doesn’t really play into the whole annual “race to be the first open,” but it’s good to know we get riding again on the Palmer.

Todd Franzen Profiled On ESPN/Action

by The Editors on September 29, 2010

As Snb Franzen1 576Wondering whatever happened to pro snow shred Todd Franzen? ESPN/Action has a great story by Devon O’Neill on the demise of Franzen’s pro snowboarding career and his on-going battle with Stage IV Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

What happened over the next 10 months radically altered Franzen’s world view. Not because cancer destroyed his life — almost the opposite, in fact. In a strange twist he still struggles to explain, cancer — a disease that kills more than 500,000 Americans each year — filled the same role snowboarding had nearly 20 years prior. . . It gave him purpose.

The battle is not over yet, but Franzen’s amazing sense of humor has survived. Click the link to read the rest.

GoPro HD Hero 960: HD Gets More Affordable

by The Editors on September 29, 2010

Gopro HeroWhen we’re at resorts and we see the kind of people who are riding around with GoPro camera’s locked onto the tops of their helmets we can’t help but laugh. Then again, seeing Tim Humphrey film himself rocking the Mammoth park, or Chuck Patterson’s footage of the great white sharks at San Onofre, we begin to understand what this small Half Moon Bay, California based camera company has done to change the way we view action sports.

Today, GoPro is announcing the release of the HD Hero 960. A more affordable version ($179) of their HD Hero.

The HD HERO 960 is an entry level version of the original 1080p HD HERO, sharing the same cutting edge video and audio capture technology but with resolutions on the HD HERO 960 limited to 960p (1280 x 960) and 720p (1280 x 720) at 30 frames per second, and WVGA (848 x 480) at 60 frames per second. Also removed from the HD HERO 960 is the HERO BUS™ expansion port that is present on the full featured 1080p HD HERO. The HERO BUS allows for LCD, secondary battery and additional expansion BacPacs™ to be attached to the original 1080p HD HERO camera, but not the HD HERO 960.

We’re not going to be riding around like Al Franken with a camera on our heads any time soon, but we can think of all kinds of great uses for a small, cheap waterproof HD video camera. Follow the jump for more info or click here to buy one.

Bonnier Stirs Things Up In Print

by The Editors on September 28, 2010

Bonnier Corp Logo-1Seems the Bonnier Corporation (overlords of Transworld Media) is switching up nearly everything this month.

Bonnier management canned the editorial director at the Parenting Group, moved their Garden Design magazine offices to New York City, rebranded Wakeboarding as Transworld Wakeboarding magazine, and more importantly, eliminated three positions in the Carlsbad, California offices including the publisher of Transworld Skateboarding magazine, a job held by 11-year Transworld veteran Jamey Stone. Transworld Group Publisher Liam Ferguson explains:

TransWorld Media recently made a very small reduction in its workforce in an effort to cut costs, offset expenses and strategically plan for future initiatives that are currently in line for the company,” Ferguson said in an email. “In order to ensure the ongoing success of TransWorld Media, these tough decisions with our TransWorld Family were made so we can continue to provide an exceptional level of service to our audience, advertisers, and existing employees.”

Hard times, hard decisions. Jamey’s deep knowledge of skateboarding and dedication to authenticity is reportedly already being missed at the company. And, as most media companies are being forced to adjust staff sizes to meet new economies realities, the question many have is who will be next?

Quiksilver Games The System

by The Editors on September 28, 2010

Youride

The whole game with online marketing is trying to figure out how much to give away in exchange for user’s personal information. Quiksilver has apparently decided that a working email address is enough. They’ve partnered with YouRiding Games to create a virtual version of the Quiksilver Pro France 2010.

The game allows. . . you to play the contest waves through two different game modes: SOLO Mode allows players to become ”Master of the Spot” by completing a series of challenges that get harder and harder. Lots of prizes offered by Quiksilver, in particular a package including board and wetsuit, are to be won by drawing via this game mode: MULTI Mode offers a chance to challenge his own Facebook friends in head-to-head contest by creating yourself your own challenges.

We’d play the game and review it, but we’re not up for trading an email for it right now. Check it out if you are. You could win a board and a wetsuit and probably get better waves that the ASP Top 32 who had another lay-day last night.

British Columbia Sues Whistler Blackcomb

by The Editors on September 27, 2010

3587252.BinOn April 19, 2008 snowboarder Amanda Yan caught an edge on the Crystal Road Run and slid off the road and then fell off a cliff resulting in traumatic injuries including dislocated vertebrae and ribs, broken leg, broken shoulder blade, kidney lacerations, and traumatic brain injury.

Now, the BC government is reportedly suing Whistler Blackcomb to recoup Yan’s heathcare costs, according to a story in The Province.

The statement of claim says that the accident was caused by the negligence and breach of duty of the defendant, named as Blackcomb Skiing Enteprises Limited Partnership, the owners and operators of Blackcomb Mountain and Whistler Mountain. . . It says the mountain created a hazardous condition and failed to erect any, or any adequate, warning signs alerting users to the presence of a sharp drop-off and cliff adjacent to the run. . . The company failed to erect a barrier that would have prevented Yan from going down the embankment and over the cliff, says the lawsuit.

If it isn’t gondola’s failing, or parts falling off chairlifts, or bolts breaking, or drive motor malfunctions on the Peak 2 Peak, or snowcats getting caught in avalanches, or foreclosure, or fires, it’s getting sued by their own government. When will Whistler Blackcomb ever get a break?

Jeff Harbaugh On Nike Q1 2010

by The Editors on September 27, 2010

Harbaugh HeaderJeff Harbaugh delves into Nike’s recently reported quarterly numbers today on his Market Watch blog and sees another quarter of the “monster” is doing well on nearly all fronts; including Hurley and Converse.

Hurley, which we’d all like lots of details on but don’t get, is part of Nike’s “Other Businesses” segment. In addition to Hurley, the segment includes Cole Hann, Converse, NIKE golf and Umbro. That segment generated revenues of $693 in the quarter. Hurley revenues were up double digit, but that’s the only specific we get, and it’s not all that specific.

For the rest of Harbaugh’s walk though click the link. . .
