On Labor Day 2009 snowboarder Todd Richards, writer Sean Mortimer, and skateboarder Jesse Fritsch, and Sweet Jerome (qualified old guys all) holed up at a secret southern California mini ramp and spent the entire afternoon trying to land frontside blunts. Tony Hawk even threw in a $300 prize. Let’s just say Todd Richards didn’t win.

Okay, at this point, we’re just throwing all the movie premieres in here even though these Billabong events are so jam-packed popular that it’s almost pointless to even try to get in, we’re still going to mention that the World Premiere of Still Filthy is going down at 9 PM on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at the Hard Rock Hotel. That’s tomorrow night.

Skateboarder Nick Mullin barely survived a severe case of staph infection but his is pulling through. Here’s the latest update via The Daily Sesh.
After being given a 1% chance of living and a long hospital stay, Nick made it through. He’s still recovering and has some obstacles to tackle, but hopefully it will help him to know the whole skateboarding community is rooting for him

The news from Neff just keeps getting stranger and stranger. Now, Neff Headwear has teamed up with the MTV Video Music Awards and Greenhouse to make a special limited run of hats for all the celebrity presenters at this year’s VMAs.
The hat features a re-designed Moon Man and a bright green under brim with the slogan “Green is the New Black” to salute the eco-friendly New York City nightclub Green House. The hats will be given to each celebrity presenter at this years award show for them to rock and keep.
Yes, these look really good, and we’re sure all the collectors are going to want to get their hands on these.

Today Vans officially announced that they will be hosting their annual Downtown Showdown at the Paramount Studios’ Back Lot on Saturday, September 26, 2009 with $85,000 in cash and prizes on the line.
The top teams in skateboarding including Girl, Flip, Blind, Creature, Black Label, Foundation, Toy Machine, SK8MAFIA and Zoo York . . . are submitting design ideas for one of four custom obstacles to be built against the Brooklyn brownstone movie set, the Vans Downtown Showdown is always one of the most unique contests of the year.
The whole thing will be live on Vans.com September 26, 2009 from 5 PM to 9:30 PM.

Video Grass will have its Southern California premiere along with Hard to Earn Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 7:30 PM in the hallowed halls of the world famous La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas, California.
Confirmed riders in attendance include: Darrell Mathes, Mikey LeBlanc, Laurent-Nicolas Paquin, Louie Paradise, Aaron Bittner, Jonas Michilot, Nima Jalali, Keegan Calaika, Desiree Melancon, Ben Bilocq, Nic Davis, MFM, Derek Dennison, Chris Bradshaw, Jeremy “Worm” Grendahl, Jonah Owen, and Cory Cronk.

For years we’ve fantasized about getting trapped in a well-stocked Venice, California kitchen with Tara Dakides, Chanel Sladics, Kassia Meador, Claire Bevilacqua, and Wahoo’s Wing Lam, who hasn’t.
Now, The Zeno Supper Club has gone and made it a reality as one episode of their series of ‘webisode” releases coming out on Youtube.com. We weren’t there, but we’re looking forward to seeing them cook up their Smoked Porter Braised Mole Short Ribs real soon.
Which reminds us: we love cooking at home when someone else does the cooking.

Hirofumi Matsumoto, an employee of the Hyatt Regency Hotel on the Mariana Island of Saipan is still missing after he and a friend got caught in a strong current that reportedly pulled them outside the reef where they were surfing last Sunday (September 6, 2009). The friend was able to paddle back in, however Matsumoto did not make it, according to a story in the Saipan Tribune.
On Tuesday Boyet Centeno found Matsumoto’s rental surfboard floating near shore.
Centeno told police he was fishing in the area when he saw the surfboard wash up on the beach. After several minutes, when nobody claimed the surfboard, he took it home. . . Centeno later read in the newspapers about the missing surfer so he informed his boss, Taylor, about the surfboard he found.
While search crews are still working it has now become a “search and recovery” mission, according to the story.

Last year The Crossroads Trade Show seemed like a reaction. It was a response to damage (real and/or perceived) that the Action Sports Retail show had done to the skateboarding business and the Crossroads was seen as a salve, an antidote, maybe even a correction. But in 2009 the Crossroads, held in the back parking lot of Jamie Thomas’ Blackbox Distribution on the eastern edge of Carlsbad, California seems to have grown into its own.
Today there wasn’t as much talk about the trade show wars. Instead most discussions centered around the brands, the products, and how good it was to see old friends. It is the gathering of skateboarding business. And while talk of the economy came up during the day, it was more out of optimism for the future than worry about the past.
Being a bigger show helps. “The event has grown quite a bit,” said founder Jamie Thomas. “It’s almost double of what it was last year. There are over 100 brands and we’re doing two days. I think tomorrow will be even bigger.”
Rolling around the booths, however, it was tough not to compare The Crossroads to what we’ll all see on Thursday when ASR kicks off in a corner of the San Diego Convention Center. It’s is nice to be able to walk in without waiting in line. Or skateboard in front of a booth in peace or do pretty much anything else without anyone telling you to stop, or leave, or ask to see your badge. And that in itself is reason enough to love it.
