Snowboarder Dies At Killington

by The Editors on December 28, 2009

A 20-year-old Connecticut man found unconscious in the middle of a Killington Resort run on Thursday, December 24, 2009, died, according to a story in the Times Argus.

According to an e-mail sent Sunday from Tom Horrocks, the resort’s communications manager, the man “died following a snowboard accident.” . . . “Killington Ski Patrol responded to reports of an unconscious person on Cascade Trail at approximately 12 p.m., brought him down the mountain, then transferred the man to Regional Ambulance Service,” according to the e-mail, with information Horrocks said he received from the resort’s risk manager.

All that the resort would say was that “the man did not fall from a chair and he was wearing a helmet.”

Re-Imagining White Masculinity & Skateboarding?

by The Editors on December 25, 2009

SkatelifeEmily Chivers Yochim, an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Arts, Allegheny College, has a new book out from the University of Michigan Press. The book is titled Skate Life: Re-Imagining White Masculinity reportedly uses a group of skateboarders to investigate the status of the young American male.

Skate Life examines how young male skateboarders use skate culture media in the production of their identities. Emily Chivers Yochim offers a comprehensive ethnographic analysis of an Ann Arbor, Michigan, skateboarding community, situating it within a larger historical examination of skateboarding’s portrayal in mainstream media and a critique of mainstream, niche, and locally produced media texts (such as, for example, Jackass, Viva La Bam, and Dogtown and Z-Boys). The book uses these elements to argue that adolescent boys can both critique dominant norms of masculinity and maintain the power that white heterosexual masculinity offers.

And that’s just the description. We have a feeling this isn’t going to be on the best seller list anytime soon, but kind of wish we had a review copy all the same.

Kind of surprised that the Totino’s frozen pizza boys don’t have some kind of collab going here. Seems like the perfect fit.

Hannah Teter On Jimmy Fallon

by The Editors on December 23, 2009

Yep, as Hannah Teter said last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon: “gotta defend.” To answer a common Hannah Teter question: No, she’s pretty much always like that. We’re kind of bummed Tom Arnold didn’t try to kiss her. . . maybe next time.

Skiers Hit Snowboarders More Often

by The Editors on December 23, 2009

Snow injury specialist Jasper Shealy, professor emeritus of industrial and systems engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology says skiers run into snowboarders more often than the other way around according to a post on a New York Times blog.

“Most people think that snowboarders whack into skiers,” Mr. Shealy says. “But it’s completely the other way around,” a phenomenon related to how each group falls. “Snowboarders stop abruptly,” Shealy says, their boards biting into the snow. “Skiers slide,” he says, often into a downed snowboarder.

Yes. We can stop and even turn. . .

Intrawest Owes $524 Million Today

by The Editors on December 23, 2009

IntrawestDecember 23, 2009 is a big day for Whistler-Blackcomb Resort owning Intrawest ULC and its parent Fortress Investment Group LLC. A reported $524 million payment on a $1.4 billion loan is due, according to a story in Businessweek. And they may not be able to make the payment.

Intrawest, which owns venues being used at the 2010 Winter Olympics, may be pushed nearer to default if it fails to make the $524 million payment after getting a 60-day extension on Oct. 23, according to the people, who asked not to identified because the loan terms are private.

But not to worry, Dave Cobb, deputy chief executive officer for the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games says everything is fine. “Our venues are finished, preparations are nearly complete and we look forward to welcoming the world to Vancouver.”

Maybe Intrawest owner Fortress Investment Group LLC should just put tip jars all around during the Olympics and ask visitors to pitch in. That might help.
