Powder & Rails Locates Noah Salasnek

by The Editors on December 22, 2009

Noah Salasnek had one of the smoothest skate styles in snowboarding. He never forced his way into anything, but always stood out. Thanks to some prodding from Chris Roach, Noah got in front of the Powder and Rails cameras to talk about the day.

We still smile whenever we think about his old Sims graphic–the one with the trucks and wheels on the base. We’re glad Noah’s story is finally getting out.

Shaun White’s Hot Summer Ahead

by The Editors on December 22, 2009

Rackmultipart.16941.0 Display ImageSo the beacher report, a blog that apparently covers sports and hot girls, says that Summer Spiro is Shaun White’s girlfriend and one of the “sports WAGs to watch this year.” They say:

The blond beauty is the girlfriend of the multi-talented Shaun White, who will be shredding up the Olympics for a second time. . . Spiro is not just a pretty face. She’s a musician who has a band with her sister Ruby called—wait for it—Ruby Summer.

Obviously, we’ve been so distracted by Shaun’s double-doubles that we completely forgot about his love life. We apologize and hope it doesn’t happen again.

[Editors’ Note: We thought it was clearly obvious in the above post that we know nothing about Mr. White’s love life or who his girlfriend is. We were merely pointing out what the bleacher report was saying. Today we got an email from Shaun’s Red Bull handlers saying the story is “not true, can you please remove off your site. Shaun’s girlfriend is not Summer Spiro.” We reworked one sentence to clear things up.]

[Editors’ Note on previous Editors’ Note: Today we received a second email from Shaun White’s handlers at Red Bull. This time with the following message: “Thanks, it’s really not a big deal. The photo is actually not even of Summer, so bleacher reports just release a false story, no worries. Can you please remove the additional note you put, regarding my communication, please.” So for the record: bleacher report made up their post entirely. They probably should have used this photo instead then they only would have been half wrong.]

Boardistan Announces Plans For Tablet Device

by The Editors on December 21, 2009

Bstan Tablet

Boardistan is thrilled to be the first action sports brand to announce its plans for a full compliment of content features built especially for the upcoming Apple tablet device if and when it is finally available to the public.

“When Steve Jobs announces his Jesus Tablet we will be ready,” The Publisher of Boardistan said in a press release. “Our editors have been working with our design team for months testing and analyzing the way users interact with our content. After compiling the data we have chosen to implement an amazing technology called WordPress 2.9. This open-source content management system will allow us to digitally distribute our surf, snow, and skate content on all tablet devices through a revolutionary application called “a web browser.” This, coupled with the tablet’s portability, will allow Boardistan.com users to view our content absolutely free whenever and wherever they choose.”

The all-new Tablet platform will also allow users to interact with the content by adding their own comments to posts, but more importantly, users will be able to search Boardistan’s 10 years of action sports content for their favorite brands, riders, and topics and then share this information through social media apps like Twitter, Facebook, and even email.

“We really do believe this is the future of media and we are just ecstatic to be including our users in our cutting-edge plans for the digital future,” The Publisher said. “Being first isn’t new to us, but it never seems to lose its thrill.”

Stay tuned for more exciting updates as we near the Apple Tablet’s pending launch.

Shark Kills Lifeguard On South Africa’s Wild Coast

by The Editors on December 21, 2009

0000028323South African beach goers reportedly “watched in horror yesterday as a lifeguard at the Wild Coast was pulled off his paddling board by a shark and mauled to death” according to a story on Dispatch Online.

As the 22-year-old disappeared beneath the water of Port St Johns’ Second Beach, the ocean turned red. . . His remains have yet to be found. The victim’s name has been withheld until officials inform his family. . . He becomes the fourth person to die from the jaws of a shark at the same beach in two years. . . Witnesses I spoke to said they saw his hands in the air for a short while before his whole body disappeared under the water and a red pool of blood was seen on the surface. Only his kneeboard washed ashore,” said Costello.

Palmer Still Hunting Olympic Dreams

by The Editors on December 21, 2009

20091220 20091221 C01 Sp21Olysbx~P2.JpgOne the high points of Shaun Palmer’s wonderful horrible life was when he made the US Olympic snowboard team for the 2006 Torino Olympics. When a torn Achilles tendon pulled him out of the Olympics we were all pissed that the guy USA Today once called the “world’s greatest athlete” wouldn’t have a shot at an Olympic medal.

But, according to a Scott Willoughby story in the Denver Post, you can’t count the 41-year-oid Pizalm out just yet.

Palmer is back this season for another shot at the Olympics, saying that the injury doesn’t affect his snowboarding these days. And after qualifying second at the opening World Cup snowboardcross race of the season a month ago and 12th here in Telluride last weekend, it would seem that the speed is still there. . . He could become the oldest man to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team with a repeat of his 2006 performance, but he has only three chances left to do it — the next one in Bad Gastein in January. After two of five Olympic qualifying races, he has finished no better than 17th.

We can think of nothing cooler than Shaun Palmer on an Olympic podium.

Tony Hawk Doubles Skate Watts Donations

by The Editors on December 21, 2009

Watts-Proposed-ParkIt’s easy to think about what we’d do if we had loads of revenue coming in, but now thanks to the The Tony Hawk Foundation we all can give twice as much as we we thought we could.

In addition to giving away $130,000 to help 14 low-income communities across the U.S. build skateboard parks the Foundation has committed to a “dollar-for-dollar” match on any funds raised via skatewatts.org through January 15, 2010.

Having helped launch it in October, the Tony Hawk Foundation is also featuring the Watts Skatepark project during the Athletes For Hope Who Gives? Racing For A Cause challenge, a widely publicized fundraising event hosted by globalgiving.org/athletes-for-hope/. . . . With few alternatives to crime, gangs, and drugs, youth in the Watts community struggle daily to find healthy pastimes that can keep them engaged and active. Through this effort to build a free-quality public skatepark in Watts, the Tony Hawk Foundation is helping local youth realize their dream of a world-class skatepark. . . Make a contribution during this limited campaign, and the impact of your donation will be DOUBLED.

Now is our chance to make Tony pay. Donate $10 and Tony will make it $20.
